1 Game 6D1: Representing and interpreting data Strand: Data Strand Unit: Representing and interpreting data Curriculum Objectives Covered: Collect, organise and represent data using pie charts and trend graphs Read and interpret trend graphs and pie charts Compile and use simple data sets Explore and calculate averages of simple data sets Use data sets to solve problems Name: Temperature Aim: To record the temperature every day over a one week period, and to represent that data by using IT to create a trend graph and a pie chart. Activity Area: IT Suite/Classroom. (Temperature to be recorded outdoors.) Duration: Temperature readings are taken at the same time every day for one week. The activity can then be carried out in one long session (approx. 1 hour) or over a number of shorter sessions. Linkage: Fractions Integration: Geography: Natural Environments; Weather, climate and atmosphere Science: Energy and Forces; Heat IT: Data Handling Resources: 1 thermometer Ideally one computer with Microsoft Word per child, but children can work together in small groups around fewer computers if necessary. 1 printer per child/group. 1 Task Sheet per child/group (photocopiable sheet attached) 1 Sample Trend Graph and Pie Chart sheet per child/group (photocopiable sheet attached) Set Up - One week before activity: 1. Place the thermometer somewhere outdoors. 2. Check the temperature, with the children, every day at the same time for one whole week, and keep a record of the results. Set Up: 1. Allocate each child/group a computer with Microsoft Word and a printer. 2. Photocopy one Task Sheet for each child/group and distribute.
2 Start Playing: 1. Each child/group begins by writing the temperatures from the week into the spaces in the chart at the top of their Task Sheet. 2. Each child/group sits at their computer and follows the instructions on their Task Sheet. 3. After having followed the instructions on their Task Sheets, each child/group will have printed out their Trend Graph, Pie Chart and set of Questions based on the temperature recordings they collected over the week. 4. All of the children s printed graphs, charts and questions should be put on display where all of the children can see each other s work and attempt to answer each other s questions.
3 Name: Task Sheet 1. Record the daily temperatures over one week: (Temperatures from previous Saturday and Sunday may be found on the internet) Saturday Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Temperature in 2. Now that you have your data (information) collected, follow the instructions below to make a Trend Graph using your computer: Open Microsoft Word. Click Insert, Picture, Chart. Chart and Sample Datasheet appear. Note: If the Datasheet disappears at any stage, double-click on the chart and it will reappear. Highlight, right click, and cut sample rows 2 and 3, by clicking on the 2 and the 3 to highlight each row. Delete East and rename as Temperatures in. Rename 1 st Qtr as Saturday, 2 nd Qtr as Sunday, 3 rd Qtr as Monday and 4 th Qtr as Tuesday. Under E type Wednesday, under F type Thursday and under G type Friday. Type the above temperatures for each day of the week into the appropriate cells. Making sure the datasheet is open, click on Chart in the top toolbar and then click Chart Type. Choose Line. You now have a Trend Graph showing the data that you collected over the week. Once again making sure the datasheet is open, click on Chart in the top toolbar and click Chart Options. Here you can fill in your Chart Title and Data Labels. Explore the various tools and format options on your computer to style your Trend Graph to your own taste. 3. Now make a Pie Chart to show the most common temperatures during the week (in temperature brackets of 5 C), by following the instructions below: Open Microsoft Word. Click Insert, Picture, Chart. Chart and Sample Datasheet appear. Note: If the Datasheet disappears at any stage, double-click on the chart and it will reappear. Making sure the datasheet is open, click on Chart in the top toolbar and then click Chart Type. Choose Pie. Highlight, right click, and cut sample rows 2 and 3, by clicking on the 2 and the 3 to highlight each row.
4 Delete East and rename as Temperature Brackets. Rename 1 st Qtr as 0-5, 2 nd Qtr as 6-10 and 3 rd Qtr as Right-click on D and cut the column showing the sample information for the 4 th Qtr. Under each column heading, type in the amount of days that had a temperature within the temperature bracket for that column. Be careful not to type a temperature into this cell but an amount of days with a temperature within the above temperature bracket. E.g. If 2 days were 4 C and 1 day was 5 C during the week, then 3 would go under the column heading 0-5. You now have a Pie Chart representing temperature data that you collected over the week. Once again making sure the datasheet is open, click on Chart in the top toolbar and click Chart Options. Here you can fill in your Chart Title and Data Labels. Explore the various tools and format options on your computer to style your Pie Chart to your own taste. Now think of a list of questions based on your graph and chart and type them out. Here are some ideas to start you off: What day of the week was the hottest/coldest? What was the average temperature over the week? Etc. * Make sure that you know the answers to your own questions, but do not type them out. Whoever looks at your work on display will have to work out the answers for themselves! When your Trend Graph and Pie Chart are correctly labelled and spaced on one A4 page, similar to the samples you have been given, and your questions are also typed out, type your name/s at the bottom of your work and print it for your classroom display.
