1 Future of : Campaign for Action OHIO ACTION COALITON Date: June 21, 2012, 9:50 to 3:00 pm Where: Quest Business Center, 8405 Pulsar Place, Columbus OH MEETING NOTES TOPIC Welcome Introductions Presentation by Pat Farmer Group Work Session 1 Group Work Session II and Lunch DISCUSSION Co-Chairs, Jane Mahowald, OLN and Sean McGlone, OHA, welcomed all to this third meeting of the Ohio Action Coalition. Overview for the day and Principles of Participation were reviewed. Purpose of meeting: focus on nursing education and the goal of increasing the number of BSN nurses in Ohio s nursing workforce. Approximately 138 persons were present representing nursing practice, associate degree nursing programs, baccalaureate nursing programs, Ohio Board of, and nursing and other organizations. (Attendee list a part of these minutes.) Patricia A. Farmer, DNP, FNP-BC, RN, nursing education expert from the Center to Champion in America (CCNA) reviewed the background of the IOM report, CCNA s activities regarding the report, and Action Coalitions. She then presented an overview of four (4) emerging models that have been used and proven to be successful in other states in advancing and transforming education progression. Pat indicated she was aware of some ongoing discussion in Ohio about legislation for mandating that AD graduates achieve a BSN within 10 years of graduation and stated that work to transform education and promote education progression was needed with or without such legislation. She further stated that CCNA and RWJF are not taking a position about such legislation. The four models presented were: 1) RN to BSN Degree Offered by Community College, 2) Common/Shared Curriculum (Regional or Statewide), 3) Accelerated RN to MSN Options, 4) Competency Based Curriculum. (See PowerPoint presentation on OLN website Ohio Action Coalition) Participants conducted brief small group discussions at their table to individually prioritize which of the models they were most interested in or believed was most promising for Ohio to pursue. Priorities indicated by individual participants showed (not all attendees voted) 42 votes for Competency Based Curriculum, 24 votes for RN to BSN offered by Community Colleges, 23 votes for Common Shared Curriculum, and 14 votes for accelerated RN to MSN options. Meeting attendees then participated in more in-depth small group discussions regarding the 4 models and focused their discussions on one or two models of particular interest to individuals at the table. Each table completed a worksheet regarding their discussion of the model(s). In addition, each table was also asked to collectively prioritize the 4 models. The average table ranking of the 4 models was: 1) Competency Based Curriculum (priority average 1.9), 2) Common Curriculum (priority average 2.1), 3) Accelerated RN to MSN Options (priority average 2.5), 4) RN to BSN Offered by Community Colleges (priority average 2.8). These rankings were based on summarizing the table discussions and tabulating results. OAC_Meeting Notes_ June 21,

2 Report from Work Groups and General Discussion Next Steps Adjournment Since there was not time for each table to report results of their discussion at the meeting, the work sheets were collected to be summarized and shared with all participants. (Notes from Individual Table Discussions Summary and Summary of Table Discussions can be found on OLN website OAC information) General comments included the need to continue the work begun at this meeting. Collaboration between practice and education was noted as an essential component of moving forward. Working together to identify common goals, identifying potential resources (both financial and human), identifying key stakeholders who may be able to provide assistance and support, collecting data that will help inform and support the progression of nursing education and getting practicing nurses involved in the process were recurrent themes from table discussions. BSN in ten legislation was also discussed by some attendees. Notes from table discussions to be developed for each table (17 tables) and a summary will also be developed (see OLN website OAC information). This information will be shared with all who are on the list serve for the Ohio Action Coalition, which includes all who participated today. A list of today s participants will be posted with the meeting notes and discussion from today. Multiple attendees expressed willingness to host/sponsor upcoming meetings of the Action Coalition. Thank you to Pat Farmer for her presentations. Thank you to the Planning Committee: Cindy Wilkins, Hope Moon, Kay Wellman, Sean McGlone, Jane Mahowald, Pat Farmer (CCNA) and Jen Cooper (CCNA). Thank you to Ohio Hospital Association and Ohio Council of Associate Degree Education Administrators (OCADNEA) for their financial contributions to support for this event. The meeting concluded at 2:30 PM.
