4 Do your research prior to submitting your press releases - otherwise you are simply wasting your time and losing credibility in the eyes of the journalists that you are attempting to gain respect from. Ben Angel MEDIA MISTAKE #1: Your Story Isn't Newsworthy To secure coverage you must have a newsworthy story. Launching a new product / service is hardly captivating - especially if thousands of others are doing the exact same thing every single day. List the media you would love to get featured in, then identify the 10 top stories they have focused on in recent times. Dissect the key elements that you believe made them 'newsworthy.' Now re-visit your proposed idea - does it carry weight or does it require work? MEDIA MISTAKE #2: Marketing Message Unclear Whether you're an author, speaker, consultant or entrepreneur, you 'must' have a marketing message that captures the hearts, minds and wallets of your prospective customers. Remember the saying, 'if you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything." Ensure that you and your 'business' stands for something' and the media will be drawn to you immediately. If your cash flow is poor and the media keep ignoring you, one of the core reasons for this is that your marketing message isn't compelling enough that they wish to engage you or feature your product / service. MEDIA MISTAKE #3: Credible Competitors When promoting yourself as an expert, 'credibility' reigns supreme. Zero credibility means that you won't get taken seriously. This means that you need to work on the quality of your work, word of mouth and getting featured in places in which key influences will begin to notice you... and fast. If journalists aren't returning your calls or responding to your press releases, it's because it does not portray you as your industries leading figure. This is typically due to key credibility factors being left out of bio's that accompany your releases. A key element many seem to fail to focus on that can get you over the line effortlessly. MEDIA MISTAKE #4: Your Content is Uninspiring Media must do their research when interviewing for a story or conducting a feature. If they don't, it is their head on the chopping block and could lead to a very public demise. They conduct their due-diligence by visiting your website and social media pages. If they are not moved by your current content, i.e. articles, status updates etc. they won't move forward with an interview. Writing articles for your blog isn't only about writing for prospective clients, it is about writing for those that have influence over your larger markets - including the media. MEDIA MISTAKE #5: Weak Personal Brand Your personal brand is one of the key deciding factors when it comes to the media selecting you to be interviewed. If they can see that your blog / social media presence lack strong opinions or a lack of professionalism and personality - they will not contact you. Creating a compelling brand is the first step to getting media, writing a media pitch and release the second because it doesn't matter what the pitch is, if you do not appear credible, it will not fly. MEDIA MISTAKE #6: Another 'ME TOO' Brand It takes less than 10 seconds to conduct a Google search to see that you have thousands of competitors. The challenge therein lies, how do you 'say the same thing, but say it differently,' There are few unique products / services in the marketplace, a great twist on an old concept can bring new life to it which will be followed by new cash flow. Be sure to complete your handy checklist on the previous page prior to sending it to the media to dramatically increase your chances of securing massive media coverage and converting that coverage to paying customers. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE For additional information, contact: (insert your contact details here, the person / company sending the press release) PRESS RELEASE HEADING: i.e. write a powerful headline that is in alignment with the target media you wish to send this to. Write 20 headline ideas before culling it back to your top 5, then 3, then 1. OPENING PARAGRAPH: Write your most powerful opening here in 40 words or less. Create intrigue and interest via storytelling, i.e. Local author airs controversial opinions on natural childbirth. This introductory paragraph should also answer the questions of who, what, when, where and why. Get straight to the point. PRESS RELEASE BODY OF CONTENTS: The paragraphs of your press release should be no more than 3-4 sentences in most cases. One / two solid quotes is a must in your release, perhaps from a company executive, the person who is sending the release or a customer who is acting as a supporting case study. Remember, the release shouldn't be about your business but the stories connected to it, i.e. client transformations, 'back from the brink' stories, expert commentary on a popular topic of the moment. Your release should be written in a journalistic nature that emulates the style of the media outlet you plan to target. Read the media you wish to submit it to and write it with them in mind as inspiration for your style. Those serious about getting onto a particular TV or radio segment, newspaper, magazine or blog, write word for word their top story of the day / month. This will assist you to breakdown the unique formula in which they position a bulk of their content. This will help you in fully understanding what they are needing and expecting from contributing experts, segments and stories. ABOUT YOU (THE EXPERT) OR THE BUSINESS Write a brief biography about you or the business.
