Week Six Lessons We will review the ways you can make animations in Fireworks We will make sure that your previous HTML/CSS exercises are in your shared Drop Box folder. We will go through a demo of how to complete the banner project. Project Overview This project will fulfill the banner project goals. You will create two linked html pages You will place your static banner on the pages You will place the background image in the style sheet You will create CSS buttons You will use CSS transitions to animate the CSS buttons You should have completed the following before starting this project. Create/optimize a banner Slice the banner into a background image that will go in the CSS document and a banner image that will go in the HTML document Export the slices in the appropriate image format Define a Dreamweaver Site You should know how to set up a Dreamweaver site by now. 1. Create a folder named banner_project. 2. Place your two exported slices in it the background image and the banner image. 3. Define a Dreamweaver site with the banner_project folder as the local site folder. 4. Complete the server details. Create the Index Page 1. File > New. 2. Choose Other and then Text. 3. Save the page as index.html. 4. Add the basic html structure to the document. <!doctype html> <html> <head> <meta charset="utf-8"> <title>comfort Care Veterinary Clinic</title> <link href="main.css" </head> <body> </body> </html> 1

5. Between the opening and closing body tags, add five divs to the page. The container div will be the outer parent and the other divs will be nested inside it. <body> <div class="container"> <div class="header"></div> <div class="sidebar"></div> <div class="content"></div> <div class="footer"></div> </div> </body> 6. Add your banner image inside the header div. <div class="header"> <img src="banner_slice.jpg" width="741" height="161" alt="comfort Care Veterinary Clinic"> </div> 7. Add an unordered list of three links inside the sidebar div: Home (index.html), Resume (resume.html) and Contact (an link). <ul> <li><a href="index.html">home</a></li> <li><a href="resume.html">resume</a></li> <li><a </ul> 8. Add some lorem ipsum text between the content div tags. <lipsum.com> 9. Add Copyright 2013 within <p> tags within the footer div. Create the Style Sheet Next you ll create and attach a style sheet to the index page. 1. File > New. 2. Blank Page and under Page Type select CSS. 3. Click Create and save the document as styles.css. 4. Add the link to the style sheet in the head of the index page. You can place it under the title of the page. <title>comfort Care Veterinary Clinic</title> <link href="main.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css"> Adding the Structural Rules Next you will add the rules that create the look of two columns. 1. Create the body rule: zero out the padding and margins that the browser style 2

sheet adds, font-size, font-family, and line-height, a page background-color, and the background image that will tile horizontally across the page. Understanding Font Size Styles: You are going to set the base font size to 100%. You may be puzzled about what that figure 100% means. One of the goals of Web Standards is to make sure that pages are accessible to as many people as possible, including those with disabilities. Since many people have visual problems and almost everyone develops them as they grow older, it is a good idea to make sure that type is large enough for everyone to read. Someone with impaired vision may have gone into the browser preferences and changed the default font size from 16 pixels to 18 pixels or higher. The 100% figure, therefore, means 100% of whatever the user has set in the browser preferences. In later exercises, you will scale other text such as h1 and p from that user setting. By setting the body to 100% of the user s browser font size, all future font sizes will scale from that starting point. For example, if you later set the paragraph font-size to 85%, it will be 85% of the user s font preference, whether 12, 14, 16, 18 or more pixels. CSS offers you a confusing number of units of measurement. In general, you ll want to stick to the best choices for online reading: percentages, ems or pixels. Except for print style sheets, you ll want to avoid points, inches, centimeters and other print-based Chapters of measurement. There are many debates about which unit of measurement is best on Web pages. You may want to read many of the lively discussions about this topic before you make your decision. For accessibility, many designers feel percentages and ems, both of which scale, are the best choices. On the Web, the em has come to mean the height of the font that is in use. body { font-family: "Lucida Sans Unicode", "Lucida Grande", sansserif; font-size: 100%; line-height: 1.4; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; background-color: #D1782B; background-image: url(header_bg.jpg); /*the name of your image*/ background-repeat: repeat-x; } 2. Style the container div that will serve as the suitcase for the page. Set the background color of the layout, use auto left and right to center the page, and 3

set the width to the WIDTH OF YOUR BANNER. Here is an example..container { background: #FFFFFF; width: 741px; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: auto; } Note: A way to remember the order of margins and padding is by thinking of the TROUBLE it will cause if you don t list them properly: TRBL (Top Right Bottom Left) Next you will float the sidebar and content divs side-by-side. The math, including the padding, needs to add up to the width of your banner. 3. Float the sidebar and content divs, giving them a width and padding. Here is an example based on a banner that is 741 pixels wide..sidebar { float: left; width: 200px; padding-right: 15px; padding-left: 15px; }.content { float: left; width: 500px; padding-right: 11px; } 4. Finally, add the footer div. You will CLEAR the floated columns, add a background color (that matches your header or fits into your color scheme), set some padding, and choose a font color. Here is an example:.footer { color: #FFFFFF; background: #4F641B; padding: 15px; clear: both; } Creating CSS Buttons You will turn the list of links into the look of CSS buttons. 1. First you will zero out the margin and padding that the browser style sheet places on lists, turn off the bullets on unordered lists, and set a new margin-top. 4

.sidebar ul { margin: 0px; padding: 0px; margin-top: 20px; list-style-type: none; } 2. Next you will add some margin space under links so that when they turn into buttons the boxes won t be stacked with no breathing room between them..sidebar li { margin-bottom: 5px; } 3. Finally you ll turn the links into buttons with the following rule:.sidebar a { text-decoration: none; color: #FFFFFF; background: #E8892F; display: block; padding: 3px; width: 175px; } The text-decoration property removes the underline. The display property turns links, which are by default inline elements, into block elements. You ll give the buttons a width, some padding for breathing room, and a text color. Animating the Buttons with CSS Transitions You will use the CSS Transitions panel to animate the hover state of the button. After you enter in some properties, Dreamweaver will create the hover state for you. 1. From the Dreamweaver menu, select Window > CSS Transitions. 2. The CSS Transitions dialog box opens. Click the plus button to create a new transition. 5

3. The New Transition dialog box opens. For Target Rule select.sidebar a. For Transitions on select hover. Use the same transition for all properties (unless you want to configure different ones for each property). Duration 1000 ms equals one second. Change to MS in the drop down next to the duration field! Select a Timing Function. (See the glossary below.) Click the plus button to add properties. Add their end values. 4. Click Save Transition and Dreamweaver writes the transition timings and functions to the.sidebar a rule. It writes a new hover rule with the end values you selected. 6

If you look at your style sheet, you ll see what Dreamweaver added..sidebar a { background: #E8892F; display: block; padding: 3px; width: 175px; text-decoration: none; color: #FFFFFF; -webkit-transition: all 1000ms ease-in 0s; -moz-transition: all 1000ms ease-in 0s; -ms-transition: all 1000ms ease-in 0s; -o-transition: all 1000ms ease-in 0s; transition: all 1000ms ease-in 0s; }.sidebar a:hover { background-color: #4F641B; font-size: 120%; letter-spacing: 0.5em; } A Glossary of Terms Before you leave this tutorial, you can read about the details of some of the terms in the CSS Transitions screen of the CSS Styles panel. Duration: over what span of time do you want the transition to take place. The drop down menu includes ms for milliseconds and s for seconds. Delay: when do you want the animation to start? 0 would start the transition immediately. You can also specify a delay before starting, again in milliseconds or seconds. Timing Function: The timing function takes four arguments: (n, n, n, n). Dreamweaver gives you a number of transition options. Cubic-bezier: lets you customize the four numbers of the function. Dreamweaver s Transitions field for cubic-bezier gives you the following value to edit: cubic-bezier(x1,y1,x2,y2). o Ease: starts slowly, becomes faster, and then ends slowly o Ease-in: starts slowly o Ease-in ease-out: starts and ends slowly o Ease-out: ends slowly o Linear: has the same speed from start to finish Before closing out of this exercise, do a SAVE AS on the index page and save it as resume.html. Next time you will create your resume page. 7
