Overview Of Wimax Technology WiMAX: Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, standardized by IEEE and WiMAX-Forum (more than 230 members, including AOL, Deutsche Telekom, Intel, Microsoft, Nokia). Wimax is a telecommunication technology aimed at providing wireless data over long distances in a variety of ways, from point-to-point links to full mobile cellular type access. WiMAX is capable of providing high capacity, high speed and high quality connections over a large coverage area. Brand licensed by the WiMax Forum.
IEEE 802.X Standards Figure 1: IEEE 802.X Standards
IEEE History Figure 2: IEEE History
IEEE History (cont ) IEEE group was formed in The IEEE Standard First introduced in 2001 as IEEE , the standard dealt initially with fixed equipment and line of sight operations only. The IEEE c-2002 Standard Provided system profiles between 10 and 66 GHz The IEEE a-2003 Standard Allowed the use of licensed and license-free frequencies from 2GHz to 11GHz. It is improved interoperability, QoS, and data performance
IEEE History (cont ) The IEEE d-2004 Standard IEEE combines all of the improved functionality of the IEEE amendments. (1) The standard supports communications in the 2 66 GHz frequency range, with GHz for LOS and 2 11 GHz for NLOS. Each frequency range employs different modulation techniques to accommodate LOS and NLOS communications requirements. (2)IEEE can operate in P2P and PMP topologies.
IEEE History (cont ) The IEEE e-2005 Standard IEEE e-2005 provides mobility support for SSs and implements enhanced signaling techniques that enable new service offerings such as Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), presence, and multimedia broadcast. There are additional revisions to the standard in committee today. When a new revision is released, the standard is appended with a new suffix.
WiMAX Architecture Figure 3: WiMAX architecture
WiMAX architecture (Cont ) WiMAX is an access network technology. WiMAX is multiple networks connected to provide services to customers. The Network Service Provider network (NSP) provides all the services and features offered by the carrier. This network is not defined by WiMAX. The Network Access Provider network (NAP) is the interface between the customer equipment and the services and features offered by the carrier. The NAP provides network access and mobility and IP connectivity. The Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) provides customer interface.
WiMAX architecture (Cont ) The overall WiMAX network comprises a number of different entities that make up the different major areas described above. These include the following entities : 1- Subscriber Station, SS / Mobile Station, MS : The Subscriber station, SS may often be referred to as the Customer Premises Equipment, CPE. These take a variety of forms and these may be termed "indoor CPE" or "outdoor CPE". 2- Base Station, BS: The base-station forms an essential element of the WiMAX network. It is responsible for providing the air interface to the subscriber and mobile stations. And it consists of antennas, transceivers, and other electromagnetic wave transmitting equipment.
WiMAX architecture (Cont ) 3- Acess Service Network (ASN) : It is owned by NAP, formed with one or several base stations and ASN gateways (ASN-GW) which creates radio access network. It provides all the access services with full mobility and efficient scalability. Its ASN-GW controls the access in the network and coordinates between data and networking elements.asn GW performs traffic management function within the ASN. 4- Connectivity Service Network (CSN):Provides IP connectivity to the Internet or other public or corporate networks. It also applies per user policy management, address management, location management between ASN, ensures QoS, roaming and security.

IEEE Wimax Model Figure 5: Wimax Model 15
IEEE Physical Layer The role of the PHY-layer is to encode the binary digits that represent MAC frames into signals and to transmit and receive these signals across the communication media. The WiMAXPHY-layer is based on OFDM; which is used to enable high-speed data, video, and multimedia communications and is used by a variety of commercial broadband systems
WIMAX Physical Layer Functional stages
IEEE Physical Layer The physical layer consists of two sub layers: (1) Transmission convergence layer. (2) Physical Medium Dependent (PMD) sub layer. Figure 6: Wimax Model
IEEE Wimax Model The IEEE defines the air interface specifications, namely the Physical (PHY) layer and the Medium Access Control (MAC) layer, for both fixed (IEEE , 2004) and mobile (IEEE a, 2005) terminals. The MAC layer provides the interface with the higher layers through the Service Specific Convergence Sublayer (CS). Below the Service Specific Convergence Sublayer is the Common Part Sublayer (CPS), which is responsible for the core MAC functions. Finally, under the Common Part Sublayer, there is the Security Sublayer.
IEEE MAC Layer The primary task of the WiMAX MAC-layer is to provide an interface between the higher transport layers and the PHY-layer. The MAC-layer takes packets from the upper layer- these packets are called MAC service data units (SDUs) - and organizes them into MAC protocol data units (PDUs) for transmission over the air. For received transmissions, the MAC-layer does the reverse. The IEEE and IEEE e-2005 MAC design includes three sublayers which interact with each other through the service access points (SAPs).
Figure 7: Wimax Model
Convergence Sub layer The CS is the first sub layer from the MAC layer. And it performs the following functions: Figure 8: Convergence Sublayer (1) Accepting higher layer MAC Service Data Units (SDU) coming through the CS Service Access Point (SAP). (2) Performing classification of higher layer SDUs. (3) Processing (if required) the higher layer SDUs based on the classification. (4) Delivering CS SDUs to the appropriate MAC SAP. (5) Receiving CS PDUs from the peer entity.
MAC common part Sub layer The CPS is the second sublayer from the MAC layer. (1) It receives packets arriving from the CS. (2) It is responsible for the most important MAC functions, such as system access, construction and transmission of MAC PDUs, scheduling services management, bandwidth allocation. Figure 9 : Mac common part sublayer
Security Sublayer The Security Sublayer is the last sublayer from the MAC layer, providing authentication and security mechanisms. Figure 10 : security sublayer
Objective (1) Design a WiMAX system in MATLAB Simulink. (2) Simulate the system. (3) Analyze system performance. Figure 11 : Wimax system component.
Simulation Tool The WiMAX simulator will be used in this project MATLAB. MATLAB is a high-level language and interactive environment for numerical computation, visualization, and programming. Using MATLAB, you can analyze data, develop algorithms, and create models and applications.
