Ready, steady, fundraise! It s time to get your whole family involved in fundraising for Cancer Research UK! Welcome to the Race for Life team! We can t thank you and your family enough for joining the biggest fight against cancer this summer. Today, twice as many people survive cancer as they did forty years ago. That s twice as many mums and dads who ll get to see their kids grow up. Twice as many children with the chance of a healthy future and that s all down to people like you people who take part in Race for Life. With your family s support, our scientists can continue their research to understand cancer better, and find new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat the disease so even more people will beat cancer and go on to live much longer in the future. That s why your family s fundraising efforts are so important, as we need you to help us raise as much money as you can to support our life-saving work. To help get you and your children started, the Race for Life team have created this simple guide packed full of ideas and advice to help boost your fundraising efforts. Good luck and have fun!

Why we need you! Many of you will have already taken the first step in your Race for Life journey by entering you and your children into your local Race for Life, but it s what you do now that s almost as important as the experience of the Race itself. There are loads of ways you and your children can double what you raise in sponsorship by organising a variety of family fundraising activities with your child s school, community group, friends and family. Working together to raise money is great fun. You ll share so many special moments and all of your amazing efforts will go on to help to improve the lives of many more boys, girls, mums and dads in the future. Here are just some of the fantastic things we have already achieved, thanks to people like you. Cancer Research UK has helped cancer survival rates in the UK double in the Wow! last 40 years. Wow! Almost three quarters of children with cancer are now cured of their disease. Our research has helped to achieve it. Whether you raise lots of pounds or loads of Wow! pennies, it will all help to make a difference. Wow! Our work has helped save millions of lives across the world (including many people here in the UK). The money you raise for Race for Life will go towards the work of more than 4,000 scientists, doctors and nurses throughout the UK and help make sure millions more people across the world survive their cancer. So don t delay, get your whole family to join the fight against cancer this summer and get fundraising today! Thank you for taking part, we wish you the best of luck with your fundraising - we know you ll make us proud.

Top tips for fundraising success Your children can really help to make a difference to our life-saving work. Get their fundraising off to a flying start by following our top fundraising tips. Involve everyone! Get your children s school, friends and clubs involved in their fundraising activities from school bake sales to car washes. For more schools ideas please visit schools.raceforlife.org. Keep it simple. Give your children ideas and guidance on their fundraising activities, but keep them simple. Make sure their goals are realistic so they remain engaged and clearly communicate their ideas and activities to everyone involved. Have fun! Make sure your kids enjoy their fundraising projects. If you re all having a good time, people are more likely to support your efforts. Aim high. Check your child is realistic about their fundraising targets to avoid disappointment and adjust if required. Keep it safe and legal. No matter what types of fundraising projects you re all planning, make sure everyone including your kids are keeping their activities safe and legal. Do your sums. Aim for your child to raise at least three times as much as you spend. Set a budget, keep expenses to a minimum and try to get services donated. Handling money. Ensure an adult is responsible for collecting, storing and returning all money to Cancer Research UK. Timing is everything. Make sure your child thinks carefully about the best times to hold their fundraising events, check they don t clash with other events in your area and allow plenty of time to prepare. Spread the word. Encourage all of your family and friends to spread the word to raise awareness of your children s activities. Maximise your reach. If your family entered Race for Life as a team you ll already have a team online fundraising page. If you haven t, go online and create an online fundraising page to help everyone collect sponsorship for your Race for Life at raceforlife.org/raise-money-online. Say thank you! Encourage your children to thank people who have sponsored or helped them raise money. Congratulate them for their efforts and keep sharing news and stories about our life-saving work.

Promote your fundraising Letting people know about your family s entry to Race for Life and extra fundraising efforts is the first step to fundraising success. Here are a few ideas to get the best out of your activities to raise as much awareness and money as possible: Word of mouth Word of mouth is one of the most effective kinds of promotion, so encourage your family to tell everyone they know in your neighbourhood what you re all doing and why. Publicity materials Visit our Fundraising tools page at raceforlife.org/fundraise for lots of free materials to help you promote all your activities, including a poster template. Social networks One of the best ways to promote your activities is through the internet and social media. Please ensure your children are old enough to access these sites. Local media Contacting your local media is a great way to spread the word and attract more support. Get in touch with newspapers or try and get radio or television stations interested. We ve got lots of tools to make getting noticed even easier just visit supportus.cancerresearchuk.org/fundraising. Schools Tell your child s school to order a Race for Life schools resource pack. This is packed full of fundraising ideas, tips and advice to encourage school entry to Race for Life and to get teachers and pupils involved in extra fundraising ideas. Visit schools.raceforlife.org to place an order. s Encourage all your family to send s to their friends and children s teachers asking for support. Remember to let them know why their support is so important and how they can sponsor you. Don t forget to include the link to your team or individual online fundraising page if you have one.

Keep it safe and legal We want you all to have fun whilst fundraising for us, but it is important that any fundraising activity is legal and safe especially if it involves children. Here are some simple guidelines to help you plan and run safe, legal and successful fundraising activities. Please visit cancerresearch.org.uk/fundraising for more information. Parental permission. Make sure your children and their friends understand that they are raising money for Cancer Research UK and that they need their parents permission before they start any fundraising. Supervision is needed. Children under 16 need to be properly supervised at all times during their fundraising activities. If adults are put in charge of supervising children, you need to make sure the appropriate checks have been carrried out by, for example, the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB). Risk assessments and first aid. Undertake a risk asessment before your child s activities to help you find out if there s anything you need to do to prevent accidents happening. Take the correct precautions to reduce the risk of harm. Take advice from a professional medical company like St John s Ambulance or Red Cross when deciding what first aid support you may require. Approval from the community. If your activities involve the community make sure you get approval from your child s school, youth group, local authority etc before you agree to any ideas. Licences and public liability insurance may need to be considered. Money handling and keeping safe. Adults should always be responsible for collecting money and accepting donations during fundraising events. Ensure it is collected in a secured, sealed container and paid to Cancer Research UK as soon as possible. Food hygiene. Make sure children wash their hands before any food handling. Follow the simple guidelines on preparing, handling and cooking food available from food.gov.uk. Say NO to strangers. Make sure all children involved in fundraising activities only approach people they know from their community. Street collections require a licence from your local council and there are age restrictions. Publicity. Make sure you get the correct parental permissions for using any child s picture in the promotion and coverage of their fundraising activities. Online fundraising. Only those over 16 are able to create and manage their own online Race for Life fundraising page. Younger children should be encouraged to promote a group or parent s fundraising page.

Fundraising ideas for your kids Fundraising on their own Take a challenge. Friends and family could sponsor your child 5 to give up sweets or do all the washing up at home for a week. Collect coins. Find a jar and pass this on to your chilld. They could ask you, their dad, guardian, brothers, sisters and friends parents to fill it with as much loose change as they can. Every penny they raise makes a difference! Fancy dress. You could sponsor your child 10 to wear fancy dress for a whole day. Silence. Sponsor your child to stay silent for an an hour, two hours or could they challenge themselves and stretch to a whole day? Help with the chores. Request friends and family to offer cash donations in return for help with small chores, such as gardening, recycling or clearing out the shed. Give up favourite food. Sponsor your child to give up their favourite food for a day or week. Spelling and maths test. Challenge your child to do a sponsored test, perhaps give 50p for every correct spelling or times table. Tea party. Help your child bake cakes and treats to put on a tea party for friends and family members, ask each guest to donate 5. Dine with me. Challenge your child to make a three course meal for the family and ask for 10 for each of them to attend. Eat one colour food challenge. Sponsor your child to eat only one colour of food for the day - perhaps make it green! No TV or internet. Challenge your child to live without TV or the internet for a day, week or even one full month! Why not sponsor them 2 a day! Readathon. Get your child reading by sponorsing them per hour or per book. Learn a new skill. Encourage your child to build on their skills, why not learn how to juggle or make crafts to then sell. Walk to school and work. Get your kids to encourage the family to walk to work and donate the savings to Cancer Research UK.

Fundraising with their friends PJ party. Invite your child s friends to come around for a movie and popcorn PJ party night. Ask parents to donate 5 each. Bake sale. Organise a baking session and encourage them to sell their treats onto friends and family to raise money to beat cancer. Sleepover. All children love sleepovers. Ask parents to donate 10 and organise a fun filled sleepover with your child. Car wash. Challenge your child and their friends to wash and clean their parents cars in return for a 20 donation. Group silence. Sponsor your child and their friends to an afternoon silence. Recycle old toys & clothing for charity. Encourage your children to tidy their rooms and seek out toys you know they could donate to a Cancer Research UK shop. Dress-up day. Your child could organise a dress up day where they could all dress in pink or a fun theme, like movie stars. Everyone to pay 2 to join in. Teddy bears picnic. Host a family and friends teddy bear picnic in the park. Walk to school. Sponsor the whole family to leave the car at home and walk to school and work. Face painting or pamper party. All children love face painting and a bit of pampering - so why not do some face painting after school. Kids have got talent. Has your child got talent? Host a talent show for the whole community and ask for donations to enter. Wear your clothes backwards. Sponsor a group of children to wear their dresses, shirts or trousers backwards for the day! It will be heaps of fun and will definitely get your fundraising efforts noticed. Themed event fundraising. Encourage your child and their friends to organise a dance off or sports game against friends, family or parents. Gardening. Sponsor your child to grow vegatables or keep on top of some gardening chores. Quiz. Challenge your child and their friends to a sponsored parents quiz. Sponsor your child 1 and you could buy 11 cryotubes, designed to help scientists store precious samples at very chilly temperatures. Sponsor your child 5 and you could buy 150 glass slides that scientists can use to study cells and tumour samples under a microscope. Sponsor your child 10 and you could buy 80 Petri dishes scientists use to grow cells in the lab, helping their groundbreaking work to understand cancer.

Fundraising at their school Disco. Suggest your child s school hold a lunchtime or after school disco where children donate to enter on the door. School bake sale. Get your child baking their favourite cakes and biscuits to sell to their teachers and friends at school at lunchtime or after school. Non uniform. Ask your child s school to organise a non-uniform day. Ask children to donate 1 to wear their own clothes for the day. Challenge your class. Get your child s whole class involved in a challenge. How about a sponsored silence, sponsored trampoline bounce, or go without session. Dress up day. Encourage teachers to tie a themed day into their lesson plans. Ask children to donate money in dress up as their favourite characters, objects or countries in history, science or geography. Encourage your child s school to order our Race for Life schools resource pack today, visit schools.raceforlife.org. If a class of 40 children all donated 1 to a non-uniform day this would raise 40. This money could enable us to buy a key textbook to keep our Cancer Information Nurses knowledge up-to-date on cancer medicine. If a school of 250 children all donated 2 to an after school disco it would raise 500. This money could pay for a training afternoon for our whole team of Cancer Information Nurses. How to return the money everyone has raised As soon as we ve received your family s money we can start putting it to good use, funding research and saving lives. Once you ve collected all of it in, please return it via one of the three ways below: By post with a cheque made payable to Cancer Research UK to Race for Life, PO Box 442, Northampton, NN3 6UU.
