22 Installation INSTALLATION BASICS Paving Stones SCAN NOW FOR HOW TO VIDEOS ON PAVING STONES INSTALLATION STEP 1: Site Preparation and Excavation. Determine finished elevation using stakes and string line. Excavate soil to ideal project depth. STEP 2: Base Preparation. Spread 4" of paver base. Use a plate compactor to create a rigid base. Add 1" of pave sand on top. STEP 3: Screeding the Sand. Pull the pile of sand towards you creating a level sand bed before laying the pavers. STEP 4: Laying and Compacting the Stones Lay first paver in the corner of the walkway. Use edge restraint to keep pavers from moving. Sweep paver sand across the walkway filling joints. Retaining Walls SCAN NOW FOR HOW TO VIDEOS ON WALLS INSTALLATION STEP 1: Site preparation and excavation. Stake out the area where the wall will be installed. Dig a trench 12" wide and 4" deep. STEP 2: Base Preparation. Tamp soil in trench to create a ridged surface. Add 1" of leveling sand to the bottom of the trench. STEP 3: Leveling and Laying Stones. Lay side by side and check for level. Stack additional courses with the bond staggered on the course below. STEP 4: Use a hammer and a mason s chisel to score the stone on all sides except the face. Build a frame for your patio or walk with aluminum or plastic edging (redwood or treated lumber can also be used). Patio should slightly fall away from home. STEP 2: Sand Place roughly 1 in. of paver sand over area. (A 2"x4" notched board approx. 1.5 in. from each end can be used to screed or level paver sand).
