Engaging Your Students in Science and Engineering Practices Using Inquiry 2017 Summer Professional Development Institutes Museum Institute for Teaching Science

MITS Mission to promote and improve the teaching of inquiry-based science and STEM initiatives through collaboration of formal education institutions (K-12 schools, colleges and universities) and informal education institutions (museums, aquariums, nature centers and other non-profits organizations)

MITS firmly believes: Students learn about science, mathematics and technology first and foremost through interactions with teachers. Changing the nature of those interactions is The surest way to improve education in these subjects in the United States. (Rising Above the Gathering Storm)

MITS Professional Development Institutes... engage teachers in an exciting professional development experience that leads to understanding and being comfortable using inquiry-based, minds-on, hands-on pedagogy to teach STEM activities and incorporate science and engineering practices in the classroom.

Summer Institutes... are graduate level courses facilitated at museums, nature centers, aquariums, zoos and cultural institutions by site educators. Each regional institute has 3-5 partner sites. Every site provided new knowledge, great activities and wonderful facilitators.

Learn Inquiry-Based Methods These two weeks have flown by and what I have learned will change my teaching style in science, math, and technology for the rest of my life.

Learn Interdisciplinary Content I really liked how (the instructor) made a direct connection between the activities she had us do and literacy. Prior to some of the activities she gave us handouts I will be able to use these with my lessons and also share with my colleagues.

Share Ideas The opportunity to share ideas with other teachers and professionals is something we can never get enough of. I enjoyed being introduced to activities and ideas I hadn t thought of before.

Explore Educational Resources In Your Community From the very first presentation through the last activities, I was astonished by the level of preparation and passion each presenter had. Each day I felt more and more confident with the idea of inquiry-based investigations and could visualize using them in my classroom to a fuller extent.

Take Home a Diversity of Resources For Your Classroom When you take a course and you come away with an activity or an idea you can use in your classroom it is always satisfying. These past few days have been filled with activities and ideas that can be easily modified for my curriculum.

Earn PDPs and Graduate Credit Professional development that does not feel like professional development is a great thing. The class was exceptionally taught. This is by far the best course I've ever taken. I learned so much and I feel so much more confident teaching science to my students. Excellent!

MITS Professional Development Institutes provide you the opportunity to... Choose from one week or hybrid graduate-level professional development institutes Participate in classroom and field activities Meet with research scientists and engineers Visit research labs, product development facilities and production lines of STEM industries and local research institutions Earn PDPs only OR 3 or 4 Graduate Credits and PDPs Experience activities aligned with MA State Standards and the Next Generation Science Standards Connect with partners that provide year-round support for classroom implementation
