2 What better time to start your career than while in high school! There are several ways in which you can get a jump start on your career right now! Complete a Career Pathway If you complete a career program at your high school you could earn college credits at local colleges such as Broward College, Johnson & Wales University, local Technical Centers and more. Not only are you saving time and money, but you could be eligible for the Gold Seal Scholarship! Enroll in Dual Enrollment Dual Enrollment allows you to take college level courses while in high school. These courses count for high school credits as well as college credits. The college credits you earn can be transferred to a variety of colleges and universities, plus the courses and books are free! Enroll in Technical Dual Enrollment Technical Dual Enrollment allows you to take college level career courses at a local technical center or college while still attending your high school. The college level credits you earn will appear on your transcript. Enroll in Share Time If you re interested in a specific career such as Automotive, Cosmetology, Graphic Design, Massage Therapy, and more you enroll at a local technical center while taking academic courses at your high school. You ll be ready for the workforce when you graduate! Explore higher education options Take advantage of college representatives when they visit your school. Ask them questions about programs they offer, cost of tuition, scholarships, financial aid, admissions requirements, and more. And when it s time for you to graduate you will have enough information to decide which higher education option is right for you! 3 College bound or career ready, Career Pathways is the roadmap to your future. Deciding on a career is a very important decision. You career choice will decide the type of college you attend, how much money you will make, how much time you will spend at work, and more. So start thinking about the type of career that s best for you by following these tips: 1. Get to know yourself What are you interests? What are you likes and dislikes? Take a personality assessment to learn the type of work environment that best fits you What do you value most? Helping people, making lots of money, working alone, being creative, working inside versus outside, and more. 2. Get informed Research the types of careers that are in high demand Explore the various types of career options that are available Learn about post secondary education options by attending college and career fairs, meeting with your guidance counselor or BRACE advisor, researching institutions online 3. Create a plan Explore the 16 career clusters listed in this brochure and determine which cluster you find most interesting Determine how you can start taking courses related to your cluster now; either at your high school, local technical centers, or local colleges Choose at least three colleges you would like to attend and find out about their admission requirements, cost of tuition, majors offered, and scholarship and financial aid options, housing options, and more.

4 Career Cluster Career Description Job Titles & Degrees This career cluster prepares learners for careers in the planning, implementation, production, management, processing, and/or marketing of agriculture commodities and services, including food, fiber, wood products, natural resources, horticulture, and other plants and animals. People with careers in design and pre-construction create our future! They turn a concept into a set of plans. Their plans guide other construction professionals as they continue the building process. This career cluster is for people who enjoy designing, producing, exhibiting, performing, writing, and publishing multimedia content including visual and performing arts and design, journalism, and entertainment services. Business Management and Administration careers encompass planning, organizing, directing and evaluating business functions essential to efficient and productive business operations. Business Management and Administration career opportunities are available in every sector of the economy. This career cluster prepares learners for careers in planning, managing and providing education and training services, as well as related learning support services. This career cluster prepares learners for careers in financial and investment planning, banking, insurance, and business financial management. Careers in this cluster encompass executing governmental functions to include Governance; National Security; Foreign Service; Planning; Revenue and Taxation; Regulation; and Management and Administration at the local, state, and federal levels. The Health Science Career Cluster orients students to careers that promote health, wellness, and diagnosis, as well as treat injuries and diseases. Some of the careers involve working directly with people, while others involve research into diseases or collecting and formatting data and information. Hospitality & Tourism encompasses the management, marketing and operations of restaurants and other food services, lodging, attractions, recreation events and travel related services. 5 Career Cluster Career Description Job Titles & Degrees This career cluster prepares individuals for employment in careers related to families and human needs. Learners who choose this career cluster generally enjoy helping people and providing them with assistance. Information Technology careers involve the design, development, support and management of hardware, software, multimedia and systems integration services. IT careers are available in every sector of the economy from Financial Services, to Medical Services, from Business to Engineering and Environmental Services. This career cluster helps prepare students for careers in planning, managing, and providing legal, public safety, protective services and homeland security, including professional and technical support services. The Manufacturing Career Cluster prepares learners for careers in planning, managing and performing the processing of materials into intermediate or final products, and related professional and technical support activities such as production planning and control, maintenance and manufacturing/process engineering. The Marketing Career Cluster prepares learners for careers in planning, managing, and performing marketing activities to reach organizational objectives. Learners who are interested in this career path will be involved in planning, managing, and providing scientific research and professional and technical services (e.g., physical science, social science, engineering) including laboratory and testing services, and research and development services. This career cluster exposes students to careers and businesses involved in the planning, management, and movement of people, materials, and products by road, air, rail and water. It also includes related professional and technical support services in transportation or transportation-related occupations. 6 Which college is right for you? Most careers require more than a high school diploma and employers want employees who have jobrelated skills. The key to getting started is obtaining the right kind of training or education after high school. There are various options available to receive such training and education: Career-Technical Centers Broward County has three public career-technical centers (Atlantic, Sheridan and McFatter) that offer certificate programs that prepare students for a wide range of professions, such as: emergency medical technicians, interior designers, court reporters, electricians, dental assistants, architectural draftsmen, and web designers. Career-technical centers are a low-cost option and can be the quickest way to get trained and certified for certain jobs. Community colleges offer 2-year degrees that prepare students to transfer to a university or to enter jobs requiring special skills. You can earn Associate in Arts (AA), Associate in Science (AS), and Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degrees, as well as certificates in a wide variety of careers. The cost to complete an entire program is a fraction of the cost at private career colleges and universities. Plus, Florida community colleges have an open-door policy, which guarantees admission to a college credit program if you have earned a standard high school diploma or GED. State universities offer Bachelor s degrees, as well as Master s and Doctoral degrees. Because space is limited at state universities, students must compete to be admitted. Applicants are generally required to submit ACT or SAT test scores, and are admitted based on a combination of test scores and GPA. Admission requirements are different at each institution, so research requirements of each institution. It is best to contact each institution you are interested in attending for specific admissions requirements. Private Colleges & Universities In addition to public institutions, Florida has more than 200 private colleges and universities.
