3 Challenge badge A team of 14 from West Yorkshire South Senior Section are going to walk parts of the Great Wall of China in the summer of We all have a variety of reasons for going on the trip. The trip is going to provide lots of cultural experiences and challenges. We have created this challenge badge to help with our fundraising efforts. We hope you enjoy the challenge! We have set the challenge out to have different themes with activities for Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Senior Section and Leaders. All the activities can be adapted to suit any section. The themes are: Food Culture Trade Celebrations The different coloured trefoil next to each activity indicates which section it is suitable for. The Senior Section coloured trefoil indicates the activity is suitable for Senior Section and leaders. To earn a badge you must complete the compulsory activity and then one challenge from each section plus a further two of your choice. West Yorkshire South Senior Section China Challenge Badge Page 1
4 The Great Wall challenge This is the compulsory challenge for everyone to complete and is suitable for everyone! As well as being fun we would also like it to be a fundraising activity. Activity Make a wall as long as you possibly can. Use your imagination for your materials, you could use lego or marshmallows and cocktail sticks or even try making a dry stone wall! Get sponsored for the length of your wall this could be by length or how many marshmallows you use. It is entirely up to you. We would like the money to go to the Centenary Fund to help give girls amazing opportunities and memories that will last a lifetime as we will be creating memories that last forever on our trip. 5 Food Confucius, an influential Chinese philosopher, once said that Eating is the utmost important thing in life. Chinese cooking requires real time, effort and skill. As a result of this, China is often considered by many travellers to offer the best cuisine. There are four main contemporary styles of Chinese cooking: Beijing Style: As a result of the eating habits of the royals, Beijing cuisine primarily consists of meat. This is eaten alongside its staples of noodles, buns or dumplings (Dim Sum), due to Beijing s northerly location. The popular Peking Roast Duck with savoury pancakes originates from Beijing. Cantonese Style:A famous Cantonese saying is, The only four legged thing that the Cantonese people won t eat are tables. As well as the staples of pork, beef and chicken, Cantonese cuisine can also consist of snake, jellyfish, chicken feet and insects to name a few. Live seafood is a Cantonese speciality and it is common to find a live seafood tank in Cantonese restaurants. Shanghai Style:As a relatively new city in China, a unique cooking style is currently being developed in Shanghai. Its food is characterised by heavy and highly flavoured sauces. The secret ingredientsthat make up Shanghai sauces are soy sauce mixed with sugar. Szechuan Style:The majority of China s spiciest recipes originate here, where food is made with chillies and Szechuan peppers. However, they also have some milder dishes, a favourite being Tea Smoked Duck where duck meat is smoked over some tea leaves. No China Challenge Badge would be complete without sampling some of China s diverse tastes so you have our permission to stuff your faces (using chopsticks of course.) Food tasting using chopsticks Try a range of Chinese foods. Prepare a Chinese dish to eat and try other dishes. Prepare two Chinese dishes and eat. Prepare and try at least three Chinese dishes. 7 Culture There are 56 officially recognized ethnic groups in China. In terms of numbers however, Han Chinese is by far the largest group. Throughout history, many groups have merged into neighbouring ethnicities or disappeared altogether. At the same time, many within the Han identity have maintained distinct linguistic and regional cultural traditions. The term Zhonghua Minzu has been used to describe the notion of Chinese nationalism in general. Much of the traditional identity within the community has to do with distinguishing the family name. 8 Trade It is difficult to date precisely when long distance trade emerged in the history of Chinese trade, however there are records of trade in silk and jade with countries such as Egypt as early as 200 BC. In the 13th Century the Chinese filled the Indian Ocean with fleets of ocean going merchant junks, 100 feet long and 25 feet wide, carrying 120 tons of cargo and 60 crew. Those ships visited Indonesia, Ceylon, and the west coast of India. They had developed dry docks and gunpowder bombs 300 years before those were seen in the West. Nowadays, China is sometimes referred to as the Workshop of the World, about 80% of China s exports are manufactured goods, such as textiles and electronic equipment. Some examples are toys, DVD players, mobile phones, shoes and clothes. In 2006, China overtook Japan as the second largest producer of cars and trucks after the United States. Out of the world's five busiest ports in the world, three are in China Trading game Make two jade figures out of green playdough. Swap them with your friends. 10 Celebrations The activities in this section focus on the Chinese New Year, which is China s longest and most important celebration lasting for about 23 days. Each year is named after the twelve animals that accepted Bhudda s invitation to meet him on New Year s Day. Every person who was born in that animals year would share their characteristics those who were born in the year of the snake would have great wisdom, those who were born in the year of the monkey would be lively and quick witted and so on. In China, red symbolises fire which is believed to drive away bad luck; at New Year celebrations people wear red clothes, decorate their homes with poems on red paper, and give children lucky money in red envelopes. They set of fireworks, echoing back to older times when people lit bamboo sticks to scare away evil spirits. On the fifteenth day of the New Year celebrations people set of lanterns, some plain and some decorated with pictures of nature, zodiac signs or depictions of legend and history. The dragon dance is performed, where a giant dragon is made out of silk, paper and bamboo sticks that people dance with around the streets. 14 Fortune cookie recipe Ingredients Serves: 6 1 egg white 1/8 teaspoon vanilla extract 4 tablespoons plain flour 1 pinch salt 4 tablespoons caster sugar Method Preheat oven to 200 C / Gas mark 6. Write fortunes on strips of paper about 10cm (4 in) long and 1cm (1/2 in) wide. Generously grease 2 baking trays. Mix the egg white and vanilla until foamy but not stiff. Sift the flour, salt and sugar and blend into the egg white mixture. Place teaspoonfuls of the batter at least 10cm (4 in) apart on one of the prepared baking trays. Tilt the sheet to move the batter into round shapes about 8cm (3 in) in diameter. Be careful to make batter as round and even as possible. Do not make too many, because the cookies have to be really hot to form them and once they cool it is too late. Start with 2 or 3 to a tray to see how many you can do. Bake for 5 minutes or until cookie has turned a golden colour around the outer edge of the circle. The centre will remain pale. While one tray is baking, prepare the other. Remove from oven and quickly move cookie with a wide spatula and place upside down on a wooden board. Quickly place the fortune on the cookie, close to the middle and fold the cookie in half. Place the folded edge across the rim of a measuring cup and pull the pointed edges down, one on the inside of the cup and one on the outside. Place folded cookies into the cups of a muffin tin or egg carton to hold their shape until firm. West Yorkshire South Senior Section China Challenge Badge Page 12

17 Wishing trees There is a very famous, ancient banyan tree in Lam Tsuen in Hong Kong to which people travel at Chinese New Year and during other festivals to leave their own special wishes. First they write their wishes on colourful red wishing paper, then they tie them to oranges, and throw them up into the tree. If the wishes stick, it is thought that they will come true! The Wishing Tree gave us an idea for a Chinese New Year craft. Make your own "wishing tree" for Chinese New Year by printing out our Chinese designs scrapbook paper or encourage the children to design their own, and write out your own wishes for the New Year. Tie to oranges or apples with colourful ribbons, then get throwing! Sadly the original wishing tree in Hong Kong became so laden down with wishes in 2005 that one of its branches broke off and injured the people standing below. Wishes are therefore being placed near the tree rather than in its branches while it recovers. a wishing tree West Yorkshire South Senior Section China Challenge Badge Page 15
