Chapter 2. System Overview Figure 1. Wireless Motion Sensor and Inductive Charging Pad. The Motion Sensor (Figure 1A) measures three-dimensional motion using accelerometers and gyroscopes. Accelerometers measure linear acceleration while gyroscopes measure angular velocity. Motion sensor data are sampled at 64 Hz. The motion sensor function depends on its current state. The green LED (Figure 1C) on the side of the motion sensor is used to display the state of the sensor. The Charging Pad (Figure 1B) serves as the charging platform for the Motion Sensor, drawing power through a USB connection and transferring it via inductively coupled coils when the Motion Sensor is placed label-side down on the Charging Pad (Figure 1C). When the Charging Pad is powered on, its indicator is green. This indicator changes color to blue when the Motion Sensor is connected, as shown in Figure 1C. Fully charging the Motion Sensor battery from empty will take approximately 3 hours. The green LED on the Motion Sensor will indicate that it is charging and remain ON once fully charged. NOTE: We recommend removing the Motion Sensor from the Charging Pad once the green LED on the motion sensor stops blinking, indicating that a full charge has been reached. 8 Chapter 4. Modes of Operation The Motion Sensor has two modes of operation: Streaming Mode and Memory Mode. When removed from the Charging Pad, the Motion Sensor transitions into one these modes depending on its configuration. The green LED on the side of the motion sensor is used to display the state of the sensor. Streaming Mode In Streaming Mode, real-time data is sent over a Bluetooth connection from the Motion Sensor device(s) and buffered at the PC s virtual serial port, where it is collected by background processes in the software device object. Regardless of how often data is read from the data buffer, the data itself is sampled at 64 Hz. Data can be collected regularly from the motion sensor device object by the developer s application for display, processing, or archival. The most efficient interval between data collections will vary slightly by system and environment. By default, the sensor transitions into Streaming Mode when it is removed from the charging pad. The Bluetooth radio remains powered on and the Motion Sensor is able to accept commands to connect and stream data. If no connection is initiated within 15 minutes, the sensor shuts off. Details for designing custom applications are provided in the Software Development Kit. However, the major steps of interacting with the Motion Sensor in Streaming Mode are summarized as follows: 1. Power the Motion Sensor on by placing it on the Charging Pad 2. Establish a Bluetooth connection with the Motion Sensor 3. Remove the Motion Sensor from the Charging Pad and mount it to the locations of interest 4. Start acquisition to begin streaming data over the Bluetooth connection to the buffer on the host PC 5. Stop acquisition to stop streaming data 6. Disconnect from the Motion Sensor Memory Mode In Memory Mode, acquired data is stored to the flash memory on-board the Motion Sensor. Because no data is streamed, the Bluetooth radio is powered off while in this state. Logging data is achieved in the context of a study which defines the time at which the Motion Sensor begins saving data. This study can be configured to record with a duty cycle (e.g., record the first 15 seconds of each 20 Page 7 of 18 Rev A DCO G221 Great Lakes NeuroTechnologies Inc.2014

second cycle). The Motion Sensor contains enough memory to store 8 hours of data samples at a 100% duty cycle. If a Memory Mode study has been configured, the Motion Sensor goes into a low power state when it is removed from the charging pad until the start time of the study arrives (Figure 2). If the Motion Sensor is removed from the charging pad after the configured start time, it immediately begins recording data (Figure 3). The actual time at which the sensor started recording data is logged. A data collection alarm is set for CycleTime seconds. The sensor then collects samples for RecordTime seconds and sleeps for the remainder of CycleTime. Figure 2. Initiation of data collection in Memory Mode when the Motion Sensor is removed from the Charging Pad before the start time arrives. The Motion Sensor begins collecting data at the configured start time. Figure 3. Initiation of data collection in Memory Mode when the Motion Sensor is removed from the Charging Pad after the start time has elapsed. The Motion Sensor begins collecting data immediately upon removal from charging pad. Page 8 of 18 Rev A DCO G221 Great Lakes NeuroTechnologies Inc.2014

The Motion Sensor must be placed back on the Charging Pad to retrieve data. If the sensor is on the charging pad at the beginning of a cycle, it records all zeros for that interval (Figure 4). NOTE: State transitions will not occur during RecordTime of a memory mode cycle. The state transition will occur once the RecordTime interval has elapsed. One practical implication of this behavior is that the Bluetooth radio will not be activated until RecordTime has completed and the sensor transitions into the on Charging Pad state (Figure 4). Figure 4. Motion Sensor behavior when placed on the Charging Pad during Memory Mode data collection. Once the Motion Sensor Bluetooth Radio is powered on, it can accept commands to retrieve data, erase the flash memory, or power the Motion Sensor off. Retrieving the data can take up to 15 minutes if the memory is full. Erasing the memory can take approximately 90 seconds to complete and returns the device its default Streaming Mode. While the Software Development Kit can be used to design custom applications utilizing Memory Mode in a number of Windows-based development environments, the most thoroughly developed examples are provided in the MATLAB documentation. These can be used as a reference when designing applications in other environments. The major steps of interacting with the Motion Sensor in Memory Mode are summarized as follows: 1. Power the Motion Sensor on by placing it on the Charging Pad 2. Establish a Bluetooth connection with the Motion Sensor Page 9 of 18 Rev A DCO G221 Great Lakes NeuroTechnologies Inc.2014

3. Set the clock on the Motion Sensor 4. Configure the Memory Mode study (e.g., start time, duty cycle) 5. Remove the Motion Sensor from the Charging Pad and mount it to the locations of interest 6. Once data collection is complete, return the Motion Sensor to the Charging Pad 7. Once the Bluetooth radio is powered on, establish a Bluetooth connection with the Motion Sensor 8. Download the data and erase the Motion Sensor Memory Page 10 of 18 Rev A DCO G221 Great Lakes NeuroTechnologies Inc.2014

Chapter 7. Troubleshooting 1. Why won t my computer connect to the motion sensors? If you are unable to successfully connect to a motion sensor, please try the following: A. Ensure that the Motion Sensor is powered on and the Bluetooth adapter in your computer is enabled. B. Make sure that you are not attempting to simultaneously connect to more than 7 Bluetooth devices, counting any motion sensors and other accessories (e.g., mouse, keyboard, printer, cell phone) C. Ensure that Microsoft.NET 4.0, which the API requires, is installed. D. Check to see if your Bluetooth adapter is using the latest drivers. The API does not work with the Widcomm Bluetooth stack, which some drivers use. Updating to the most recent drivers may resolve some communication issues. 2. The LED on my motion sensor lights up when the sensor is on the charging pad, but turns off and does not blink or flash when I remove it from the charging pad. This will happen when the battery is completely depleted. If this behavior persists after you allow 30 minutes for charging, please contact Great Lakes NeuroTechnologies by (support@glneurotech.com) or by phone ( , 9am-5pm EST, Monday-Friday). 3. Why did the sensor stop streaming in the middle of data collection? This will happen if the battery dies or the sensor is out of range of the Bluetooth receiver on the host PC. Please make sure the battery is fully charged. The range will vary depending on the environment. 4. I can connect to the motion sensor, but it does not stream any data when I start acquisition. Remove the sensor from the charging pad the motion sensor does not stream data unless it is off of the charging pad. 5. Why does the motion sensor turn off while I am setting up my experiment and mounting them to the limbs? The motion sensors will power off when they are off the charging pad and in streaming mode, but a Bluetooth connection has not been established. You can either connect to the sensors before you start your setup, or you can touch a charging pad to the sensors once they are mounted to power them on.
