4 Why Set Goals? Setting goals gives you long-term vision and short-term motivation. Goals focus your effort and skills. Setting sharp, clearly defined goals helps you organize your time and your resources so you can make the most of your career.

5 Why Set Goals? Goal setting is a highly researched area of selfmotivation. Some undisputed outcomes of this research include: Goal setting directs attention and affects behavior Goal setting improves performance/outcomes Explicit, measurable goals are more effective Stretching goals with intermediate steps have higher impact Easy goals do not motivate Goals built on strengths are more effective than goals focused on weaknesses From: Coaching Skills: A Handbook by Jenny Rogers (Open University Press, 2008)

6 Activities This will be an interactive workshop. Our activities will include: Examining your career. Assessing your strengths and weaknesses. Reviewing expectations. Setting your goals.

7 Examining Your Career - Worksheet Consider the trajectory of your career thus far. How has its course changed from your original career plan/direction? What issues, events, etc. have affected the course of your career? What needs to be adjusted so it fits in with your next career aspirations? 9 Assessing Your Strengths and Weaknesses Assess the areas where you are at your best, and the areas which need development. What are your strengths? What skills do you need to develop? What resources/mentoring do you need to support your strengths and/or develop your skills?

12 Reviewing Expectations What are the expectations for your next career move? If you are looking to advance in a leadership or professional position, what is the job description and requirements for the position? If you are looking to advance in an academic position, what is the department and university criteria for the promotion?

13 Reviewing Expectations Examining Criteria Do you know your department s criteria for promotion to full professor? In your folder, you will find a worksheet and a copy of your own criteria. Trade your criteria with someone from a different department. Review the criteria, complete the worksheet, and then discuss with your partner.

15 Setting Goals Creating SMART Goals S Specific Goal is clearly written and well-defined. M A R T Measurable Goal has tangible measurements (consider time allotted, resources, costs). Attainable The goal is actually achievable and within your abilities to accomplish. Relevant The goal is relevant and realistic, fitting in with your resources, knowledge, and time. Timeline The goal has a deadline or end date.

16 Setting Your Goals Articulate Your Career Goals What are your long-term goals? Promotion to Full? Administrative Role? What are your short-term goals? Plan for annual goals and monthly goals. How are goals aligned with your department/ unit needs and expectations?

19 What s Next? You ve set your goals, now what? Adopt the practice of filling out an annual report. Consider joining a support group. Start a learning community with your peers. Get an accountability partner. Find a coach.

20 Annual Reporting Use annual reports to help keep track of your accomplishments during the year. This type of self-evaluation can help you see the flow of your progress. Use an electronic calendar (like Google Calendar) to help you easily keep track of start and end dates of projects and goals. 21 Finding Support Groups and Communities The Center for Teaching and Learning CETL offers various groups and learning communities to support faculty. 22 Finding Support Groups and Communities A Learning Community (LC) is a cross-disciplinary group engaging in a yearlong program to promote the scholarship of teaching and learning. 23 Finding Support Accountability Partners and Coaches Discuss your career path and your goals with an accountability partner or coach. Pair up with someone from this workshop! Hold each other accountable for the goals you have set today. Ask a recently promoted colleague to act as your coach as you pursue going up for full professor. Consult with your department chair to find other colleagues to serve as coaches.
