2 Our Mid IB Summer Courses are for students between the first and second year of the IB Diploma Programme. The teachers are really experienced and superb. They are passionate about their subjects and love teaching. IB Summer School student The summer vacation is the time to consolidate your learning and prepare for the year ahead. Oxford Study Courses holds its US Mid IB Summer Courses for the 20th year in Our Mid IBDP Summer Courses take place at Harvard University and MIT in Boston, USA, giving you the chance to sample the way of life enjoyed by students at these prestigious institutions. What to expect from the OSC Mid IB Summer Courses in Boston: Residential courses at Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Highly experienced IB Diploma teachers from excellent IB schools, many of whom are examiners A dedicated team of Deans to look after all your non-academic needs and provide exciting and varied activities in the afternoons and evenings, and 24 hour pastoral care A focused academic course covering key IB subjects You study each IB subject for one week and you can take up to three subjects At least 17.5 hours of class time per subject 1-2 hours of homework each night Small groups (normally 8-10 per group) Written reports for all subject classes and consultations Optional extra classes and/or individual consultations designed to support your IB studies and your progress to university A beautiful and stimulating university environment Increased confidence, new international friendsand experience of university life 2014 Mid IB Summer Course dates Our Mid IB Summer Courses run for three weeks in the summer. Our 2014 dates are: Week 1: Sunday 6th July - Friday 11th July Week 2: Sunday 13th July - Friday 18th July Week 3: Sunday 20th July - Friday 25th July You can attend the OSC Mid IB Summer Course in Boston for 1, 2 or all 3 weeks.
3 Arrival You should arrive on the Sunday of your first week (the day before your first class). Registration will take place every Sunday between 12:00 and 17:00 at Harvard you must arrive before 17:00 on Sunday. Classes for each new course begin on Monday morning every week. If you need to arrive on Saturday instead of Sunday, please let us know an extra night's accommodation incurs an additional charge. Departure You will be free to leave from 14:00 on the Friday of your final course. Make sure you book your departing flight late enough so that so you do not miss any of your last day. If you need to stay on the Friday night after your final course has finished, please let us know an extra night's accommodation will incur an additional charge. Morning Subjects: We are proud to offer a wide range of subjects on our OSC Mid IB Summer Courses in Boston - see the table below for a full list. You study one morning class per week - other options are available in the afternoons, including taking a second subject. The orange dots indicate which subjects run in each week. If you are unsure of which Route you are taking, please check with your school. In order to keep class sizes as small as possible and ensure you are in the best class for your academic needs, we may change the order in which you take your subjects.
4 Afternoon Options In addition to Mid IB morning classes, students can opt to take further sessions in the afternoons. These include 8 hour Second Subject Classes, 4 hour Afternoon Classes, and a range of One-to-One Options. Afternoon Classes We offer Mid IB Afternoon Classes for either 4 or 8 hours per week. Both types run 4 days per week, Monday to Thursday. For timetabling reasons, you can only take one afternoon class each week. Not all the classes listed below will run each week - the timetabling is partly determined by how many students sign up for each class. Second Subject Afternoon Classes These extended, 8 hour afternoon classes give students an opportunity to review a second subject during the week. They are not suitable for students who are taking these same subjects during the morning. These classes are offered during week 1 only - 7th-11th July. Inevitably, the morning classes will go into the subject in greater depth than these afternoon classes - please note that students may book Private Tuition if they have specific needs that are not covered by the content indicated below. Please note that classes that cover assessable components in the IB Diploma Programme (e.g. Internal Assessments) are designed to develop students' skills and increase their understanding of the work required; students are not provided with direct support for their personal assessable work. 5 US College Fair OSC's College Fair gives our students the opportunity to talk to admissions officers from around 25 different colleges and universities. Representatives from some of the most prestigious institutions in New England attend the event visit their stalls to find out what they can offer you. The 2014 College Fair takes place on Wednesday 16th July. Harvard Yale MIT The OSC College Fair is a great opportunity to: Compare different types of colleges and universities Find out about 'Liberal Arts' and the variety of fun, interesting courses offered Discover the range of extra-curricular activities offered, including clubs, sports, volunteering opportunities and internships Discuss the application process with our resident College Counsellors Talk to our College Finance Advisor about scholarships and other finance options Look at what postgraduate opportunities might be available for your future college career Imagine yourself as a student at college in the USA Colleges and Universities who have participated in previous OSC College Fairs include:
6 University Applications Course The US UAC will run from Sunday 13th - Saturday 19th July, It is based in Boston and is organised to fit in conveniently with our Mid IB Summer Courses. This course was developed to specifically help IB students make their way through the complexities of applying to US universities. What to expect from the University Applications Course: Group sessions and workshops on all the important information needed by students wanting to apply to university in the US, with time for students to discuss their own particular interests. One to one private guidance sessions with an experienced college counsellor our students always find these invaluable in helping them plan their university application strategy. Guided visits to a range of universities and colleges in the Boston area which illustrate the differences in courses and institutions that students may consider in their applications. The College Fair: Admissions Officers from 25 different US universities visit us at MIT to tell us about their colleges, courses and requirements. Location Boston, USA Boston is a great city combining the dynamism of a buzzing college town with the historic grandeur you would expect of one of the crucibles of the American Revolution. Walk the Freedom Trail to see the some of the most important sites of the War of Independence. Explore the Downtown area and Cambridge to find endless shops, cafes, restaurants, museums and art galleries. Being a coastal city, there are beautiful beaches just a short bus ride away. And don t forget the many world-renowned universities and colleges, including Boston College, Brandeis, Tufts, Boston University and the places where our courses are based, Harvard and MIT.
7 Harvard University This is where OSC students live while on our Pre IB and Mid IB Boston Summer Schools. Founded in 1636, Harvard is the oldest university in the US and one of the prestigious Ivy League institutions. Harvard s founder, John Harvard, was educated at Emmanuel College, Cambridge (UK), and Harvard's atmosphere and architecture were designed to echo the college traditions of Oxford and Cambridge. Alumni include: eight US presidents including FDR, JFK and Barack Obama, T. S. Eliot, Ban Ki-Moon, Natalie Portman, Bill Gates, Henry David Thoreau, Matt Damon, Mark Zuckerberg. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) This is where classes take place on our Pre IB and Mid IB Summer Schools. MIT was founded in 1861 and is one of the top universities in the world, having educated many of the globe's leading scientists, economists and entrepreneurs. It is an inspiring place to study with air-conditioned classrooms and state-of-the-art computer rooms and libraries. Alumni include: Kofi Annan, Buzz Aldrin, Richard Feynman, the founders of Intel and Texas Instruments, 24 Nobel Prize winners.
