1 Name: username: Lab Date and Time: CSC 101: Lab #4 HTML and the World Wide Web (Part III) Lab Report Due Date: 5:00pm, day after lab session Pledged Assignment: This lab document should be considered a pledged graded assignment, as specified in the CSC 101L syllabus. When outside of the lab session, external help on graded aspects of the lab should only be obtained from the instructors or graduate teaching assistants. Purpose: The purpose of this lab is to allow you to gain additional experience in writing HTML and to allow you to develop web pages using colors, forms, and scripts. Your web pages will be published and graded on the WFU webserver using the techniques you learned in the previous three weeks. Be Careful: We still need to be concerned with correct capitalization and not introducing spaces or other weird characters in the filenames. Also, type, instead of cutting and pasting, any quoted information (as the quotes may not copy over correctly). Please use Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox as your browser today. Basic Webpage Step 1: Create a CSC101Lab/lab4 folder for this lab. Open Notepad (Start, All Programs, Accessories, Notepad). Save the blank file that appears in your lab4 folder as index.html. To do this, choose Save from the File menu, then in the Save window that pops up, set the File name as index.html and set the Save as type: as All Files (*.*), then press the Save button. Also, download and save the coffeebeans.png image from the lab webpage into your lab4 folder. Step 2: Use the <html>, <head>, <title>, and <body> tags appropriately (along with their closing tags) to build the basic structure of an HTML page. Refer to Lab 2 s pre-lab document (available on the web) for how these are used if needed. Give your page the HTML title of: Lab 4 Virtual Coffee Shop To verify your page is correct, load it from your hard drive, using the File, Open File menu options (or Ctrl-O in Chrome). Throughout the rest of the lab, continue to test your HTML by refreshing/loading it from your hard drive. We will move your files to the WFU webserver at the end of the lab. Setting HTML Colors Step 3: Add to the <body> tag the appropriate properties to be able to change the background and text colors. Choose colors from this webpage so that your color scheme resembles the webpage colors used below. Essentially, we would like the page to have something close to dark brown text and a golden brown background. You are required to use hexadecimal RGB colors. Step 4: Use the following tags {<h2>, <hr>, <img>} to complete the rest of the page so that it matches the webpage shown below. The coffee beans image should be sized, using HTML properties of the <img> tag, to be displayed at a width of 185 and height of 95.
2 Question 1: (4 pts) Choose either your background color or text color and answer the questions below: a. What is the hexadecimal representation of the color you chose? # b. Explain the relative amounts of red, green, and blue your color makes use of (a lot, a little, or a medium amount of each?) Red: Blue: Green: Adding An HTML Form The next steps will lead you through the process of adding an HTML form to your webpage which will allow visitors to purchase a latte from your virtual coffee house. Your goal, from following the steps below, will be to have your webpage appear as follow: Step 5: Start a form on your webpage using the following HTML (feel free to copy and paste, but be careful the quotes copy over correctly): <form> Size: Flavor: Extras: <br /> <br /> Your name: <input type="submit" name="cost" value="get Cost" onclick="docalculation(); return false;" /> <input type="submit" name="submit" value="submit Order" onclick="checkname(); return validated;" /> </form>
3 Step 6: Within the form tags, add the following HTML form elements: 6a: After the word Size:, add the following select element <select name="size"> <option value="0">tall ($2.99)</option> <option value="1">grande ($3.49)</option> <option value="2">venti ($3.99)</option> </select> 6b: After the word Extras:, add the following checkbox element <input type="checkbox" name="soy" value="1" /> Soy milk (+$0.50) Step 7: On your own, add these additional elements: 7a. After the word Flavor:, add another select element, with four options. The options should be given values 0 through 3, and have the following text: Vanilla, Hazelnut, Caramel, and Peppermint respectively. Don t forget the closing </select> tag! 7b. After the Soy Milk checkbox, add another checkbox element, setting the name property to be shot and the value property to have the value 1 and with the wording being Additional shot (+$0.50) 7c. After the Your name: text add a textfield element, with the name property set to name. At this point, refresh your webpage off of your hard drive into your browser. Your webpage should look like the example page shown previously. Question 2: (4 pts) Why is it desirable to make the Soy milk and Additional shot form elements be checkboxes instead of radio buttons? This is a good checkpoint to stop at and ask the instructors if you are on the right track! Adding A Client-Side Script A client-side script is a program that runs within the web browser (as opposed to a server-side script that runs on the webserver) to support interaction with the user. For this lab, we will make use of a client-side script to let the user know the total cost of her order and to validate that a name has been provided before sending the data off to be processed. A client-side script can see which values have been selected for each form element, and thus can be very powerful for making sure forms have been filled out correctly and for summarizing form choices. Step 8: Open the clientscript.txt file from the lab webpage and copy all of the text. Paste it into your index.html file in Notepad so that it sits between the </title> and </head> tags and save the file. Reload your webpage into your browser using the Reload button.
4 Question 3: (4 pts) Suggest, given what you know about the <head></head> section of HTML web pages, why scripts are placed in this area of the webpage instead of in the <body> section. Question 4: (6 pts) Make sure the script you just added works by first selecting a drink type and clicking the Get Cost button. What happened when you hit the Get Cost button, and was what you saw correct? Make sure the name field is empty. Then hit the Submit Order button. What happened when you hit the Submit Order button, and does that seem reasonable/correct? Connecting To A Server-Side Script To complete this lab, we will connect your virtual coffee shop to a server side script that will send you a notice of confirmation of your order and which will maintain a list of all orders made today. Step 9: To connect your webpage to the server-side script (a program running on the WFU webserver) change your <form> opening tag to the following: <form action=" method="post"> The value provided for the action property indicates that the information in your form will be submitted to a program that I wrote that is running on the WFU webserver. The value provided for the method property, post, indicates that you are sending (posting) information to the webserver that will change the state of the webserver (it will now have additional records in its Fulfilled Orders list). Sometimes you would see the term get instead of post. get is typically only used when information is just being requested from a webserver instead of changing the webserver. Step 10: After changing the <form> tag above, save your webpage and re-load it in your browser using the Reload button. Select a drink, enter your name in the text box, and hit the Submit Order button. Answer the questions on the next page. If everything worked correctly, you should see a webpage very similar to the one at the top of the next page, but with your personalized information.
5 Question 5: (5 points) We have seen two types of scripts today: client-side (running in the browser on your laptop) and server-side (running on the WFU webserver). The server-side script is maintaining a list of all orders that have been submitted by anyone, including those through other students webpages. Indicate below YES or NO for whether you believe we could have put this work of maintaining a list of all coffee orders as part of the client-side script instead of as part of the server-side script. YES or NO Reasoning behind your choice: Question 6: (5 points) Is it possible for a coffee order to ever make it to the server-side script without a name associated with the order? YES or NO Reasoning behind your choice: Transfer to Web Server Step 11: Using the FTP application from previous weeks, connect to the wfu.edu computer and copy your lab4 folder you have been working in on your laptop into the www-home/csc101lab folder on wfu.edu. This may require you navigating between folders on both your laptop (the left-side of the FTP window) and on the wfu.edu computer (the right-side of the FTP window) so that you can drag and drop appropriately. Step 12: Go back to the following address: and change the permissions on your webpage so everyone can see your page. If you don t remember how to do this step, refer back to the Lab 2 manual. Step 13: Now that you have a copy of the files on the Wake Forest web server that you originally had on your computer, you can test that you can see them through the World Wide Web. Use the address to test your webpage, changing yourusername to your actual username. You should make sure that your coffee shop works correctly now that it has been transferred to the WFU webserver.
