3 Vokkero is a complete system composed of a set of portable radio units and a wide range of headsets and accessories to choose from. It allows multiple users to create an instantaneous, continuous, and secure audio conference. This technology is now in the service of international referees for many sports. Originally developed according to the specifi cations of the Professional Soccer League and the French Refereeing National Directorate, the Vokkero system was then adopted by the UEFA in order to equip its elite referees for the Champions League and Europa League matches. The Vokkero system, which is supported by the overwhelming majority of international soccer organisations like the CAF, the AFC and the CONCACAF, has become the official communication system for all the European and world soccer leagues (Brazil, Mexico, Algeria, South Africa, Qatar, Korea, etc.) and the most important international competitions such as: the 2011 Asian Cup, the 2006 and 2010 World Cups, and the 2008 Euro Cup to name just a few. The Vokkero system has also proven itself in other team sports such as handball, rugby, cricket, basketball and ice hockey. In particular, it was adopted by the EHF (European Handball Federation), the IHF (International Handball Federation) and by leading handball nations such as France, Spain, Norway, and Denmark. Consequently, the shouts, whistles, singing, music from the supporters are completely fi ltered. For its part, the referee s whistle is partially toned down so it is still audible and bearable for the rest of the refereeing team. Another interesting aspect is the encryption applied to the Vokkero system s communications. This is an essential point for referees who want to keep their exchanges private, thus ensuring that they will not be retransmitted without their knowledge by the media or disrupted by a third party.
