Single Board Computer Hardware Configuration The 3x00 and 4x00 handler configuration requires two modifications on the single board computer; the power selection and the COM2 interface selection. The illustration below outlines the different connections available on the single board computer. Refer to document FPCAUTO02 #D03730AD for finished computer assembly if needed. Figure 1 ROBO-8712VLA JP2 JP3 Figure 2 ROBO-8712VLA Page 4
AT/ATX Power Selection The power selection must be changed from the default of ATX power selection to the AT power selection as indicated with the star sign below. JP3 is located below JP2 as illustrated in Figure 1. See figure 2 for graphical representation of actual jumper settings. RS-422 The ROBO-8712VLA single board computer (SBC) comes with a built in RS422 serial communication port and shares the same connector with COM2. To use the RS422, the SBC must be configured properly using jumpers located at JP2. JP2 is located below the COM2/RS-232/422/485 connector as illustrated in Figure 1. Configure the jumpers according to the interface selection indicated with the star sign below. See figure 2 for graphical representation of actual jumper settings. Page 5
BIOS Configuration After configuring the SBC hardware, the BIOS will have to be configured properly so that NO resource conflicts will occur under Windows XP. Resource conflicts occur because the handler hardware configuration still uses a legacy ISA Galil controller card. Note that the single board computer s BIOS is not necessarily configured properly when received from the vendor. Therefore the BIOS must be re-configured to use default settings before changing specific areas of the BIOS to match the handler s hardware configuration. Entering the BIOS To enter the BIOS, press the DEL key during the boot process after powering up the computer. A message at the bottom of the screen will indicate the appropriate time to press the DEL key as shown below. Page 6

Windows XP Installation The Windows XP operating system will need to be loaded into the computer s hard drive. The Windows XP installation CD disk is capable of installing directly from the CD disk. Because of this, the BIOS has been configured to boot from the CD drive before booting from the hard disk drive so that the installation can be processed directly from the Windows XP installation CD disk. After the install process is completed, the devices detected by the operating system will not have the proper drivers installed. Follow the instructions given under the heading Hardware Driver Installation. Installation Power on the computer and insert the Windows XP CD into the CD drive. This process should be performed quickly so that the hardware will detect the CD disk and start the boot process directly from the CD disk. The installation setup will begin after booting from the CD disk. During this stage of the installation, the hardware will be detected so that the installation can continue. Page 17
When the Welcome To Setup screen is displayed, press the Enter key to continue. The Windows XP Licensing Agreement screen will then be displayed. Press F8 after reviewing and accepting the agreement. Page 18
The next screen concerns the hard disk drive configuration. If the hard disk drive is partitioned then it is recommended that the partition be removed so that a clean Windows XP installation can be performed before continuing with the next step. At this stage the hard disk drive should be unpartitioned as shown below. Press the C key to create a new partition. Change the partition to approximately half the size of the hard drive and create the new partition. After the new partition is created, the installation will return to the hard drive configuration screen. Press the C key to create the second partition. Accept the default selection to create the new partition. After the second partition is created, the installation will return to the hard drive configuration screen. The idea is to partition the hard drive 50/50. Page 19

Windows 98 Known Issues Background This computer was not designed to operate with Windows 98. It may be possible to successfully run this operating system, but this will be left to approved individual cases only and it should be understood that no support for this computer with Windows 98 operating system currently exists. The purpose of this section is not to outline a procedure on how to load Windows 98 operating system, but rather to record any issues that have been observed after installing this operating system for special customers that request it and were approved. This section was made so that any issues caused by loading Windows 98 operating system could be recorded along with any known solutions. If any other issues with Windows 98 and this computer are observed, please contact the BP Hardware Engineering department. Make sure to record the exact issue in detail and any solution if known at that time. Current Issues 1. Issue: SIIG Drivers have conflicts with this hardware configuration and BPWin will not operate. Solution: Remove the USB PCI card so that no more than 2 are used. The SIIG PCI card will also have to be placed in a PRIMARY PCI location. This location can be #3 as shown in the following image. Note that the USB controllers and SIIG card may need drivers reinstalled. SIIG CARD IS IN PRIMARY PCI SLOT #3. ONLY 2 USB PCI CARDS ARE INSTALLED Page 78
Windows XP Known Issues If any other issues with Windows XP and this computer are observed and are not listed under this section, please contact the BP Hardware Engineering department. Make sure to record the exact issue in detail and any solution if known at that time. Problem 1: SIIG Parallel I/O PCI card CI/OBOARD03 will not communicate. Solution: When this happens, manually change the SIIG card to IRQ5 through the BIOS set up. This issue seems to be independent of the back plane used so it does not matter whether XP OS is loaded in a Carlo Gavazzi upgraded computer or if it is loaded in our current FPCAUTO01/FPCAUTO02 computers. This issue, when it has been observed, apparently only happens when the RTC3 card is installed. Also, place the SIIG card in a PRIMARY PCI slot, which would be physically closer to the Small Board Computer(SBC). To manually change to IRQ5, enter the BIOS by pressing the DEL key during the boot process after powering up the computer. A message at the bottom of the screen will indicate the appropriate time to press the DEL key as shown below. Page 79
Enter the PnP/PCI Configuration in the main screen. Scroll through the INT Pins until Simple COMM appears on the right hand side as the first item on that INT Pin. Note that the INT Pin number shown may be different on other computers as this is automatically assigned by XP OS. Simple COMM is the first item for the shown INT Pin. Page 80
Manually change this INT Pin to IRQ5. Save the Bios settings and Restart the system. Page 81
Problem 2: Windows XP freezes upon initial boot up. Solution: If Parallel I/O card CI/OBOARD07MOD is installed, Make sure that BIOS settings are configured correctly. Please refer to the BIOS Configuration section and the Parallel I/O Drivers section for proper settings. Another technique to try is to go to the Galil DMC 10x0 Motion Controller Properties in the Device Manager and change the IRQ setting until a No conflicts message is shown. Toggle IRQ until a No conflicts condition is reached. Record this IRQ value. Next, change the IRQ resources under the PnP/PCI Configuration in the BIOS to fix this condition. Set the Legacy ISA, which is reserved for the Galil controller, to the previously found IRQ number. Page 82
