1 December 2015 Valley Wilds Volume 24 Issue 12 A publication of the LARPD Open Space Unit Pumas in Parkland While on one knee, beginning to examine a dead buck partially covered in leaves and sticks, I noticed movement in my peripheral vision. Looking up the wooded hillside, my eyes were met by those of a cougar, only 25 feet away. This was in September It was the first confirmed mountain lion in Sycamore Grove Park. Ever since then I have been on a mission to learn all that I can about these elusive animals known as pumas as well as cougars or mountain lions. Initiation of Cougar Protocol The cougar that was present in September, 2004, was not the first cougar in Sycamore Grove Park. Undoubtedly, mountain lions have been in this area as long as deer (their favorite food) have. However, with the increase in park acreage over the past 15 years, more mountain lion habitat has been added to our parkland. IN THIS Issue Pumas in Parkland This Month s Ranger-led Programs and Activities Park News Livermore Area Recreation and Park District 4444 East Ave. Livermore, CA Ranger Office: This has led to an increase in staff awareness and identification skills related to mountain lion activity. With the confirmed presence of that cougar 11 years ago, LARPD rangers began development of a cougar protocol. This protocol was created to provide guidelines and procedures for staff to follow when a mountain lion is known to be in the park. Of utmost importance is ensuring public safety while maintaining healthy ecosystems for native wildlife. To that end, we post signage at park entrances alerting visitors of recent mountain lion activity (when a confirmed cougar has been in the park). Since we don t know exactly when a cougar has left the park, these signs remain in position for a few days following the confirmed sighting. If the animal is still present, we close all or part of the park, depending on the situation and location. We created a mechanism for reporting sightings and maintaining a database of those By Ranger Patti Cole Photo by Dawn Soles reports to provide longitudinal data of possible cougar activity in our open space parks. This data spans from the 2004 sighting to the most recent confirmed sighting a trail camera photo on November 15, The average number of annual reported cougar sightings in or just outside Sycamore Grove Park over the past 11 years is 13. This includes not only sightings but also kill/feeding sites, tracks, and other signs of cougar activity. Approximately 80% of reported sightings cannot be confirmed. While some of the sightings were simply not possible to confirm or deny due to various factors, clearly many reported sightings were misidentifications. It is not at all unusual to have coyotes, bobcats, foxes, domestic dogs and cats, or other animals Continued on Page 3

Sing-A-Long Campfire Sunday, December 13 4:00 pm Join us tonight to sit by the campfire and sing some songs that celebrate this time of year. Feel free to bring a hot dog and fixins to roast over the fire. S more fixins and hot chocolate will be provided. A $3 per person donation is requested. There are no seats in the campfire area so bring a blanket or chair. Cancelled if raining. Space is limited in the campfire area so please call (925) for reservations. Ranger Dawn Soles Sycamore Grove Park, Reservable Picnic Area The Yule Log Hunt Sunday, December 20 2:00 pm Grab your silliest hats, and join us to hunt for the Yule Log. We ll prepare with games and tales of ancient celebrations. Then we ll hunt for that elusive log. Then we ll gather around the fire and make our own Yule logs to take home. Cancelled if raining. 3 Pumas (Continued) mistaken for cougars. Distance, lighting, and view obstructions can easily lead to misidentification. Whatever the situation, please know it is always important that any possible mountain lion sighting be reported to ranger staff immediately. Trail cameras In early 2015 ranger staff installed multiple trail cameras in Sycamore Grove Park. The cameras were strategically positioned on known animal trails, where prey and predator species are known to frequent. One of the species we were targeting for documentation from the cameras was mountain lions. While reviewing one camera s photos from late summer, we saw the first cougar photos from this effort. Several mountain lion images were captured over various nights, appearing to be possibly two different lions. The last images were taken on October 1st. Those of you who visited the park soon after October 1 may have noticed the signs at the park entrances about this activity. There are steps you can take to ensure your safety while visiting our parklands: Check out the California Department of Fish & Wildlife web site (wildlife.ca.gov) for more information. Also read their Keep Me Wild page on mountain lions. Be aware that cougars are most active between dusk and dawn and plan your activities with this in mind. Recreate in open space areas with a friend; being alone can increase risk. Keep young children close, especially in areas where deer can be found. Cougars are not new to this area. Where there are deer, there can be cougars. If you encounter a cougar, do not run. Face the cougar and back away slowly. If you have young children with you, pick them up without squatting down. If a cougar approaches you or threatens you, stand tall, wave your arms over your head and yell loudly at the cougar. Do whatever you can to appear larger. If you can safely reach rocks, etc., throw them at the cougar. Keep pets close. Based on statistical analyses it appears that during the day, cougars shy away from dogs. However, at night, when cougars are more active and more focused on hunting, dogs are more likely to be perceived as food by cougars. If attacked, fight back. No need to panic!!! We have no real proof that there is an increase in mountain lion activity in Sycamore Grove Park at this time. Rather, the new trail cameras are providing us with documentation of activity that may be quite typical for this area. 4 Pumas (Continued) Know Your Snakes Final comments Again we strongly encourage you to report possible sightings to ranger staff. Call the ranger office at (925) to make the report. If you leave a voic please include: your name & contact info date & time of sighting location (be as precise as possible - use miles from specific entrance, trail name, nearest trail junction, landmarks) a complete description of what you saw (number of cougars, what was it doing, which direction did it head, did it appear to see you, how did it react to you, approximate tail length, body height and weight, coloring, and anything else you may have noticed). And, lastly, I do follow safety procedures when investigating possible cougar activity in parkland, most importantly, having one or two other rangers join me. So, in the situation described at the beginning of this article, I did have two other rangers there. Once I saw the cougar I stood up and backed away slowly. The animal stayed by its hard-won meal into the night and was gone before daylight. Funding for the trail cameras was generously provided by the LARPD Foundation. Sycamore Grove Park 2016 Parking Passes! We hope to have our 2016 annual passes on sale starting December 3. Those who purchased a 2015 pass will receive a renewal form in the mail shortly. For the first time in over a decade we are changing our fee schedule: Livermore Residents $60 (Seniors age 60+ price is $30) Non-residents $90 ( Seniors age 60+ price is $60) Passes still represent a tremendous savings for the frequent park visitor, especially because the daily parking fee will increase to $7 per vehicle on January 20. 5 Know Park News: Your Snakes Prescribed Burns If you noticed smoke rising above Sycamore Grove Park on November 13, 18 or 23 don t worry, it was intentional! The Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department was conducting prescribed burns in the upper portion of the park. There are many benefits to burning. A major benefit is that burning removes thatch build up that forms when the non-native annual plants die each year. Burning allows the native perennial plants underneath to get more sunlight, flourish and reproduce! These burns provide valuable training opportunities for fire agencies and ranger staff. When we are called upon to respond to a wildfire we will have experience that will help us control it quickly and safely.
