2 City of London & Heathrow Animal Reception Centre The Heathrow Animal Reception Centre is run by the City of London Corporation s Department of Environmental Services. Since the 1850s, the City of London Corporation has played an important role in the development of animal health and welfare. Its responsibilities for imported animals and the prevention of disease extend beyond the City to encompass all Greater London, some 610 square miles. Most animals entering the EU from another country have to pass through a Border Inspection Post. The Animal Reception Centre is the live animal Border Inspection Post at Heathrow Airport. The Centre s responsibility is to enforce the requirements of UK and EU legislation on importing animals and transporting them by air. For more than 20 years the Heathrow Animal Reception Centre has been a world leader in the care of animals during transport. The specialist demands on the City s Animal Health and Welfare Service means that it has a highly experienced team that is able to train a wide range of professionals in advanced animal handling skills, including Vets, Police, Fire and Rescue and Government Agencies.
3 The Facilities The facilities for the care and welfare of animals held at the centre are of a world class standard. The dog and cat holding facilities have individually heated areas with access to a large outdoor run. There are four reptile and amphibian holding rooms, equipped with temperature, lighting and humidity controls. The dedicated bird wing has its own air handling unit, eliminating the spread of airborne pathogens. Computerised lighting controls enable the birds natural photoperiods to be copied, and the sunrise and variable moonlight to be imitated. The large animal holding facility caters for horses and farm livestock, and the fish border inspection post provides a dedicated facility for inspecting and handling the 35 million fish that are received each year. These facilities, in addition to our specialist equipment, are used to provide the practical setting within which much of our course content is delivered, allowing candidates the opportunity to develop real skills in a top facility.
4 Animal Handling Courses Reptiles, Amphibians and Birds. Our most popular course for both professionals and students is our Reptile, Amphibian and Bird Practical Handling Day. The programme is aimed at professionals whose day to day work may involve handling reptiles or birds, or who may be required to handle hazardous species on an ad hoc basis. Students who are studying animal science or management, will also benefit from this unique practical handling opportunity. Course Content: Zoonoses and risk of injury Risk assessing novel scenarios Working with venomous species Equipment and PPE Handling technique theory and practice Duration: Approximately 3 hours theory and 2 hours practical handling.
5 We also offer the following one day courses: Reptile Identification A review of trade and legislation Tools and methods for identifying to a species level Practical identification practice using live specimens and artefacts Transport of Animals by Air or Transport of Animals by Road A review of the legislative requirements Transport vehicles, containers and equipment Maximising animal welfare Rabies (and/or other zoonoses) Contingency Planning Symptoms, diagnosis and transmission of the disease Measures for controlling the spread of infection Health and Safety and Animal Handling Health, Safety, and Working with Animals Zoonoses and preventing transmission Appropriate use of PPE and handling equipment Risk assessing species by handling scenario Husbandry and Welfare of Exotic Species Housing, nutrition and health needs of exotic species Assessing the welfare of captive exotics Identification of species in the pet trade And if you have more specific training needs, we can tailor make you a course to match your organisational requirements.
