Through the middle of the country runs the equator, which is an imaginary line that goes around the very middle of the Earth. The capital city is called Nairobi. Kenya is a popular destination for tourists who can go on safari. Kenya is home to lots of amazing wildlife including lions, elephants, giraffes, baboons, rhinos, hippos, buffalo and ostriches. Find Kenya on a world map. Can you see how many countries share a border with Kenya? The Samburu tribe There are over 40 different tribes in Kenya, and each tribe has its own history, language and traditions. People from the Samburu tribe mostly live in northern Kenya and are sometimes called the butterfly people because of their colourful clothes and jewellery. They have their own language, which is also called Samburu. Most Samburu people are pastoralists, which means that they are farmers who take care of animals, such as cows, goats, sheep and camels. They drink the milk from these animals and sometimes mix it with blood from their cows. This might sound strange, but it is a very nutritious drink that is high in protein. 2 Stella s story Stella Our Global Leporole Responsibility is a Samburu PowerPoint woman. presentation, available from She christianaid.org.uk/childrens-resources lives in a village called Lengwenyi in northern stopwatch Kenya, (optional). which is near a town called Isiolo. Her home is a small hut made of wood, mud and bits of material. In Lengwenyi it can be very dry; it mostly rains during two seasons each year. During the dry seasons, in between, Stella s husband often has to take the family s animals on a long journey to find food. While the animals are gone Stella and her children sometimes struggle to find enough to eat. She often has to depend on support from the government. Christian Aid is a charity that works to help people like Stella in Kenya. It works with local organisations who understand the problems well and know how best to change things. Christian Aid supports a group called Anglican Development Services Mount Kenya East (ADSMKE), which is part of the Anglican Church of Kenya. ADSMKE has been helping the people in Stella s village for a number of years. One of the ways they have helped is by giving people chickens. They taught Stella how to take care of the chickens and then they gave her 15 baby chicks. Each chick only costs the charity around 2/ Stella says: Among our people, the Samburu, they didn t know the value of poultry. But myself, I ve seen the benefits of keeping poultry. The poultry lay eggs. I will use the eggs for food and sell a few for money, which is an equivalent of taking milk from our animals. Stella uses the money she makes from selling the eggs to buy medicine, food, detergents for washing clothes and sugar for making tea. Stella says: The eggs from the hens have made a big difference in my life.

3 Who is Christian Aid? Christian Aid is a charity that raises money in Ireland, the UK and Spain. They use that money to support local partner organisations, like ADSMKE, in over 40 countries around the world. Through the work of these partners, Christian Aid helps people who are living in poverty to get the things they need, like clean water, enough food, safe places to live and healthcare. Rainfall in Kenya One of the difficulties that Stella faces is that she lives in a very dry part of Kenya. In Ireland we have four seasons: spring, summer, autumn and winter. Where Stella lives, they have a dry season and a rainy season. Young girls are given simple necklaces by their fathers and later receive more elaborate necklaces when they get married. Cut the top off an empty 2 litre soft drink bottle with a pair of scissors. Put stones into the bottom of the bottle so that it doesn t blow over in a strong wind. Cover the stones with water. Mark the level of the water as zero on the outside of the bottle using a marker-pen. Draw a measuring scale from zero in centimetres, using a ruler. Alternatively you could place a ruler inside the bottle and note down the level of the water at the start (so you can measure any change once you put the rain gauge outdoors). Flip the top of the bottle over and put it into the cut end so that it acts as a funnel. Secure it in place with paperclips. Leave the bottle somewhere out in the open away from obstacles, like trees and buildings. You could take a measurement once a week for a month and calculate the average weekly rainfall. 5 Raise money for Christian Aid s work around the world Ask your parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles and cousins to sponsor you to decorate an egg. Design your own patterns. If you are sponsored 20p or 25c per egg you ll raise 2 or 2.50, which is enough to pay for one of the chicks that was given to Stella Leporole in Lengwenyi, Kenya. Stella Leporole lives in a very dry part of northern Kenya. Christian Aid s partner ADSMKE gave her chicks, and taught her how to look after them, to help her to earn money and provide food for her children during the dry season. Each family receives 15 chicks, each of which costs around 2 or Christian Aid works with partners all around the world helping people like Stella to work their own way out of poverty. By raising money for Christian Aid, you ll be helping people like Stella around the world.

6 Other eggscellent fundraising Ideas Bake sale Turn eggs into cakes and buns. Invite parents to come and give donations for them. Breakfast club Take a small donation for a special eggy breakfast before school. You could serve boiled eggs, omelette, eggy bread or pancakes. Egg and spoon race Hold a sponsored egg and spoon race or walk around the school playground or playing field. (Use hard-boiled eggs or rubber ones to avoid mess!) Egg hunt Hide brightly decorated hard-boiled eggs (or chocolate ones) and suggest an entrance donation to try and find them. Egg parachute Hold a school competition to see who can design the best protective capsule or parachute to protect an egg when dropped from a height. Have teams donate to enter, and spectators donate to watch. Samburu jewellery Make and sell Samburu inspired necklaces and bangles.
