The Tank Museum Education Service Workshops and activities Discover our exciting range of curriculum linked workshops for schools using the Museum s unique collection of historic objects and armoured vehicles. We cover a range of curriculum topic areas and work with you to ensure that the visit supports your learning objectives. We deal with the subject of warfare sensitively, focussing on the realities of conflict and the personal stories of those that took part. Pick and choose from our menu of workshops to build your ideal visit. The admission price of 4.50 per pupil includes 2 hours of workshops or tours. Additional workshops can be added at a price of 2.00 per pupil. Accompanying adults are free. All workshops can be adapted according to the age of the students and the focus of study, call us to discuss your requirements. This leaflet is printed on recycled paper 1

3 STEM workshop offer The Education Service would like to increase the amount of workshops that we offer based on Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. The Museum has a unique collection which is a fantastic resource for engaging students with the real life application of STEM. Until August 2015 we are offering a discounted rate of 3.00 per pupil to Primary schools that would like us to build a bespoke, 2 hour STEM workshop for them. Call us to discuss your requirements. 3

4 The First World War Tommy in the trenches Interactive tour Key Stage: 2/3/4 Curriculum: History This workshop uses the Museum s superb reconstructed trench system and items from the handling collection including uniforms, helmets, rifles, gasmasks and grenades to give students a real and immediate experience of what life was like for the average Tommy and why it was necessary to invent the tank. First World War tank experience Interactive talk and activities Key Stage: 2/3/4 Curriculum: History The Tank Museum is the only place in the world you can climb inside a real First World War Mark IV tank. This session includes an interactive talk on why the tank was invented, how it worked and what life was like for the crew. Real life of a war horse Key Stage: 2/3 Curriculum: History, English Students will explore how animals were used in the conflict and use their findings to write the diary entry of horse, donkey or mule at war. They will meet our replica cavalry horse Blackjack and handle real kit and equipment worn by cavalry horses. They will visit the Museum s War Horse to 4

5 Horsepower exhibition to gather material for their diary entry, and have the opportunity to try on uniform worn by First World War soldiers. Letters Home: Voices from the front Key Stage: 2/3 Curriculum: History, English Using the Museum s reconstructed trench system and objects from the handling collection to set the scene, students are introduced to the concept of soldier s letters from the trenches of the First World War. Letters from the Museum collection form the basis of a study of soldiers in the trenches writing home about their experiences, introducing the subject of morale and censorship, both at the front and at home. Students will use what they discover to write a letter as if they were a soldier writing from the Western Front. A First World War Christmas Interactive tour and workshop Key Stage: 2/3/4 Curriculum: History, Drama, Art What was Christmas like for soldiers in the trenches? This workshop uses drama and the Museum s reconstructed trench system to explore Christmas on the Western Front and the Christmas truce of There is the opportunity to get into character by trying on soldier s uniform, kit and equipment. Pupils will use artefacts from the Museum s collection to discover how soldiers communicated with home at Christmas time and create their own First World War Christmas card. Remembrance Key Stage: Reception/1/2/3/4 Curriculum: History, Citizenship The Tank Museum exists to commemorate the soldiers of the Royal Armoured Corps. In this workshop, students will explore why we remember those who have given their lives in service of their country, using vehicles and artefacts in the Museum s collection. The session will focus on the personal stories and experiences of soldiers, and can be adapted according to the period in history you are studying. It can also enhance a local history study by focussing on soldiers from Dorset. We can include a craft session in which pupils can make a poppy to take away with them. 5

6 The Second World War Britain in the Second World War Topic: History, the Blitz Dealing with the Blitz and organisations such as the Home Guard, ARP and Women s Land Army, in this workshop pupils will explore from the Museum s extensive handling collection. Children can try on a range of gas masks, helmets and uniforms. A particular favourite is the hand-cranked air raid siren - very loud! The 1940s House Topic: History, Battle of Britain, The Blitz Explore what life was like at home in the Second World War inside a reconstructed 1940 s house and experience a real air raid in an Anderson shelter. The Second World War Key Stage: 2/3 Curriculum: History, Citizenship In this workshop pupils will explore mystery objects to discover the impact the Second World War had on Britain, the wider world and the soldiers that fought in the conflict. It highlights how Hitler sought to spread Nazi ideology through the creation of the Hitler Youth, and what the implications of this might be for children and young people today. D-Day Key Stage: 2/3 Curriculum: History 6

7 Why did the Allies launch an invasion of France in 1944? Pupils will see the unique vehicles that were used during the beach landing, discover how the Allies hid the invasion from Nazi Germany and learn how the Allies made a 28 ton Sherman tank float. 7

8 The Cold War and modern warfare Modern warfare (including the chance to get inside an armoured vehicle) Interactive tour Key Stage: R/1/2/3/4 Curriculum: Science, history, citizenship This workshop explores how soldier s fought and lived on operations from the Cold War to the modern day. Students will get inside an FV432 armoured personnel carrier and find out how it was used in combat. They will investigate a British soldier s experiences in Afghanistan, including how they eat, sleep and live, in our exhibition Battlegroup Afghanistan. They ll also find out more about the science behind the highly specialised vehicles used in the conflict. This workshop can be adapted according to the age of the students and the focus on study, call us to discuss your requirements. The Cold War Key stage 3/4 Curriculum: History, science In this workshop pupils will explore the causes of the Cold War and the implications of the conflict, through handling artefacts from the period. There is also the opportunity to get inside a real Cold War warrior, the Chieftain tank. 8

9 The Tank Story Interactive tour Key Stage: 2/3/4/ and HE Curriculum: History, Science Discover the story of the tank in this lively tour of the Museum s Tank Story exhibition. Students will explore how warfare has shaped the 20 th Century and how technology developed during this period. The tour begins with the world s first tank Little Willie, created in 1915, and ends with Challenger 2, currently in service with the British Army. It can be adapted to focus on the period you are studying in the classroom. 9

10 Reception and Key Stage 1 Nature s Army Key Stage: R/1/2 Curriculum: Science This workshop looks at the similarities between the habitats, movements, camouflage and armour used by insects and army soldiers alike. Students will have an opportunity to dress up in camouflage uniform, investigate materials used for armour and learn how to march like a soldier. Using the Museum s collection of tanks and exhibitions, pupils will discover what it is like to be a modern day soldier and how they take inspiration from nature s army. 10
