3 The Town of Wakefield its residential refuse collection and curbside recycling programs refuse collection: The refuse collection program has changed from a conventional collection method to an automated refuse collection method. This automated system uses a special truck, equipped with a mechanical/robotic arm that automatically lifts and empties special trash containers. This system is being implemented to reduce trash, increase recycling, improve operations, improve the environment, reduce the cost of refuse collection and disposal, and provide for a clean community. containers: The automated refuse collection program will provide residents with a free refuse container that will be used with the automated refuse collection operation. Each single-family household with municipal trash collection will receive one refuse container from the Town of Wakefield. Legal 2, 3, and 4-family households that currently receive Town refuse collection will receive one container for each legal unit. All containers will be the property of the Town of Wakefield and must be left at the place of residence upon change of ownership/tenancy. Each container has a serial number that allows tracking if the container is lost or stolen. A record will be maintained by the DPW with the name and address associated with each container. Each refuse container can hold a substantial amount of trash. Residents can buy special event bags at a cost of 5 (five) bags for $10 if they anticipate a large amount of trash after a barbecue, holiday or party. An additional container is available for rent annually if your refuse is traditionally excessive. Residents are encouraged to try the program before renting an additional container or purchasing overflow bags. container size and instructions: The containers have wheels, are stable and can be easily moved.
