Name of problem Introduce US Robotics modem and specify supported modems for Communication Manager and SIP Enablement Services Products affected Communication Manager (CM), Releases 4.0.3, 4.0.4, 4.0.5, 5.0, 5.1.x and 5.2.x SIP Enablement Services (SES), Releases 4.0.x, 5.0, 5.1.x and 5.2.x Servers: S8300, S8400, S8500, S8510, S8700, S8710, S8720, S8730, and S8800 Problem description The S8xx0 Servers use a modem for remote access and alarming. Starting in August 2009 Avaya began shipping the US Robotics USR5637-OEM modem (cc ) with new sales of CM5.2 and SES 5.2. Over time Avaya has shipped three different modems with S8xx0 Serves running CM and SES, and this PSN specifies which modems are supported in the various releases of these products along with the required software and firmware versions. Failure to update the software and firmware per this PSN could result in an inoperable modem. Note that modems are also used with Avaya H.248 Branch Gateways (G250, G350, G430 and G450) in the Standard Local Survivability (SLS) mode where no S8300 server is installed. See PSN 2475U for modems supported with SLS Branch Gateways. Resolution Modem Availability In August 2009, the US Robotics USR5637-OEM modem (cc ) began shipping with new sales of CM 5.2 and greater and SES 5.2 and greater. Two MultiTech modem models are also supported by CM and SES. These three modems are detailed in Table 1 below. In this PSN, the Old MultiTech refers to the modem that was used by CM, SES and their Servers prior to August 2008 and is now discontinued. The New MultiTech is the modem that started shipping in August 2008, and the USR Modem is the US Robotics modem that began shipping in August Table 1. Note that all modems are forward but not backward compatible. In other words if a server using an older supported modem can be upgraded to a later CM or SES release then the modem is still supported with the server and the later release. This also means that an older supported modem can usually be configured on a newer server running a later release of CM or SES as long as a modem is a supported option for system access and alarming. One exception to this rule is S8800 which ONLY supports the USR Modem ( ) when running CM or SES Note also that modems are not supported with CM 6.0 and greater even though S8300D, S8510 and S8800 servers can be upgraded to CM 6.0. The Old MultiTech and New MultiTech modems will continue to be used for older releases of CM and SES. Avaya is holding stock of both MultiTech modems as maintenance spares for these releases, and the repair strategy is to replace like for like modems in the field.

Minimum Supported Software Releases and Service Pack (if required) The minimum CM and SES releases and service pack (if required) that support the given modem. Since the modems are forward compatible all releases subsequent to the minimum releases also support the given modem. Minimum Required MPC/SAMP FW for S8400/S85xx servers The MPC or SAMP maintenance board is the interface between the server and the modem for S8400 and S8500 Series Servers. The S8400 uses MPC firmware (FW) while the S8500 Series Servers use SAMP FW. The minimum MPC/SAMP FW required for each CM or SES release is specified at if not included in Table 2. Note that the R2.2.3 and greater MPC/SAMP FW versions used in recent releases are backward compatible with all supported modems. See the section below for more information on MPC/SAMP FW. Supported Servers Generally, all servers supported by a particular release support the indicated modem with the exception of CM 5.0. In addition, the S8800 server ONLY supports the USR Modem ( ) when running CM 5.2.1, or SES Table 2. The firmware is located in the Download Center under the appropriate Server downloads, and CM Release downloads. For SES, the SAMP firmware is available for each of the supported releases as follows. SES 4.0 The SAMP FW is available as part of SES 4.0 Service Pack 3 and can be downloaded from SES 5.0 The SAMP FW is available as part of SES 5.0 Service Pack 4a and can be downloaded from SES 5.1 The SAMP FW is available as part of the Launch Release of SES 5.1, and SES 5.2 The SAMP FW is available as part of the Launch Release of SES 5.2 and SAMP FW is equivalent to SAMP FW with the addtion of a minor bug fix. 3 For additional information on SAMP / MPC firmware for CM see PSN For additional information on SAMP firmware for SES see PSN Communication Manager and SIP Enablement Services Software Failure to apply the required CM and SES service packs, as described in the System Requirements section could result in an inoperable modem. The latest service packs and their release notes can be found at. The software is located in the Download Center under the appropriate CM and SES Release downloads. MultiTech and US Robotics Modem Firmware appropriate MultiTech and US Robotics modem firmware will be installed before shipping to customers. Distinguishing Modem Types The easiest way to distinguish the New MultiTech from the Old MultiTech is to look on the bottom of the modem for the Model numbers given in Table 1. Additionally, the faceplate for the New MultiTech modem says MultiModem ZBA V2, whereas the Old MultiTech modem says MultiModem USB. ZBA Old MultiTech V2 New MultiTech 2010 Avaya Inc. 4 The USR modem appearance is completely different from the MultiTech modems: The version of the USR modem for Avaya products can be distinguished by the following attributes as pictured below: 1.
