General Information Credits: 3 Human biology course for non-scientists with little background in Biology NOTE: Students registered in a Biology or Biochemistry program may not take this course for credit. Students who have completed Cegep Biology 921/931 may not take this course for credit. Course Description A series of lectures to provide non-biologists with a general survey of the fundamental principles of life, with special emphasis on the structures and functions of human beings. Lectures only. Topics covered: Shuster Reading Phelan Reading 1. Process of Science Chapter 1 2. Chemistry and Cells Chapter 2/3 3. Nutrition and Dietary energy Chapter 4/6 4. Cell Division and Stem cells Chapter 9/13 5. Physiology Chapter 25 Chapter Digestive system Chapter 26 Chapter , Circulation and Respiration - Chapter 21.1, , 21.12, 21.14, 21.16, Central nervous system Chapter 27 Chapter , Hormones - Chapter Reproductive Chapter 28 Chapter 25.1, 25.4, Immune system Chapter 29 Chapter 26 This material will be used in in-class and in online learning activities. Students are expected to participate fully in all activities. Please inform the instructor at the beginning of the term of any difficulties, physical or learning disabilities that you may have or as soon as possible in the case of an injury, so that you can be accommodated. How to do well: Attend all classes, participate in all quizzes and activities, and keep up-to-date with the readings 3. Objectives 1. Acquire a broad spectrum of the basic aims of biology 2. Understand fundamentals of human physiology with respect to different organ systems. 3. Become comfortable discussing concepts in human biology with audiences.
3 4. Course Material PowerPoint slides from the lectures, reading lists and questions for the various topics will be posted on course Moodle in order to improve your understanding of the material. For certain topics, multiple readings are provided to give different coverage of more complex topics. Text: Custom edition Shuster 2012, Scientific American Biology for the Changing World w/physiology and Phelan 2013, What is Life? Physiology sections. Freeman Publishing Lectures will be posted on Moodle. Usage of i-clickers The i>clicker system will be used during lectures. If you don t have one, please purchase at the University bookstore. You need to bring your own i>clicker to lectures in order to participate in the quizzes. Also, you need to register your i>clicker at My Concordia Portal. Please follow the direction posted on Moodle. 5. Grading: The majority of marks in this course will be based on the final examination, midterm, in-class activity and presentation. Final grades will be determined from the cumulative exam score determined from the following weightings; Evaluation: Midterm 30% In-class Activities 12% i>clicker 3% (1% attendance+2% correct answer) Final exam 55% Final exam will be held in the time slot scheduled by the University. Students with a valid reason for rescheduling the final exam must go through the examination office. Exams will cover material presented in lectures and from the assigned readings. Questions will be both in the form of multiple-choice and short answer types. Bring your pencils, markers, pens and erasers. Use of electronic devices of any kind (calculators, electronic dictionaries, and especially cell phones) is not allowed. Final exam will cover the entire course (cumulative) There are no make-up exams or quizzes. If you miss the midterm exam on account of a genuine reason for which you can provide a medical note, then the final exam will count for more.
4 The following scheme will be used to translate the numbers to letter grades; Grade Percentage A % A 85-90% A % B % B 73-77% B % C % C 63-67% C % D % D 53-57% D % F 40-50% R 0-40% In the event of extraordinary circumstances beyond the University's control, the content and/or evaluation scheme in this course is subject to change. 6. Rights and Responsibilities: Plagiarism: The most common offense under the Academic Code of Conduct is plagiarism, which the Code defines as the presentation of the work of another person as one s own or without proper acknowledgement. This could be material copied word for word from books, journals, Internet sites, professor s course notes, etc. It could be material that is paraphrased but closely resembles the original source. It could be the work of a fellow student, for example, an answer on a quiz, data for a lab report, a paper or assignment completed by another student. It might be a paper purchased through one of the many available sources. Plagiarism does not refer to words alone it can also refer to copying images, graphs, tables, and ideas. Presentation is not limited to written work. It also includes oral presentations, computer assignments and artistic works. Finally, if you translate the work of another person into French or English and do not cite the source, this is also plagiarism.
