2 Section A: Main Elements of the Duties of Nursery Nurse Intermediate Apprentice Reports to: Responsible for: Contract Dates: Nursery Management Team The welfare of children within the age group 12 months from start date. Organisational Context: YMCA Fairthorne Group is a community based charity with a serious ambition to grow our already successful social enterprise model. Our mission is to champion and add value to young lives by providing experiences that challenge, enable and develop the individual. We deliver services and programmes in youth and children s work from 8 different venues, as well as in schools and community venues across Southampton, Hampshire, Portsmouth, the Isle of Wight and Dorset. Fairthorne Manor Nursery (SO30 2GH) is a popular and friendly 129 place nursery offering places for children aged 4months to 5 years. The Nursery is set within 111 acres of parkland and woodland, offering a play-based curriculum both within the nursery and the grounds of Fairthorne Manor. Outdoor activities include pond dipping, dam building, boat trips, forest walks, fire building, obstacle course, sound walks and picnics. YMCA Nursery Whale Island (PO2 8ER) is situated on HMS Excellent. We offer nursery places to children aged 4 months-5 years. The nursery has three nursery rooms that provide exciting and inspiring activities to all children. We have with two large outside areas which reflects the curriculum. We also have access to the grounds of HMS Excellent where children can explore naval history, ships, boats, rose garden, nature and much more. Our Townhill Southampton Nursery (SO18 2FG) has recently been rated as Outstanding by Ofsted, delivering childcare of the highest standards to the local community. The experienced staff team understand the importance of play-based learning, healthy eating and time spent playing outside. Located in a purpose built building within the grounds of Townhill Infant School and in partnership with SureStart, Townhill Infant School and Southampton City Council provides the very best in Pre-School (3-5 years) facilities and Day Care Provision. YMCA Nursery Newtown (SO14 0EL) is a 30 place preschool open for children accessing 2 and 3 year old funding. It is based next to Newtown Infant School and Pre-school and also next to an adventure playground. The nursery is fully equipped with a large outside area and access straight into the adventure playground. The setting has one large room which is bright and welcoming. This setting has a very diverse community, with varying needs.

3 Job Purpose To work as part of the nursery team who are dedicated to the holistic development of each child. Main Duties and Responsibilities Work as part of a team to provide high quality nursery care to individual children which promotes their physical and emotional welfare, manages their health and safety appropriately and provides for their individual routine. Report areas of concern as necessary. Ensure that the development of each child is recognised, recorded and shared appropriately with parents and colleagues. Assist the management team to plan a diverse curriculum that utilises the resources available on site. Ensure that all-relevant childcare routines, policies and procedures are adhered to. Attend weekly classroom tuition on nursery care, based on site at Fairthorne Manor, as part of the Level 2 Apprenticeship programme and to attend additional training sessions as required. To travel and work at other nursery settings within the Fairthorne Group as appropriate and to gain wider experience. To act in the interests of your own safety & the safety of others at all times. Anything else reasonably requested by the management of the organisation. Section B: Person Specification & Key Competencies A genuine enthusiasm for childcare and the wider work of the organisation. Ability to motivate self and others. Ability and willingness to relate positively to Children, Parents and Staff. Willingness to learn new skills and undergo training. As this post involves working with children, all applicants must be aged 16 years or older Eligibility Criteria for Childcare Qualification at Level 2 (Please note if you do not meet the criteria for this qualification, you can still apply for the position) Learners are not eligible for funding if: the learner has achieved a full degree the learner is on a university break (gap year) the learner comes from outside the EU the learner has not been living within an EU country for last three years the learner has obtained a higher education qualification at level 4 or above as defined on the National Qualifications Framework (NCF) or Qualifications Credit

4 Framework (QCF) including being awarded a first degree by a university the learner has previously achieved the same level 2 qualification the learner has previously achieved a NVQ level 3 in any vocational area the learner is attending any further/higher education institute Section C: Terms and Conditions This position will be subject to the normal terms and conditions for working within the YMCA 1. Salary: Annual salary 5,226 to be paid directly into your bank account, monthly in arrears. 2. Hours of Work: This post would be a full time post consisting of 37.5 hours per week to be worked on a shift system between the hours of 07:15 and 18:15. There will be a requirement for occasional evening and weekend working, for which time off in lieu will be given. 3. Holiday: On commencement of employment your annual entitlement will be 20 days plus statutory holidays. 4. Probation Period: Up to 12 months probation period. 5. Period of Notice offered and required: 1 week both ways during your first month of employment and thereafter 1 month notice both ways. 6. Condition of Employment: Satisfactory Enhanced DBS disclosure, Health Declaration, Declaration of Criminal Background and references. MOD Security Check - for Whale Island only. All posts are subject to YMCA Fairthorne Group s Terms and Conditions of Employment. 7. In Service Training: This post constitutes an apprenticeship level 2 childcare training programme. As a result, we offer full and comprehensive training in all elements of nursery care. This involves formal classroom tuition, as well as on the job training and some experience at our other nursery settings. Combined with work experience, this should secure you an NVQ 2 in Children and Young peoples Workforce, as well as a Level 2 certificate in food safety, L2 Paediatric First Aid and a Employment Rights Responsibility (ERR) award. During the first few weeks at the setting you will be given an induction to the Centre 7.1 Learning Agreement: All training costs will be covered by YMCA Fairthorne Group, including some governing body qualifications. If you choose to leave employment at YMCA Fairthorne Manor before your end of

5 contract date you will be required to refund a percentage of your training costs. If you leave within 3 months of the end of your initial training period( you will be notified in writing when your initial training period is completed) you will be required to refund YMCA Fairthorne Group 100% of your training costs. After successfully completing 3 months of employment after the end of your initial training period, if you choose to leave before the end of your contract end date you will be required to refund YMCA Fairthorne Group 70% of your training costs. 7.2 Certificates: Certificates will be awarded for all completed training 7.3 Training Costs: The approximate cost of training, per person, is a minimum of 1, Location of employment: This role is primarily based either at Whale Island (PO2 8ER), Fairthorne Manor (SO30 2GH), Townhill (SO18 2FG) or Newtown (SO14 0EL) and may work occasional at any of our other sites.

Policy Purpose The policy has been produced to ensure that all information regarding the safety and wellbeing of a child or young person is acted upon appropriately. The policy (when shared) ensures that all staff and volunteers clearly understand their own responsibilities and where to access guidance and support. The policy relates to children and young people within our direct care or those within the communities in which we work. Definitions Child Child Protection Safeguarding A child is anyone who has not yet reached their 18th birthday. Over 18yrs see vulnerable adult policy. Actions taken and documented by YMCA Fairthorne Group in response to a concern about a child, young person and/or their family. Actions taken by YMCA Fairthorne Group to ensure the wellbeing of children and young people whilst in our care. National Legislative Responsibilities The Children Act 2004 dictates the legislative framework to which YMCA Fairthorne Group will comply. This is expressed in the Stay Safe outcome of the Every Child Matters Change for Children programme. Local Accountability YMCA Fairthorne Group works within the guidelines and procedural requirements of the Hampshire, Dorset, Isle of Wight, Portsmouth and Southampton Local Area Safeguarding Children Boards. Global Perspective YMCA Fairthorne Group supports the practical application of the United Nations Convention of the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) in all relevant aspects of our work. 7 VULNERABLE ADULTS PROTECTION POLICY Introduction Within the scope of the activities that YMCA Fairthorne Group offers to the community, it remains paramount that it looks to the welfare of all users of its facilities. Whilst a major focus of the work of the group is with children and young people aged up to 18 as the group widens its remit it is increasingly common that it will come into contact with vulnerable adults both directly and indirectly. YMCA Fairthorne Group recognises that it is the responsibility of the organisation to prevent the physical, sexual and emotional abuse of vulnerable adults and/or their neglect. Each individual employee, volunteer or board member shares this responsibility. Therefore we are committed to implementing, maintaining and the regular review of our Protection and Safeguarding policies and procedures for children, young people and vulnerable adults. Definitions Vulnerable Adults A vulnerable adult is defined by YMCA Fairthorne Group as someone over the age of 18 who is or may be in need by reason of mental or other disability, age or illness and who is or may be unable to take care of him/herself or unable to protect him/herself against harm or exploitation. For Young People aged under 18, the procedures and policy as detailed in the YMCA Fairthorne Group Child Protection Policy should be followed. Vulnerable Adult Protection Actions taken and documented by YMCA Fairthorne Group in response to a concern about a vulnerable adult or their family. Safeguarding Actions taken by YMCA Fairthorne Group to ensure the wellbeing of children, young people and vulnerable adults whilst in our care.
