3 Details Of Check Is BAEP 1521 avalable and at the correct issue. Does an internal procedure exist and what is its reference/issue status. Is the operation for zinc plating incorporated into the planning. Are history cards available and fully endorsed. Are the ratio's of the baths as follows for zinc : cyanide : NaOH 1) matt 1 : : or 2) bright 1 : : Is the typical bath composition as follows: 1) Zinc : 25-50g/l 2) Total Cyanide : g/l 3) NaOH : 40-80g/l 4) Temp : C 5) Current density vat Am 2 or barrel Am 2 Are all parts free of paint and degreased to BAEP 9049, 9053 or 9069 prior to plating. 4 Details Of Check Result / Remarks Action Required Alternatively for steels upto 1200 MPa are the parts pickled iaw BAEP 9205 and for steels upto 1451 MPa alkaline derusted to BAEP 9206 (parts nay also be blasted to BAEP 2002, 2003, 2004 or 2007 if acceptable to Design.) If the parts are above 1451 MPa are they stress relieved iaw BAEP 9009 followed by cleaning to BAEP 9048 or blasting to BAEP 2002, 2003, 2004 or If the parts are above 1800 MPa are they cleaned to BAEP 9206 or blasted as above. For corrosion resisting steel have they been nickle striked to BAEP For copper based materials have they been cleaned iaw BAEP9016 followed by nickle strike. If they is a delay between the cleaning prcess and plating operation are the parts stored in an anti-oxidant solution of 6 g/l NaCN. After plating are the parts cleaned immediately in clean cold water. After rinsing and parts that require deembrittlement are they rinsed in 5% chronic acid solution at not less than 60 C for seconds followed by rinsing. HBQSC/QA/SC170(M).XLS Issue 1 4

5 Has chemical stripping been carried out on any of the parts. If so have tne parts been re debrittled for not less than ½ the above times quoted. - parts above 1451 MPa cannot be replated without Design approval. Have the parts any carburised areas that would suffer a reduction in hardness. If so have they been heated at C for not less than 6 hours. Details Of Check Result / Remarks Action Required Are the parts de-embrittled as follows: 1) MPa C for 4 hours 2) MPa C for 18 hours 3) Above 1800 MPa C for 24 hours Are all ferromagnetic steel parts flaw detected to BAEP 2502 before or after persivation. Are all other material flaw detected to BAEP 2501 prior to plating. Are all parts then chrome passivated to BAEP 1516 Is the pre-passivation coating a bluish -white colourisation and unform with no evidence of burns, blisters. If processed via the vat method is a sample of 2 parts from each load taken and tested for adhesion and thickness. HBQSC/QA/SC170(M).XLS Issue 1 5

6 Is a small area of the plated surface rubbed with steel 6mm diameter rod with a hemispherical end for about 15 seconds with no indication of the plating becoming blistered or detached. Details Of Check Result / Remarks Action Required If processed via the barrel method are 10 parts taken minimum from a group of 100 (if less than 100 then 2 parts taken) and tested as above. How is the thickness of the coating determined and is the item used calibrated, Are random checks for freedom of mercury in the deposit carried out as determined by the Quality Manager.
