Homework Problems Name Team Name Team Complete? Team Did Not Agree On Questions # s Quick Look Today we learned to convert units of different measure. Because conversions rate are a type of rate, find an equivalent rate that has the value you are converting to. Here are some examples! 1) There are 4 quarts in 1 gallon. How many quarts are in 6 gallons? 4 quarts 6 = 1gallon 24 quarts 6 gallons 2) There are 24 quarts in 6 gallons. How many gallons are in 53 quarts? Quart(s) Gallon(s) First find the number of gallons in 1 quart, and then multiply by 53. 3) Sophie s GPS measured the distance of her trip. On one setting it said, and on another setting it said 5.4 miles. If both measures represent the same distance, how many miles are in 1 kilometer? 5.4 miles = 0.62 miles We found the unit rate or conversion rate. We know there are about 0.62 miles in 1 kilometer Success for All Foundation Homework Problems 1
Directions for questions 1 9: Solve. 1) There are kilometers in 1 mile. How many kilometers are there in 12.5 miles? 2) There are 3 feet in 1 yard. How many yards are in 496 feet? 3) There are inches in 1 meter. How many inches are in 2.5 meters? 4) 1 kilogram is the same as 1,000 grams. How many kilograms are equal to 2,036 grams? 5) Sandra measured the liquid in the tub and measured 122 pints. Juan measured the same liquid and got gallons. If both measures represent the same volume, how many pints are in a gallon? 6) There are tons in 1 pound. How many pounds are in 4.5 tons? 7) Aya measured the height of the plant as 100 centimeters. Andre measured the height as 3.28 feet. If both measures represent the same length, how many centimeters are in 1 foot? 8) There are 48 teaspoons in 1 cup. How many teaspoons are in cups? 9) One scale measures the weight of the flour at 40 ounces. Another scale measures 2.5 pounds. If both measures represent the same weight, how many ounces are in a pound? Success for All Foundation Homework Problems
Mixed Practice 10) There are 4 cars in the parking lot with two doors. There are 12 cars in the parking lot with four doors. Write a ratio in simplest form in three ways to describe the ratio of cars with two doors to the total number of cars in the parking lot. 11) Natalie paid $1.80 for 6 ounces of cereal. How much did Natalie pay per ounce for her cereal? 12) Divide = ) Gillian s restaurant makes gallons of fruit punch for their lunch hour. Each gallon of fruit punch has cups of kiwi juice in it. About how much kiwi juice did Gillian s restaurant use to create the fruit punch? Word Problem 14) Anya measured her suitcase on a scale. On one setting it said weighed 32.6 pounds and on another setting it weighed 14.8 kilograms. If both measures represent the same weight, how many kilograms are in 1 pound? 2012 Success for All Foundation Homework Problems 3
For the Guide on the Side Today your student learned to convert units of different measures. We can use what we know about rates to convert units of different measures or to find the conversion rate when given 2 equivalent measures. Conversions can be written as rates ( 12 inches = 12 inches in 1 foot). We can then find the equivalent 1foot rate that has the value we are converting to. Your student should be able to answer these questions about converting units. 1) Will you have more or less units after you convert? How do you know? 2) What do you estimate the answer to be? Why? 3) What place value will you round your answer to? Why? Here are some ideas to work with conversions with your student. 1) Find the exchange rate for the currency of another country. Determine the cost of different items that are sold in dollars for someone who uses a different currency. 2) Select an item from your pantry that has its volume or weight listed in two different measurements. Use that information to find the conversion rate between those two units. 3) Use Khan Academy to review converting measurements: Success for All Foundation Homework Problems
Homework Answers 1) There are kilometers in 12.5 miles. 2) There are yards in 496 feet. 3) There are inches in 2.5 meters. 4) There are kilograms in 2,036 grams. 5) There are 8 pints in 1 gallon. 6) There are 9,000 pounds in 4.5 tons. 7) There are centimeters in 1 foot. 8) There is teaspoons in 2 cups ) There are 16 ounces in 1 pound. Mixed Practice 10) 1 to 4, 1:4, ) $0.30 per ounce or 5 12) 36 $ ounce 13) Gillian s restaurant used about 40 cups of kiwi juice to make the fruit punch. Word Problem 14) There are 0.45 kilograms in 1 pound. Possible explanation: 14.8 kilograms per 31.6 pounds is a rate. To find the unit rate for 1 pound, I divided both 14.8 kilograms and 31.6 pounds by Success for All Foundation Homework Problems 5
