1 Healthy Snacking: Dialysis & Diabetes Friendly Snacks Snacking Tips: Between meals and bedtime snacks can be easily included in the meal plan Snacks can help ward off hunger and help to prevent low blood sugar Plan snacks 3-4 hours after a meal and count the carbohydrates in your meal plan Check your blood sugar levels regularly Carbohydrate Free Choices: Proteins 1 hard-boiled or deviled egg ¼ cup tuna, egg or chicken salad 1 small meatball (no sauce) 2 chicken wings (no sauce) Vegetables 1/2 cup asparagus or celery 1 cup cucumbers, radishes, or green beans Miscellaneous 1/2 cup sugar-free gelatin (counts as fluid) Carbohydrate Snacks: 1 Portion = 15 Grams of Carbohydrate Fruits 1 fresh apple, plum or pear 3/4 cup fresh blueberries or pineapple 1 cup raspberries 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce, pineapple or fruit cocktail cup fresh or frozen grapes 1/2 cup canned light pears or peaches Beverages & Frozen Treats (Be sure to count these toward your fluids) 1/2 cup light apple juice 1 cup grape or root beer soda 1/4 cup sherbet or sorbet 2 oz. fruit ice or popsicle 1/2 cup rice milk, unfortified 4 oz. diet lemon-lime, ginger ale, or cranberry juice

3 Sample Menu BREAKFAST: 2 scrambled eggs 1/3 cup grape juice 1 slice white toast 1 teaspoon margarine 1 cup cooked oatmeal LUNCH: SNACK: 3 ounces turkey on 2 slices of white bread Lettuce salad with dressing 15 medium grapes 4 ounces water 1 protein (ex. Glucerna if you have diabetes or Zone if you don t have diabetes) DINNER: 1 cup cubed steak and pep stir fry 2/3 cup cooked white rice 1/2 cup broccoli 1/2 cup canned peaches in own juice 8 ounces water SNACK: ½ cup egg salad 1 slice of bread The total protein in this menu is around 90 grams.

Meat, chicken, fish, pork and lamb Soy, dried beans (if canned, choose no added salt ), lentils and nuts in small portions Low sodium cheese, cottage cheese and ricotta cheese Eggs Wild game: rabbit, deer and pheasant Milk, yogurt and buttermilk Nutrition supplements such as Boost High Protein, ZonePerfect Nutrition Bars and Glucerna Protein Bars The best proteins are referred to as High Quality Proteins and are from animal sources. * Ask your dietitian for more information on protein sources.

11 Tips on Eating Well with a Low Appetite Eat frequent small meals (examples below). Eat your favorite foods often. Drink after eating, not before or during a meal. Drink high-calorie beverages, such as fortified milk, milkshakes, juices, nectars or liquid supplements like Nepro. Avoid low-calorie or diet drinks Add milk, cream, half & half, butter, sugar or honey to foods and drinks to boost calories. Make meals as relaxed and pleasant as possible. Try to eat together as a family, play music, and allow plenty of time to eat everything on the plate. Increase your physical activity every day. This will improve your appetite. Use convenience foods as snacks if unable to prepare. Some suggestions are frozen pizza rolls, chicken nuggets, instant cereals, fruit cup, fruit rolls, pudding, breakfast s, granola s, dried fruit and nuts. Sometimes a multivitamin will help improve your appetite.
