1 GUIDELINES 1. The competition is open to any currently enrolled pupils (years 0 13) in the New Zealand education system. This production can be incorporated into course curriculum, but should stand alone as a complete short film in the context of the competition. 2. Entry is free. 3. All entries must be submitted by midnight on 15 th August The People s Choice Award will be announced on World Vegetarian Day, 1 st October Submitted films should be two to five minutes long. 5. Categories: PRIMARY SCHOOL CATEGORY (years 0-6) Films may be on any aspect of vegetarianism. How you can help improve animals lives through vegetarianism/veganism Cooking a vegetarian dish in the style of a Master Chef Innovative ways to help animals used for food Your vegetarian heroes How plant based food is nutritious and delicious Vegetarians are just like everyone else, except they don t eat animals INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL CATEGORIES (years 7 8) Choose a topic from either category below: a) Ethical Aspects of using animals for food Animals in farming conditions, eg intensive farming, the processes used, etc. How you can improve an animal s life by what you buy, eg food choices, buying products that have not been tested on animals. How livestock farming is affecting our environment. Over fishing is killing our ocean. b) Nutrition and Health Vibrant health and plant power: the benefits of a vegetarian or vegan diet. The low down on a vegetarian/vegan meal, eg how it s made, what it costs, how long it takes to make. How to be healthy and strong on a plant based diet. 1

2 SECONDARY SCHOOL CATEGORIES (years 9 13) Choose a topic from any category below: a) Animal Advocacy For the animals: choosing ethical foods. Sold a lie: those animals are not happy down on the farm. The power consumers wield to improve and save animals lives. b) Protecting the Environment The impact of animal farming on the environment and how a plant based diet can improve our environment. The environmental impact of the standard NZ diet versus vegetarian/vegan diet: a comparison. Over fishing is destroying the oceans. How livestock farming is contributing to species extinctions. c) Nutrition and Health Vibrant health and plant power: the benefits of a vegetarian or vegan diet. The low down on a vegetarian/vegan meal. Busting myths about vegetarian/vegan diets. Vegetarian/vegan achievers and sports people. 6. There will be a prize for the best entry in each category. Merit prizes may be awarded at the judges discretion. The overall winner shall be chosen from the finalists in each category by public online voting and the school of the overall winner shall receive a $1000 cash prize. 7. Each school that submits three or more short films will receive a free resource pack. 8. Items to be submitted with this short film competition: Entry Form: All entrants names and contact details must be includes and legible. Reference form: All facts used in the films must be referenced and verified. Actors permission form: To be signed by all actors/people appearing in the film. Music permission form: If music is used on the film, written permission to use the music must be included with the entry form. 9. If you enter more than one film, you must fill out separate entry forms for each film. Schools and individuals may submit as many entries as they wish, as long as each is a complete stand-alone work. 10. Each film must be the work of the pupils only (although the assistance of the supervising teacher at various stages of the production is permitted and expected). Actors within the production may be any age. 2

It is the responsibility of the entrant to ensure that the file submitted meets all technical requirements: Container: AVI, MP4, MOV Codec: H.264, MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 Aspect Ratio: Native aspect ratio without letterboxing (examples: 4:3, 16:9) Resolution: 720p Audio format: MP3 or AAC preferred Frames per second: 30 Maximum file size: 1 GB 12. No films that are objectionable will be considered. The films must be suitable for general audiences. Specifically, there must be no harm to animals. 13. Each entry will be judged on the following criteria: Visual Impact Conciseness and content of message Originality, creativity, and innovation Effort Finished quality Relevant age group and experience 14. Each film must contain a title and credits. 15. By submitting the film into the competition you give the New Zealand Vegetarian Society Inc your permission to use the film in whatever way the Society deems fit. 16. Submitting your entry: 1. 7 MUSIC PERMISSION SHEET If you have used music in your film, you must get the music rights cleared. There are several options available including: Non-licensed music: compose and record music yourself, or commission someone to do it. Copyright-free music from an online source, or create your own music using a programme containing loops and samples. Example: Free Downloads of Veggie Songs: Published music which is anything you can buy in a record store, hear on the radio, or have in your own collection at home. Performing and recording your own version of public domain music. You must fill out this form for each applicable option: 1. 8 3. Copyright Music Obtaining the rights to use commercially available music can be complex and expensive, but entrants are still free to apply. To use an existing commercially-available CD or music score, you will need the consent of both the artist, by applying to APRA, and of the record company, directly, or through Phonographic Performances Limited.
