4 , Wants More Stories! Follow these simple steps for a kinetic, participatory story hour that introduces addition and allows children to playact behavior modification. What You Might Prepare One Month in Advance of the Event Locate copies of the picture books, and by Natalie Marshall (Blue Apple Books). If you are doing an event for the public, copy and display the Story Hour poster in this kit, hand it out in your community, and include it in a display. List the event in newsletters and online calendars with copy such as: s can be wild, noisy, hungry, selfish, and grumpy. Sound like anyone you know? We will be making sweet monster masks and doing a little monster math. All ages welcome, but best for ages 2-6. What You Might Prepare A Week or Two in Advance of the Event What You Might Gather: Crayons Kid-safe scissors Glue sticks Scotch tape Double-sided tape Card stock for printing Lamination for Math Posters & Pieces (optional) Activities created by Blue Apple Books for the picture books, and 4

5 , What You Might Do: Print out the Math Posters on card stock. If you have access to a laminator, you can laminate them to be used again and again and/or hung on your wall post-event. Print out the Math Pieces on card stock or regular paper. Cut out each individual piece. There are nine individual objects (cookie, balloon, apple, ball, strawberry, cracker, jelly bean, teddy bear, and lips/kiss). There is a second sheet of all lips/kiss pieces. The first child to arrive at the event will get the cookie; the second will get the apple, and so on. The ninth child, and any after him/her, will get a lips/kiss piece. Cut out as many lips/kiss pieces as you think you will need. If you have access to a laminator, you can laminate the pieces to be used again and again. Print out the two-page Mask sheet on card stock (one for each anticipated child). Take additional sheets of card stock and cut the sheet and cut the sheet lengthwise about an inch wide. These will serve as Mask extenders for monsters with bigger brains. Print out the Wants More Math sheet on regular paper (one for each anticipated child). Secure a helper to hold and change out the Math Posters as you read and to help children with Masks. Make a Mask of your own as an example for the children. What You Might Do The Day of the Event Getting Ready Put a piece of double-sided tape on the back of each of the Math Pieces. Set up a table with Mask sheets, crayons, glue sticks, Scotch tape, and kid-safe scissors. Activities created by Blue Apple Books for the picture books, and 5

6 , If you are doing an event for the public and will not have an opportunity to do a math lesson, leave the Wants More Math sheets for families to take away. The Mask sheets can also go home with families if you do not have time to do the craft! As children gather for Story Hour, stick a Math Piece on their clothing. Tell them, This is a present for some sweet monsters we are going to meet in our books today. Keep it safe until the monster in the book asks for it. You may want to give your helper the double-sided tape roll. Some children will (probably!) play with their Math Piece until the stickiness is all gone from the tape. Make sure you give out the initial eight image pieces (cookie, balloon, apple, ball, strawberry, cracker, jelly bean, and teddy bear) before you give out lips/kiss image pieces. Read Aloud Start by reading, by Natalie Marshall (Blue Apple Books). This book tells the readers on the first page that they are in charge of the monsters. If you tell them how to behave, they will listen. Every spread offers a chance for the children to tell the monsters how to behave. Invite the children to shout, Be Quiet!, Chew Your Food!, and so on. They will be empowered both to talk back to monsters and (maybe!) not to behave like monsters themselves. Have your helper come forward with the Math Posters. S/he will hold up one poster at a time starting with 1 Book. Start reading by Natalie Marshall (Blue Apple Books). On the first or second reading of the book, pause after the phrase I need one more! and ask, for example, Who has a cookie they might want to give the hungry monster? Invite the child with the cookie Math Piece to come forward. Your helper will at this point hold up the 2 Cookies Math Poster. The child can be invited to stick his/her cookie on the poster, giving the hungry monster a total of two cookies. As you turn the page to show the monster with two cookies, the 2 Cookies Math Poster will reinforce the counting/addition concept. Activities created by Blue Apple Books for the picture books, and 6

Math Poster. Family Variation: If you are doing this activity with one child or a few children, allow them to be in control of all the posters and pieces! Craft Invite the children to the craft table to make themselves into monsters. Put on your own Mask to show how they can be transformed. Take pictures of your monsters and share them on the Blue Apple Books Facebook page! We would love to see them!
