Course Description What is this course about? B110 Introduction to Psychology is a foundational course that introduces you to the systematic ways that psychologists think about behavior and mental processes. As you discover and learn the discipline of psychology, you will adopt its point of view and be able to answer the following central questions of each chapter. Essential Question Why and how do we study behavior? How does my brain work? How do we take in the world around us? How do we learn and why do we forget? How do we think and communicate? What moves our behavior? What is my personality and where does it come from? How do people view and affect one another? How does stress affect my life? How do we know when people have a psychological problem, and how can we help? How do we develop throughout our lives? Chapter 1-Introduction: Thinking Through the Themes 2-Behavioral Neuroscience 3-Sensation and Perception 4-Learning and Memory 5-Cognition: Thinking, Language, and Intelligence 6-Motivation 7-Personality 8-Social Psychology 9-Stress and Health 10- Psychological Problems, Disorders, and Treatment 11-Lifespan Development What does it mean to think like a psychologist? 12-Reflections on the Themes Course Philosophy What are the underlying principles upon which this course is based? active learning mastery distributed practice formative, corrective feedback application of concepts critical thinking in the discipline personal relevance flexibility responsibility for learning What does this mean for you? The course requirements are designed with each of these points in mind. You will be actively engaged with the course material and other students in the class. You will demonstrate mastery of concepts in 2
order to earn credit on homework, in class, and in lab. Your efforts to distribute learning instead of cramming will be rewarded. You will receive timely, if not immediate feedback on all course components, including exams, homework, critical thinking exercises, and lab exercises. You will apply course concepts to your life and your life to course concepts. You will think critically (like a behavioral scientist) about course concepts and how they are connected to the themes of the course. You will begin with what you know already, and take it from there. You will be able to choose from among a variety of course resources designed to facilitate learning; you can take exams twice; you can attend class/lab sessions with other instructors to make up for missed sessions. You are responsible for your learning; your instructor is responsible for creating a learning environment that supports all of these principles. Course Components How do I earn a grade in this course? Class Attendance/Participation Lab Attendance/Participation Online Homework Exams Final Reflection 44 pts. 66 pts. 52 pts. 400 pts. 100 pts. Grade Percent Points Grade Percent Points A+ >100% >682 C+ 77% 522 A 93% 631 C 73% 495 A- 90% 611 C- 70% 474 B+ 87% 590 D+ 67% 454 B 83% 563 D 60% 406 B- 80% 543 F <60% <406 Research Participation 20 pts. TOTAL 682 pts. Homework 8% Lab Participation 10% Final Reflection 15% Class Participation 6% Research Participation 3% Exams 58% Course Components What does each component consist of? Class Attendance/Participation 4 points each (44 pts. required, 48 pts. possible) 6% of final grade Class sessions are designed to introduce and explore the chapter s essential question and connect the question to the themes of the course and fundamental and powerful concepts of the chapter. Class sessions include a Critical Thinking Exercise that requires you to demonstrate your understanding of course concepts. You will earn 1 point for attending class sessions. An additional 3 points are available based on the quality of your response to the Critical Thinking Exercise (1, acceptable; 2, good; 3, excellent). As your presence is required to complete the exercise for the day, no late or makeup exercises are available. How Class Points Are Earned Attendance Points Critical Thinking Exercise Points present 1 acceptable 1 absent 0 good 2 excellent 3 3
Lab 6 points each (66 pts. required, 72 pts. possible) 10% of final grade Lab sessions are designed to apply concepts to life (and life to psychology). You will typically participate in a small group Laboratory Exercise, the goal of which is to develop a deeper understanding of course vocabulary by connecting them to themes, essential questions, and fundamental and powerful concepts of the course. Students will earn 1 point for attending lab sessions and 2 additional points if all homework is completed before the lab session begins. Up to 3 additional points are available based on the quality of your work on the Lab Exercise (1, acceptable; 2, good; 3, excellent). As your presence is required to complete the exercise for the day, no late or makeup exercises are available. How Lab Points Are Earned Attendance Points Homework Points Lab Exercise Points present 1 completed at mastery level before class 2 acceptable 1 absent 0 incomplete or below master level 0 good 2 excellent 3 Non-attendance: There are 12 Class Sessions and 12 Lab Sessions during the semester. Thus, you may miss one Class Session and one Lab Session without any formal penalty (though it is certainly in your best interest to attend every session). If you attend every session, the additional points you earn will count toward your extra credit point total (see details below). Homework 1 point each (52 pts. required) 8% of final grade Homework exercises are designed to provide you with practice and immediate feedback regarding your basic knowledge of the fundamental and powerful concepts and vocabulary of the course. Each section of the textbook has three homework exercises that can earn points in your B110 gradebook. Your score on each exercise must be at or above 90% in order to earn one point. Compare & Connect: You will match a definition with its corresponding concept. This exercise also allows you to see how each concept is related to other concepts in the chapter. Flowcharts: You will identify and define the fundamental and powerful concepts and vocabulary terms connected to the essential questions posed in each chapter. Applying Psychology: You will connect a real-life situation with relevant chapter concepts. Each chapter has between 4 and 6 sections. You must complete one homework exercise per section for each chapter; thus for some chapters only 4 exercises are required, for others you must complete 5 or 6. For each chapter, you must complete at least one of each exercise (i.e., you must complete at least one Compare & Connect, one Flowchart, and one Applying Psychology exercise). Homework exercises should be completed before the Lab Session in order to earn Lab Session points. Additional exercises may be completed for extra review and will continue to earn points until the close of that exam unit (e.g., Chapter 2 and 3 homework exercises will still earn points until Exam 1 closes). 4
Exams 100 points each (400 pts. possible) 58% of final grade Each exam covers two chapters of material and consists of 53 multiple choice questions worth 2 points each. Although 106 points are possible on each exam, your score is taken out of 100 points. Exams are computerized and taken in the Psychology Testing Center in SL 070. You must have your Jagtag with you to gain access to an exam. You may take each exam twice, and your highest score will be recorded in the gradebook. However, there will be a 12-hour wait between attempts. If you make a mistake, for example, accidentally closing an exam, this is considered one of your attempts. The lowest of the five exam scores will be dropped automatically. There are no make up exams for any reason. Testing Center SL 070 (basement of SL Building) Phone: Psychology Testing Hours Monday through Thursday, 10-8 Friday and Saturday, 10-5 Sunday, noon-5 Final Reflection 100 points 15% of final grade At the end of the semester you will submit a written reflection that asks you to assess how your thinking has changed from the beginning of the course to the end. You will be asked to consider the themes and essential questions of the course and discuss the extent and depth to which you have applied the themes of the course to your life and the lives of others. As a part of the project you will be asked to consider answers you will have submitted through Critical Thinking Exercises throughout the semester. Thus, it is important that you attend Class Sessions regularly and keep copies of the exercises once they have been graded and returned to you. More details on this assignment will be available later in the semester. Research Requirement 20 points 3% of final grade The Psychology Department at IUPUI, like psychology departments at most major universities, believes that exposure to research is important in the academic experience of every introductory psychology student whether or not the student pursues a psychology major. Such exposure serves several important purposes. It gives students direct experience with the research methods discussed in Introductory Psychology and provides a preview of the methods used in more advanced psychology courses It supplements students understanding of human behavior through experiential learning It provides a gateway to future student involvement in research something viewed positively by both graduate school committees and future employers. The Psychology Department therefore requires all Introductory Psychology students to complete a research participation requirement. Satisfying the requirement by completing 3 units of research participation will earn you 20 course points. Partial participation does not earn partial points. All 3 units must be completed by Friday, November 30 in order to fulfill the requirement and earn 20 points. Details on ways to satisfy the requirement are available on the B110 homepage and on a separate handout provided in class. 5
Extra Credit 20 point maximum (potential to raise your grade 1/3 letter grade, e.g., from a B+ to an A-) There are a variety of ways to earn extra credit throughout the semester. 1. Points earned over the required 44 in Class Sessions 2. Points earned over the required 66 in Lab Sessions 3. Points earned over the required 52 on Homework exercises (up to a max of 70 points) 4. Visiting the Psychology Resource Center. Participation in a 30-minute B110 study session with an Undergraduate Teaching Assistant will earn 1 point. You must have your Jagtag and sign in to earn your point. University Policies Administrative Withdrawal If you miss more than half of scheduled class/lab sessions within the first 4 weeks of the semester without contacting me, you may be administratively withdrawn from this course. CAPS Counseling and Psychological Services During the semester, if you find that life stressors are interfering with your academic or personal success, consider contacting Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). All IUPUI students are eligible for counseling services at minimal fees. CAPS also performs evaluations for learning disorders and ADHD; fees are charged for testing. CAPS is located at 719 Indiana Avenue on the second floor of Walker Plaza. They can be contacted by phone ( ). For more information, see the CAPS website at: Documented Disability The Office of Adaptive Educational Services helps students with disabilities receive appropriate accommodations from the university and their professors. Students need to register with the AES office in order to officially receive such services. For information, call or log on to Academic Integrity Academic misconduct of any form will not be tolerated. According to the Student Code of Conduct, academic misconduct may result in an F for the course. At the very least, it will result in a zero for the assignment, and your case will be reported in writing to the Chair of the Psychology Department as well as to the Dean of Students. Academic misconduct includes cheating (e.g., using unauthorized assistance, having another person take your exam or complete your homework, altering grades); fabrication (e.g., falsifying information); plagiarism (e.g., quoting without proper citation, paraphrasing another s ideas or construction); interference (e.g., bribery or threats); facilitation (e.g., helping another person cheat); and violating course policies.
