For descriptions of units, please click on the unit code or refer to the ACU Handbook 2. Teaching in Catholic, Government and Independent Schools One of the following sequences must be chosen: Preservice teachers seeking employment in Catholic primary schools Pre-service teachers seeking employment in Catholic primary schools are expected to be able to teach Religious Education. Students who wish to teach in Catholic schools are advised to ascertain the accreditation requirements of Catholic Education Offices in their respective diocese in order to make an appropriate choice. OR Typically, you are required to complete the following units (two Religious Education units, three Theology units and one University Core Curriculum unit). THBS100 Introduction to the Bible THCT100 What Christians Believe THCT202 Christian Ritual, Symbol and Sacrament EDRE101 Religious Education 1 EDRE102 Religious Education 2 UNCC100 Our World: Community and Vulnerability (University Core curriculum unit 1) Preservice teachers not seeking employment in Catholic Primary schools All preservice teachers not seeking permanent employment in Catholic schools are required to undertake the two University Core Curriculum units (UNCC100 Our World: Community Vulnerability and UNCC300 Understanding Self and Society: Contemporary Perspectives). Additionally five units must be chosen to complete the required 32 units of study in the BEd Primary program. Core Curriculum Units UNCC100 Our World: Community Vulnerability (All students). 7 Bachelor of Education (Primary) with Honours - only available to 2013 and 2014 intakes To be invited to apply for the Honours program, a student must have completed 160 cp from Years 1 and 2 of the Bachelor of Education (Primary) degree with a grade point average (GPA) of at least 6.0. Students must maintain a minimum GPA of 6.0 for the duration of the course. Identified Honours applicants who fulfil the admission criteria will be invited to enrol into three Honours units (40cp) in Years 3 and 4 and will not be required to complete the 10 cp unit: EDFD457 Action Research as a Reflective Practice. For students who wish to teach in Catholic schools this will result in a 30 cp unit overload, (350 cp program). Identified Honours applicants who do not wish to teach in Catholic schools may complete the BEd(Pri)(Hons) in 320 cp by utilising existing course electives. Please refer to the Faculty s Professional and Community Experience 3 webpage for requirements in your local State/Territory. The Professional Experience Office will provide further information about the PEP prior to students commencing the program. Supervised professional experience is at the heart of all our Initial Teacher Education courses and the Faculty will find appropriate placements to suit the needs of your course. Placements will usually be arranged for the scheduled placement period in the professional experience calendar, although this may not always be possible.
