1 CENTRE FOR ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND INNOVATION INTRODUCTION There are many reasons for UWC to be proud of its rich history and to celebrate its recent successes. Given its history of growing and developing leaders that have impacted significantly in the space of political and economic development of South Africa, UWC has established the Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (CEI) which will generate the same successful outcomes in the areas of entrepreneurship education, innovation and small business development as it has done in so many other areas of national development. UWC, understanding the key role of entrepreneurship in the context of stimulating small business growth, wants to position itself strongly in this space. UWC understands the importance of this role in reducing unemployment and impacting positively on communities. a critical prerequisite is expanding and enabling sectors with high levels of skills requirements and advanced expertise. South Africa s National Development Policy aims to eliminate poverty and reduce inequality by According to the plan, South Africa can realise these goals by drawing on the energies of its people, growing an inclusive economy, building capabilities, enhancing the capacity of the state, and promoting leadership and partnerships throughout society. However, the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor research reflects South Africa unfavourably in terms of perceived capabilities and entrepreneurial intentions. South African experts cited education and training as a key factor constraining entrepreneurship. UWC, understanding the key role of entrepreneurship in the context of stimulating small business growth, wants to position itself strongly in this space. UWC understands the importance of this role in reducing unemployment and impacting positively on communities. The UWC CEI is playing an influential role in developing businesses and entrepreneurs, especially those based in our communities. Universities and industry have been collaborating for over a century, but the rise of a global knowledge economy has intensified the need for strategic partnerships that go beyond the traditional funding of discrete research projects, transforming the role of the research university for the 21st century and anchoring it as a vital centre of competence to help tackle social challenges and drive economic growth. In the case of South Africa, it is in addition now widely accepted that accelerated economic growth is essential for its development and driving back poverty and inequality through job creation and improving the quality of life for the broader population, for which

6 ENTREPRENEURSHIP PROJECTS (A) STUDENT START-UP The Student Start- Up campaign was launched in May 2016 to develop a strong entrepreneurship culture on campus. The main aim is to drive and manage entrepreneurship development among students and university personnel, who run businesses or have a business idea. Over 50 students and university personnel attended the launch and signed up to participate in the campaign. Koi Strategy founder Neil Hinrichsen managed a three-day workshop, while the UWC Centre for Entrpreneurship and Innovation hosted masterclasses that will run from July to October. The Student Start-Up will be a UWC CEI regular initiative to help students create entrepreneurship opportunities and to develop as business owners. (B) FLOW FINDERS The Flows Finders campaign is a UWC post-grad student-focused entrepreneur workshop, which is aimed at developing academics in the field of entrepreneurship. This will help postgrad students identify entrepreneurship opportunities and give them the necessary skills and tools to start and grow a business. The workshop will be managed by Flow Finder s Christoff Oosthuysen, who is focused on increasing flow experiences in the workplace. Here he helps customers from corporations, small businesses and not-for-profit organisations to find meaning in their work so that they can achieve their personal goals and contribute effectively to the objectives of the organisations they work in. (C) ENTREPRENEURSHIP EXPO These expos run regularly, bringing together all support services who potentially will benefit SMMEs in one event. The expos provide these entrepreneurs with information and advice from variety of public and private organisations on the benefits of entrepreneurship as well as how to ether start or grow a business. The idea of an expo is to create a one-stop shop for SMMEs to access information by setting up relevant exhibitions that will provide information in SMME growth. (D) FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMME The objectives are to create an environment that attracts entrepreneurs who want to grow their business, create network opportunities and to put UWC on the map with regards to empowerment and reaching new heights in an engaged university. To qualify as a Fellow, you would need to successfully graduate from a UWC Entrepreneurship short course. Fellows have the opportunity to enhance their skills, knowledge, and experience through peer-to-peer learning, workshops, and contact with eminent persons. Fellows embark on a diagnostic process that will identify the gaps specific to their business and industry. A Personal Development Plan will then be devised for your growth and as a Fellow you will then embark on a yearlong programme at UWC with a business mentor. (E) LET S TALK BUSINESS BOOTCAMP These are short thematic workshops covering elements like SARS compliance, B-BBEE and scorecard rating process, tendering, joint ventures and access to funding etc.

7 OUR PROUD PARTNERS CITY OF CAPE TOWN LAUNCH LAB KOI STRATEGY ABSA ABSA is committed to addressing the unemployment and poverty challenges faced by many South Africans. With over 12 million South Africans reliant on small and medium-sized businesses for their livelihoods, more focus needs to be placed on the growth and development of these businesses. ABSA is a proud sponsor of the UWC Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation Centre. Cape Town is a businessfriendly destination that prioritises an enabling environment for entrepreneurship and business growth. While different services exist within the City of Cape Town, there are also support organisations that provide services to people who are either doing business or wanting to start a business in the city. LaunchLab sees a thriving ecosystem for entrepreneurs in Africa where the members learn, share and grow to achieve excellence through focus. The ecosystem grows by giving back to those inside and outside the ecosystem and in so doing, attracts new members. LaunchLab is an initiative that forms part of the partnership between the University of Stellenbosch, University of the Western Cape, University of Cape Town, Cape Peninsula University of Technology and False Bay College. The Koi Strategy Idea Workshop is a fastpaced, interactive threeday workshop that will teach you the KoiCreate methodology used by top startups to accelerate their business at every stage of the growth cycle. Neil Hinrichsen has cofounded two companies that were both acquired including a mobile payments company acquired by Visa for $110m. He now mentors some of the top start-ups in South Africa. Neil manages the UWC CEI Student Start-Up workshop and masterclasses. CONCLUSION CONTACT US POSTAL ADDRESS Appreciating the immensity of this role and the opportunity to contribute towards job creation and empowering small businesses and communities, UWC seeks visionary partners who see the considerable potential for socio-economic value creation through the CEI. We would like you to join us on this journey, a journey that will see us develop the next generation of entrepreneurial employers and job-creators who will contribute towards addressing unemployment and small business needs within our communities and our country by focusing on business growth. We need partners who will participate and contribute to the University s entrepreneurial aspirations that deliver into the country s national imperatives of meaningful job creation, improved quality of life for all South Africans and overall economic growth.
