2 Hello, fellow Adventurers, Mr. Marc here! Today on Adventure to Fitness, we traveled back in time to the Prehistoric Age of dinosaurs. While we were there, we crossed a tar pit, barely escaped a super croc, and dodged giant rocks being dropped by a pterodactyl. We also climbed up a five-story tall giant brachiosaurus and then slid down its dino-coaster, outran a pack of baby eoraptors, raced alongside a pair of triceratops, and survived being chased by an angry T. Rex. Thanks to Professor Maddison, we discovered a lot of information about the Prehistoric Ages. We learned the difference between herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores, how eating a healthy mix of meats and vegetables and fruits is good nutrition, and the importance of not judging a book by its cover. We also learned about respecting wildlife and the dangers of not leaving it alone! While we need to exercise our muscles to keep our bodies fit, we know we need to exercise our minds too. That s why our team at Adventure to Fitness created these additional mind adventures for you to share with your students. There s one mind adventure for each grade level, K-5. 3 vocabulary 1. ASPHALT (noun): A brownish-black solid or semisolid mixture of bitumens obtained from native deposits or as a petroleum byproduct, used in paving, roofing, and waterproofing. 2. BRACHIOSAURUS (noun): Meaning "arm lizard", from the Greek brachion/βρατιων meaning "arm" and sauros/σασρος meaning "lizard", was a genus of sauropod dinosaur that lived during the Late Jurassic Period and possibly the Early Cretaceous Period. 3. CARNIVORE (noun): Any of various predatory, flesh-eating mammals of the order Carnivora, including the dogs, cats, bears, weasels, hyenas, and raccoons. 4. DINOSAUR (noun): Any of various extinct, often gigantic, carnivorous or herbivorous reptiles of the orders Saurischia and Ornithischia that were chiefly terrestrial and existed during the Mesozoic Era. 5. ERA (noun): A period of time as reckoned from a specific date serving as the basis of its chronological system. 6. FERN (noun): Any of numerous flowerless, seedless vascular plants having roots, stems, and fronds and reproducing by spores. 7. HERBIVORE (noun): An animal that feeds chiefly on plants. 8. PRESERVE (verb): To keep in perfect or unaltered condition; maintain unchanged. 9. PTERODACTYL (noun): Any of various small, mostly tailless, extinct flying reptiles of the order Pterosauria that existed during the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. 2

4 10. PREHISTORIC AGE (noun): The time before written history became available. 11. OMNIVORE (noun): Eating both animal and vegetable foods. 12. SARCOSUCHUS (noun): Meaning 'flesh crocodile' and commonly called "Super Croc" is an extinct genus of crocodyliform and distant relative of the crocodile that lived 112 Million years ago. 13. SAUROPOD (noun): A very large herbivorous dinosaur of the Jurassic and Cretaceous having a small head a long neck and tail and five-toed limbs; largest known land animal. 14. SWAMP (noun): A seasonally flooded bottomland with more woody plants than a marsh and better drainage than a bog. 15. TAR PIT (noun): A geological occurrence where subterranean bitumen leaks to the surface, creating a large puddle, pit, or lake of asphalt. 16. THERAPOD (noun): Meaning "beast feet" are a group of bipedal saurischian dinosaurs. Although they were primarily carnivorous, a number of theropod groups evolved herbivory, omnivory, and insectivory. 17. TYRANNOSAURUS REX (noun): A large carnivorous bipedal dinosaur having enormous teeth with knifelike serrations; may have been a scavenger rather than an active predator. 18. WINGSPAN (noun): The linear distance between the extremities of an airfoil. 3

6 Addasaurus Suggested Grade Level: Kindergarten Common Core State Standard: Understand addition as putting together and adding to, and understand subtraction as taking apart and taking from. Overview: In this mind adventure, students will listen to a story about dinosaurs that explains the basic concept of addition and then do some adding of their own. Content Area: Mathematics Required Materials: Too Many Dinosaurs (A Smart Start Math Book) by Bob Barner Pencil Adventure to Fitness Worksheet Time Required: minutes Procedures: 1. Read the story, Too Many Dinosaurs (A Smart Start Math Book) by Bob Barner to your students. 2. As you read the story to students, have them participate by solving the math problems in the story. 3. Review the concept of addition. 4. Model another example of addition before having the students work on word problems. 5. Provide students with an Adventure to Fitness Worksheet. 6. As a class, solve each word problem. Ask the students to try to solve some of the addition problems on their own before going over them as a class. 5

8 Addasaurus Suggested Grade Level: First Grade Common Core State Standard: Add and subtract within 20. Overview: Mr. Marc came in contact with all kinds of dinosaurs. In this mind adventure, students will solve dinosaur addition and subtraction word problems. Content Area: Mathematics Required Materials: Tyrannosaurus Math by Michelle Markel Pencil Adventure to Fitness Worksheet Time Required: minutes Procedures: 1. Read the story, Tyrannosaurus Math by Michelle Markel to your students. 2. As you read the story to students, have them participate by solving the math problems in the story. 3. Inform the students that today they will be practicing two-digit addition problems. 4. Review place value and order of operations when adding two-digit numbers. 5. Model adding two-digit numbers by sharing an example on the board. 6. Provide students with an Adventure to Fitness Worksheet and have them complete it individually after reading each problem to the class. 7. Go over answers with the class. 6

Overview: In this mind adventure, students will listen to a story that includes dinosaur math and then put their new knowledge to use by practicing skip counting. Overview: In this mind adventure, students will decide upon the best resource for checking to see if the reported information is factual. Overview: While watching Dino Disaster we learned that you shouldn t judge a book by its cover. In this mind adventure, students will articulate what this actually means to them. Content Area: Language Arts Required Materials: Pencil Paper Time Required: minutes Procedures: 1. Read and display the following writing prompt: You often hear people say that we shouldn t judge people for their outside appearance, but rather for what s on the inside. What does this mean to you? 2. As a class, briefly discuss the writing prompt. Use an example from the episode to illustrate the point (e.g. some of the largest dinosaurs were the gentlest and ate only plants). 3. Ask volunteers to share their writing. 9

15 Dino Eggspedition Suggested Grade Level: Fifth Grade Common Core State Standard: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. In this mind adventure, students will tell the story about the time they found a mysterious egg and what happened when it hatched.
