3 INFO125 12S COURSE AIM AND OBJECTIVES Visual Basic is one of the most popular programming languages and is used for the development of applications of different sizes. It is easy to learn and use. INFO 125 is targeted at beginning programmers. It aims to introduce students to the programming logic necessary for development of information systems regardless of the programming language used; to programming and database concepts; and to the development of simple applications using VB.net and Microsoft Visual Studio. This course will build a practical and theoretical foundation for future study and careers. Learning Outcomes: By the end of this course the student should be able to: Analyse business environments to define user requirements Discuss the steps in developing an application in Visual Basic.NET. Understand the basic concepts of programming, problem solving and design techniques Understand the Visual Studio environment and use its functionality to develop simple business applications Understand the concepts of object-oriented programming in Windows and Visual Basic.NET Understand how databases are used to store business data. Describe the parts of a database and understand database operations. Access and manipulate data from applications. Protect applications from unauthorised access Gain hands-on development experience through a series of tutorial exercises. 2. COURSE REQUIREMENTS Pre-requisites: None. No previous University of Canterbury course is needed. Recommended Preparation: No formal academic preparation in information technology. A good standard of English understanding is necessary. Course Restrictions: None
4 INFO125 12S1 4 Course Assessments: Assessment Contribution to final grade (%) In-class quiz 8% Two homework assignments 16% Mid-semester test 36%* Final exam 40%* Total 100% *The dates for the test and final exam will be set by the university after the completion of enrolment. It is your responsibility as a student to check the Course Information System (CIS) web site for the date and time for the term test and final exam. To pass INFO125 you have to: a) gain a mark for the semester as a whole of 50% or more. (But the department reserves the right to move this 50% threshold slightly up or down to ensure fairness.) b) satisfy the 'the 45% rule' of the ACIS department. This means that in order to pass the course as a whole you must average not less than 45% over the invigilated components of your assessments. In INFO125 only the homework assignments are NOT invigilated. 3. In the first hour of the tutorials, the tutor will guide you through some examples based on the lecture material. In the second hour you can practice further based on a self-paced tutorial handout. A tutor will be available to help and answer questions. d) Course information on UC Learn: The UC Learn website is a valuable source of information for INFO125 students where lecturers place course related material for students to access.

Class Representatives At the beginning of the course, class representatives will be selected by the class. These students provide a valuable link between the students, the course supervisor and the department. The representatives are encouraged to have discussions with the course supervisors on a regular basis. This process should help to resolve potential concerns and can provide positive feedback on elements of the course which are going well. 6.
