2 In January 2016, we were fortunate enough to have the opportunity to speak with Tim Peake live via amateur radio on the ISS. Can any other STEM project ever be more exciting than that?

3 High Altitude Balloon Launch Time to bring things back down to Earth (gradually)...

4 How does it work? We will be a launching a high altitude balloon from our own school field which will ascend to near space capturing pictures, video and data, before bursting at around 30,000 metres high. The balloon will then descend at around 6 metres a second and we will need to track, chase and recover the payload from its landing site! Raspberry Pi s will be attached to the balloon which will capture the images and data. Meanwhile, we will need to use online tools, Raspberry Pi trackers and radios to track the balloon throughout its flight.

5 Why is this so special? 30,000 metres is equivalent to around 100,000 feet. That means our high altitude balloon will travel three times higher than a passenger aircraft The school will have its own pictures taken from near space (hopefully capturing the curvature of the Earth) We will be able to download data we have collected from near space for analysis and use in lessons We will part of a small group of schools to be the first to launch a high altitude balloon in the UK (and the world) Students will run this project by forming a number of teams in charge of different aspects in order to make this project successful

6 How can YOU get involved? Technical Design and Build Team As part of this team you will build the hardware that will record data, capture images and transmit GPS data from near space. You will also build the trackers that the Tracking and Recovery Team will use to monitor the flightpath of the payload throughout the flight. Beyond designing and developing, you will also be involved in extensive and detailed testing to maximise the chance of a successful flight and recovery. Payload Design and Build Team Using the details provided from Technical Design and Build Team you will have the task of designing a payload box which is suitable for the flight to near space. You will need to produce a robust solution which will provide a balance between obtaining high quality footage whilst maximising robustness to survive the elements and forces of the flight and landing. Flight Launch Team This team will actually launch our high altitude balloon to near space! Accuracy will be key, as you will carry out the essential calculations and predictions required for the launch. Your role will span months and weeks before the event as you will help to submit the Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

7 How can YOU get involved? Tracking and Recovery Team As part of the tracking and recovery team you will help to determine the success of the flight by hopefully recovering the payload from the site where it lands following the descent from near space. Media and Communications Team The social media team will play a key role in keeping students, teachers, parents and the rest of the world up to date with the progress of our high altitude balloon flight. Your commitment will be essential on the run up to, during and after the launch.
