2 Copyediting and Proofreading Symbols after BS :2005 May inc. circled number None. End of change. Make after a change that is not an insertion or deletion. Circled number indicates number of times change is repeated in same line. Leave unchanged. Under characters to remain Put a circle around the blemish. Indicates a typesetting error causing a blemish on the page. Put a circle around the affected word(s). Questioning whether the meaning of the words concerned is accurate. Insert new material in text the material to be added should be shown in the margin. The circled number indicates places where the same new material needs to be repeated in the line. Insert additional material, marked with the letter on a separate sheet. Used where there is a large amount of material to add and it will not fit into the margin. Or through all characters to be deleted Through single character Delete. Use for delete at the beginning or end of a word, where no space is left for deletion. Number indicates the number of deletions consecutively in same line.
