1 AkzoNobel Functional Chemicals Operating Manual Heat Exchanger set-up and bubbler installation Introduction The use of large bubblers with conventional constant temperature baths has limited applicability due to the in-cabinet space required for such baths as well as the cost associated with the purchasing of an additional large capacity bath. To help reduce customer costs and to help optimize in-cabinet space, AkzoNobel HPMO has developed the Heat Exchanger. The Heat Exchanger is an in-cabinet bubbler Heat Exchanger that operates in conjunction with your conventional constant temperature bath and circulator pump. It not only allows an easy, cost effective conversion to large capacity bubblers which reduce production downtime, but also provides a more stable thermal condition for the bubbler which improves flow stability. As of December 2006, over thirty Heat Exchangers have been installed in commercial production systems; they are currently used in Europe, the United States, and Taiwan. HPMO /August 204 Page of 5

2 The Heat Exchanger can be used with l, 3 l and 8 l AkzoNobel bubblers as specified below. There are separate installation kits for the68 series bubblers and the 4 series bubblers due to the difference in bubbler corpus diameter (68.3 mm compared with 4.3 mm). Therefore, when ordering a Heat Exchanger please specify the bubbler number, volume, and dimensions (corpus diameter and corpus height) so that the appropriate installation kit will be supplied. If you already own a Heat Exchanger and need to change the bubbler series, consult with your sales representative to order the appropriate spare parts. 3 Specifications This table represents the suggested requirements and the acceptable operation ranges for the use of a single Heat Exchanger. For more detailed information please contact your sales representative; all sales representatives have experience advising customers on Heat Exchanger installation. An equipment suggestion is given below; however, please contact a sales representative for more specific information. 2) This information describes one pump that has been successfully used for Heat Exchanger operation; other pumps may also be suitable. An external pump can be operated in series with the constant temperature recirculation system pump or it can be used alone. If the pumps are used in series, then the pressure will be the sum of both pump pressures and flow rates will increase. HPMO /August 204 Page 3 of 5

4 8 l and 3 l (68 series) Bubbler Installation (68 series indicates bubblers with a corpus diameter of 68.3 mm) After unpacking your Heat Exchanger, remove the Pressure Ring O-ring and Pressure Ring (A and A2) which will be used later to secure the bubbler in place. These items are installed on the Heat Exchanger for transport purposes and must be removed prior to bubbler installation. Please refer to the assembly drawing in Section VI for all part number references used in this manual. The Heat Exchanger is delivered preinstalled for the particular bubbler size specified by the customer. As such, steps - 4 may be skipped. These steps are included here to show the complete assembly of the Heat Exchanger.. Put the Heat Exchanger Bath (H) into the Heat Exchanger Base (H2) and close the fastener of the Heat Exchanger Base to secure the bath. The Heat Exchanger Base may be used with or without wheels. H H2 close 2. For the 3 l (68 series) bubbler ONLY! Place the Height Adapter (H3) into the Heat Exchanger Bath (H). This will support the bottom of the 3 l bubbler when installed in the Heat Exchanger. (The 8 l bubbler will rest on the bottom of the Heat Exchanger Bath). H3 H 3 l only 3. Insert the Top Ring O-ring (H4) into the groove on the bottom side of the Top Ring (H5). Please check for proper fit. H4 H5 HPMO /August 204 Page 4 of 5

5 4. Put the Top Ring (H5) with Top Ring O-ring (H4) in place onto the Heat Exchanger Bath (H) and tighten with eight (8 - M6 x 20) stainless steel hexagon screws with washers (H6). H4, H5 Note: The feed-through with a Dip Tube is labeled (IN) and will later be connected to the coolant supply from the pump to the Heat Exchanger. H Dip Tube indicates supply to Heat Exhanger 5. The Heat Exchanger is now ready for bubbler installation. The bubbler should be held vertically and gently inserted into the opening of the Heat Exchanger. Note: The bubbler hand valves should be orientated 90 from the IN and OUT feed-throughs of the Heat Exchanger. Note: The 8 l bubbler will rest on the bottom of the Heat Exchanger Bath and the 3 l (68 series) bubbler will rest on the Height Adapter. HPMO /August 204 Page 5 of 5

6 6. Carefully put the Pressure Ring O-ring (A) over the top of the bubbler and position it into the depression formed by the Top Ring (H5) and the bubbler. A H5 7. Position the Pressure Ring (A2) into the machined groove in the Top Ring. The Pressure Ring should make contact with the Pressure Ring O-ring (A). Secure the Pressure Ring seal with eight (8 - M5 x 6) stainless steel hexagon screws with washers (A3). A2 Note: The Pressure Ring is split into two pieces to accommodate the bubbler valves and the Heat Exchanger Bath supply and return feedthroughs. 8. Place the Top Insulation Outer Ring (A4) over the Heat Exchanger making sure the hexagon heads are aligned with the machined gaps of the Top Insulation Outer Ring. Note: If the hexagon heads fail to fit securely into the gaps of the Top Insulation Outer Ring, the Insulation will protrude from the Top Ring and the remaining insulation parts will not fit as intended. 7 9. Fit the divided Top Insulation Inner Ring (A5 2 pcs.) onto the top of the Heat Exchanger and bubbler. A5 0. Remove the protective covers from the supply and return feed-throughs of the Heat Exchanger. Connect the quick disconnect hose couplers of the Supply and Return Hoses (H7 and H8) to the appropriate Heat Exchanger feed-through couplers. The feed-throughs are identified on the Top Ring as IN (supply from pump) and OUT (return to recirculating system). Note: The Return Hose (with a flow indicator) should be connected to the return/outlet of the Heat Exchanger to confirm flow through the Heat Exchanger. H7 H8 Note: The quick disconnect hose couplers are double shutoff, to disconnect pull the locking sleeves upwards. This does not require removal of the insulation. 8 3 l and l (4 series) Bubbler Installation (4 series indicates Bubblers with a corpus diameter of 4.3 mm) After unpacking your Heat Exchanger, remove the Adapter Flange Pressure Ring O-ring and Adapter Flange Pressure Ring (B4 and B5) which will be used later to secure the bubbler in place. These items are installed on the Heat Exchanger for transport purposes and must be removed prior to bubbler installation. Please refer to the assembly drawing in Section VI for all part number references used in this manual. The Heat Exchanger is delivered preinstalled for the particular bubbler size specified by the customer. This insures that all of the appropriate parts are included with initial shipment. Therefore steps - 8 may be skipped.. Put the Heat Exchanger Bath (H) into the Heat Exchanger Base (H2) and close the fastener of the Heat Exchanger Base to secure the bath. The Heat Exchanger Base may be used with or without wheels. H H2 close 2. For the L (4 series) bubbler ONLY! Place the Height Adapter (H3) into the Heat Exchanger Bath (H). This will support the bottom of the L bubbler when installed in the Heat Exchanger (the 3 L (4 series) bubbler will rest on the bottom of the Heat Exchanger Bath). H3 H l only 3. Insert the Top Ring O-ring (H4) into the groove on the bottom side of the Top Ring (H5). Please check for proper fit. H4 H5 HPMO /August 204 Page 8 of 5

9 4. Put the Top Ring (H5) with Top Ring O-ring (H4) in place onto the Heat Exchanger Bath (H) and tighten with eight (8 - M6 x 20) stainless steel hexagon screws with washers (H6). H4, H5 Note: The feed-through with a Dip Tube is labeled (IN) and will later be connected to the coolant supply from the pump to the Heat Exchanger. H Dip Tube indicates supply to Heat Exhanger 5. Install the Adapter Flange O-ring (B) on the bottom of the Adapter Flange Top Ring (B2). The o-ring should fit securely around the smallest diameter machined ring. B B2 6. Put the Adapter Flange Top Ring (B2) with Adapter Flange O-ring (B) onto the Top Ring (H5) and secure with eight (8 - M5 x 6) stainless steel hexagon screws with washers (B3). 10 7. Apply Teflon tape to the threaded ¼ Dip Tube feed-though (IN) for proper sealing. 8. Install the male quick disconnect hose coupler onto the ¼ Dip Tube feed-through. 9. The Heat Exchanger is now ready for bubbler installation. Put the Adapter Pressure Ring O-ring (B4) over the bottom of the bubbler. B4 HPMO /August 204 Page 0 of 5

11 0. Hold the bubbler vertically and gently insert into the opening of the Heat Exchanger. The Adapter Pressure Ring O-ring (B4) should remain outside of the Heat Exchanger Bath. B4 Note: The bubbler hand valves should be orientated 90 from the IN and OUT feedthroughs of the Heat Exchanger. Note: The 3 l (4 series) bubbler will rest on the bottom of the Heat Exchanger Bath and the L bubbler will rest on the Height Adapter.. Position the Adapter Pressure Ring O-ring (B4) into the depression formed by the Adapter Flange Top Ring (B3) and the bubbler. B4 B2 2. Position the Adapter Pressure Ring (B5) into the machined groove in the Adapter Flange Top Ring (B3). The Adapter Pressure Ring should make contact with the Adapter Pressure Ring O-ring. Secure the Adapter Pressure Ring seal with eight (8 - M5 x 6) stainless steel hexagon screws with washers (B6). 12 3. Place the Top Insulation Outer Ring (B7) over the Heat Exchanger making sure the hexagon heads are aligned with the machined gaps of the Top Insulation Outer Ring. Note: If the hexagon heads fail to fit securely into the gaps of the Top Insulation Outer Ring, the Insulation will protrude from the Top Ring and the remaining insulation parts will not fit as intended. 13 5. Remove the protective covers from the supply and return feedthroughs of the Heat Exchanger. Connect the quick disconnect hose couplers of the Supply and Return Hoses (H7 and H8) to the appropriate Heat Exchanger feed-through couplers. The feed-throughs are identified on the Top Ring as IN (supply from pump) and OUT (return to recirculating system). Note: The Return Hose (with a flow indicator) should be connected to the return/outlet of the Heat Exchanger to confirm flow through the Heat Exchanger. 14 List of Parts The Heat Exchanger is constructed from 36 l grade stainless steel and all o-rings are made of viton. The insulation materials used in the Heat Exchanger are elastomeric foam for the Heat Exchanger Bath, polyethylene foam for the insulation rings, and elastomeric foam for the hoses. The hoses have an inner diameter (ID) of 8 mm and an outer diameter (OD) of 3 mm. The fittings on the Heat Exchanger are double shut-off quick disconnect hose couplings which prevent fluid from leaking from both the supply and return when fittings are removed.
