16 Migration and Birth Rate Between 2001 and 2006, Muskoka had a relatively low out-migration of youth in comparison with other northern communities. As a result, to sustain consistent increases in population growth, Muskoka, like many other municipalities in Ontario, must rely on migration. The most recent figures released by Statistics Canada in 2007 seem to indicate that Muskoka experienced an increase in migration, which has resulted in greater than expected population growth. 17 Level of Education (2006) Given the large construction and home renovation industry in Muskoka, it is not surprising to find that the percentage of those with trades certificates exceeds the national and provincial levels. Muskoka s population is also made up of a higher percentage of college graduates than the provincial and national averages. 20 Labour Force Muskoka provides for a variety of employment opportunities, both full and part time, although much of the economy is focused on service and trades. Due to the large fluctuations in population, permanent residents in Muskoka have the added benefit of a number of services that may not otherwise be provided. This results in increased employment opportunities throughout the year. Trends Muskoka has almost one-third of its labour force employed in services such as accommodation, food and beverage sectors, which reflects the tourism-oriented local economic base. When compared with similar regions in North-Central Ontario, Muskoka s employment base has expanded significantly since Where many other northern regions have experienced minimal employment growth, Muskoka has seen a consistently strong increase due to a healthy tourism economy and an expanding service sector. Muskoka has an employment rate among the highest in Northern Ontario, as well as the lowest unemployment rate.
