SAFEGUARDING LEAFLET St Andrew s CE Primary School where young minds grow and young hearts learn to care This is a basic introduction to the school, its children and key policies & procedures including how to keep children safe for supply teachers, work experience students and other very important visitors!
Introduction Welcome to St Andrew s CE Primary School, a Christian values, rights respecting school where young minds grow and young hearts learn to care. We hope you enjoy your visit. Please let us know if there is anything that could make your visit even better. Ben Arnell Headteacher Key People Headteacher Ben Arnell Deputy Headteacher Sarah Beach Chair of Governors Cathy Armstrong Bursar (office) - Caroline Campbell Office Kate Gardiner KS2 Leader Dave Cox KS1 Leader Claire Johnson Early Years Leader Anita Smith Any of the staff at St Andrew s will be pleased to help with any queries or questions you may have, however small. 2
Safeguarding St Andrew s is committed to safeguarding and recognises its responsibilities with regard to Child Protection. If, during your visit, you have any concerns about the welfare or well being of a child, please discuss it immediately with your mentor and one of our Designated Safeguarding Leads Ben Arnell (Headteacher) or Chris Parfitt (Parent Support Advisor). It maybe that they ask you to complete a yellow Cause For Concern form. Please be assured that no concern is insignificant and that, by passing on your information in a confidential manner, you will be fulfilling your responsibility to provide a safe environment in which children can learn. For more information, please refer to our Child Protection Policy and the government guidance Keeping Children Safe in Education (April 2014) and Working Together to Safeguard Children (March 2013) - all of which are available from the office. 3
Rights & Responsibilities Our Behaviour System St Andrew s is a Rights Respecting School and teaches the children about their Rights. Every child has the right to a voice Every child has the right to be treated fairly Every child has the right to be safe Every child has the right to be happy Every child has the right to learn and grow (adapted from the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child) All children and adults are expected to respect these Rights and provide opportunities for their provision. Along with these Rights, the children have Responsibilities to ensure they are met. Children are encouraged to make good choices and are awarded house marbles for demonstrating this. Conversely, if a child makes a poor choice, marbles can be removed. Serious behavioural choices such as bad language, rudeness to adults or fighting must be referred immediately to the Headteacher or Deputy Headteacher. Further guidance can be found in our Behaviour and Anti-Bullying Policies. 4
Values St Andrew s promotes Christian Values. Each month, a value is discussed in Collective Worship and through PSHE. Our reward system is closely linked with the values. MONTH September October November December January February March April May June July 5 VALUE Love Respect Unity Thankfulness Aspiration Compassion Excellence Forgiveness Friendship Resilience Faith
Timetables The school day is from 8:45am 3:15pm (Nursery 8:45 11:45, 12:30 3:30) Children in KS1 and KS2 enter through the main playground from 8:30. There will be staff on duty from 8:30 8:45 to answer any parent queries. Reception and Nursery children enter via their respective side gates on Spencer St. At the end of the day, children are collected from the main playground and are supervised by a member of staff until a known adult collects them. Reception and Nursery children are collected from their classrooms. Break times and lunchtimes are staggered during the day. Please check with the class teacher for specific timings. Lunchtimes Adults in school are welcome and encouraged to use the staffroom at lunch and break times. Visitors under the age of 18 are welcome to use the staffroom for making drinks and at break times but we would request they use the Woodland Room to eat lunch. 6
Policies Fire Drill If you hear a long, continuous bell, please make your way quietly and calmly out of the building immediately, following the green FIRE EXIT signs. A member of staff will check that you have vacated the building. Please do not return to the building unless informed by a member of staff. Confidentiality As a visitor to our school, you must ensure that confidentiality about a pupil, their families or members of staff is respected at all times. Confidential, personal or sensitive information must never be disclosed to anyone other than on a need to know basis. Health & Safety Health & Safety of children and adults is everyone s responsibility. Please make sure you shut all outside doors behind you and be diligent and about anything that might cause an issue. Please alert a member of staff immediately if you have any concerns. All policies and procedures are kept in the office and can be requested at any time. 7
What we need from you Please sign in at Reception on each visit to the school. You will be given a visitors badge which you must wear at all times. Please sign out and return your badge when leaving school, even if you are returning the same day! Photo ID we would ask that all visitors provide photo ID to Reception DBS all visitors working with children need to provide a DBS form. If a DBS form is not presented, visitors will be escorted at all times. We appreciate your understanding about this. If you are ill or cannot come into school for any other reason, please contact the school office and your Mentor as soon as possible on Parking is a perennial issue in schools and we ask that you respect both staff and local residents by parking in an appropriate place. If you have to leave your car in the staff car park, please inform the office so they know who the car belongs to if it needs to be moved! Finally, please make the most of your visit by engaging fully with the activities and children you experience. Most of all, smile and enjoy sharing your talents with our lovely children! 8
