1. Introduction This technical white paper describes how to use and configure the Power Management Packs published by Microsoft for System Center Operation Manager (SCOM) to monitor the power consumption of Fujitsu PRIMERGY Servers Management Summary Why server management? New applications and IT concepts as well as the increasing complexity of IT structures result in the need for a central server administration concept. Because of diminishing budgets the availability and manageability of IT systems are more important than ever before. Virtually hundred-percent availability of core business applications is often required, while the operation and management of servers should be as simple and reliable as possible. As experience shows, about 80% of the total cost of ownership of IT systems is incurred after procurement due to server and network administration and the need to uphold security standards and guarantee the provision of maintenance and service work. The PRIMERGY management concept covering the Fujitsu ServerView Suite is a step toward trouble-free operation of IT systems. It helps to reduce the total cost of ownership for IT infrastructures dramatically Why "integration"? Most vendor specific management solutions similar to Fujitsu ServerView Suite offer extensive functions for server administration and server life cycle management. Many of the users of these solutions use this platform-specific management as "their" Central Server Management solution. They are familiar with the handling and functionality, having invested a lot in establishing appropriate skills and are not willing to invest too much in additional management tools. As a consequence these users demand that Fujitsu PRIMERGY servers should be monitored and managed in an efficient way by means of integration into the known management system keeping the level of additional effort and platform-specific training as low as possible Highlights of ServerView Integration ServerView Integration into Microsoft System Center Operations Manager permits the PRIMERGY servers from Fujitsu to be monitored by SCOM. The ServerView Integration modules enable the PRIMERGY servers to be integrated easily into System Center Operations Manager monitoring Server Management Solutions Fujitsu ServerView Suite is an easy-to-use, comprehensive set of management programs for monitoring and managing Fujitsu PRIMERGY systems. A powerful alarm management facility that can also be configured individually over the Internet ensures rapid and secure forwarding of system messages to administrators or service providers. ServerView uses standardized protocols and interfaces. Administrators are provided with a quick and reliable overview of the operating status of the systems, utilization trends and possible sources of errors. The individually configurable alarm management facility ensures that predefined administrators or service providers can respond rapidly. The ServerView Suite management software consists of the ServerView Operations Manager, the front-end for the Management Station (manager / monitoring station), and the ServerView Agents / CIM Providers for the servers to be monitored. 3 2. Monitor Power Consumption of PRIMERGY Servers Microsoft has released Power Management Packs for System Center Operations Manager (SCOM) to monitor Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2012 systems. Both packs have the same purpose and functions monitoring and managing the power of computers running the Windows Server Operating System - except that they target different versions of the Windows OS. The management packs may be applied to monitor power consumption of Fujitsu PRIMERGY Servers monitored with SCOM provided certain prerequisites are met and configuration steps are done. Within this White Paper the basic configuration steps needed are described. Please also always refer to the Management Pack Guide published by Microsoft with the management pack for any details on configurations steps and description of monitoring scenarios. The guide is available via download from Microsoft in conjunction with the respective management pack (see 3.1 References) Prerequisites Requirements regarding System Center Operations Manager: System Center Operations Manager (2007 R2 or 2012) installed and configured. The Power Management Pack for monitoring servers running Windows Server 2008 R2 may be installed with System Center 2007 R2 or later. The Power Management Pack for monitoring servers running Windows Server 2012 requires System Center 2012 or later. Requirements regarding Operations Manager Reporting: To access power consumption reports provided by the packs, SQL Server Reporting Services must be installed. Refer to the system requirements specified in the corresponding System Center Operations Manager documentation for detailed installation and configuration requirements. Requirements regarding monitored servers: Servers with either Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows Server 2012 Operating System installed. Servers qualifying for the Enhanced Power Management Additional Qualification Logo. See below for explanations. Servers included in the SCOM management. Installed SCOM agent on the servers to be monitored. Restrictions: Agentless monitoring is not supported by the Management Packs. Monitoring of Virtual Environments is not supported by the Management Packs. The Enhanced Power Management Additional Qualification Logo was introduced to list servers which support the Power Management technology available from Windows Server 2008 R2 and higher. Server hardware qualified for this logo is listed in the Windows Server Catalog: Windows Server Catalog The Windows Server Catalog may be searched for corresponding hardware qualified for the additional feature (Enhanced Power Management) and also selected by vendor (Fujitsu). Current Fujitsu PRIMERGY models are qualified for the Enhanced Power Management Additional Qualification Logo Configure the Power Management Pack To use the Power Management Pack to monitor servers in your SCOM installation, follow these steps: Download the appropriate Power Management Pack (for Windows Server 2008 R2 and/or Windows Server 2012) and the corresponding Power Management Pack Guide from Microsoft. Both management packs may be installed individually or be used in conjunction if SCOM is to monitor servers with both releases of the Windows OS. Import the pack to your SCOM installation in the usual way from the Operations Console. Observe the prerequisites for the installation and eventually download and import packs for Windows Server needed to fulfill dependencies inherent to the pack first. Dependencies regarding common Windows OS management packs are described in the respective Management Pack Guide. As recommended, always create an override management pack first for customization and save any customizations to this new management pack. Then configure the overrides according to your monitoring needs and monitoring scenarios. Page 3 of 12
Basic configuration The basic configuration consists of the following steps: Create groups which consist of servers to be monitored. Define a Power Set, which is a logical group containing power-managed devices Create a Server Group Steps to create a group of servers: Open the Operations Console and change to the Authoring workspace for customization. Right-click Groups in the navigation pane and select Create a new Group. This will start the Create Group Wizard. Enter a Name for the new group and select the override management pack as the destination. On the next pages define the group members. As usual, you may enter the servers to be monitored as Explicit members in the Choose Members from a list page. To search for servers, use a suitable object type like Windows Computer, optionally filtered by name. Then select the objects from the search result. Optionally, populate Dynamic members via dynamic inclusion rules in the Create a Membership formula page. Save your settings when finished Define a Power Set Steps to define the Power Set: Open the Operations Console and change to the Authoring workspace for customization Select Add Monitoring Wizard In the Select monitoring type page, choose Power Consumption from the list displayed and click Next. In the following pages, specify the settings comprising the Power Set: The General properties, name and description. The Maximum capacity in kilowatts for the power set (mandatory) A Power budget, either as a percentage or an absolute number in kilowatts. The Power Budget serves as a threshold to indicate a percentage of available capacity to be observed by power management functions implemented in the management packs. Then apply the setting to the monitored Devices (the group of servers) defined before. Save your settings when finished. Page 4 of 12

2.3. Monitor Power Consumption in the Console Several views are available in the monitoring section of the SCOM Operations Console after the management pack is imported. They may be selected within the Monitoring workspace via the navigation pane under the entry Power Management in the navigation tree. Actual Power Consumption data for monitored servers is available after the configuration for the devices and the power set is finished. Views defined by the management pack are as follows: State Views Power Set: displays the state of the defined power sets Power Supply: displays the state of the discovered power supplies Power Plan: displays the current power plan of the Windows Operating System Event Views Power Budget Change Power Plan Change Both event views display changes to the Power Budget or the Power Plan, but only when these changes happened via power management tasks implemented with the Power Management pack Performance Views The actual power consumption of power supplies discovered by the pack is available in the Performance View Power Supply Performance Page 6 of 12
Power Supply Performance The Performance View Power Supply Performance displays the actual power data (power consumption collection in Watts) for power supplies which were collected by the associated performance rules implemented in the management pack. The data is collected for all servers in the configured devices groups. When both management packs for Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2012 are installed, it will show servers with both versions of the OS because it is defined in a common library shared by both packs. The single objects monitored may be selected for graphical output in the details pane. Check the Show box for output in the pane if the output is required. Additionally, different start and end times and time ranges may be selected in the task pane via Select Time Range. Example output of Power Supply Performance view: Page 7 of 12
2.4. Power Consumption Reports The management packs include predefined SQL reports. Display of reports is only possible when SQL Server Reporting Services are installed, configured and running. Reports for power consumption are available with some delay after the configuration was done when data was written and aggregated to the SCOM Data Warehouse database. The following reports are included in the Power Management packs: Power Consumption Power Consumption Detail Power Consumption Report Both are selectable via the Reporting workspace in the SCOM Operations Console. They may be selected from the results pane when the Power Management Library was selected in the navigation pane in the navigation tree before. The Power Consumption Report presents the average, maximum and minimum power consumption as calculated from the Operations Manager database for a specified Power Set. It may be customized selecting: An Object List (Group or single server) Start date and time End date and time Time zone CO2 per kwh / CO2Unit Power Consumption Report Selection: Page 8 of 12
Example output: Display of Overall Power Consumption for a Power Set: Page 9 of 12
Power Consumption Report The Power Consumption Detail Report shows the detailed power consumption information for a specific server. It may be customized selecting: Object List Data Aggregation (Daily or Hourly) Start date and time End date and time Time zone Selection of business hours Power Consumption Detail Report Selection: Example output: The report displays a graph. A detail table may additionally be selected for output. Page 10 of 12
2.5. Power Management Aside from the ability to gather and display power consumption data in the console and in predefined SQL reports, the management packs include monitors and rules to observe and optionally change or set the Power Plan and the Power Budget of monitored servers. By default, these functions are disabled when the pack is imported. They must be enabled and configured with changes stored to the override management pack as recommended. Please refer to the description in the guide for details regarding the configuration. The following section gives a general overview of the functions which are included The Power Plan The following functions are offered via the Power Plan: Monitor power plans Change or recover to a desired power plan The Power Management packs allow enabling a Power Plan Monitor. This will monitor the defined power plan of monitored servers and generate alerts when a desired plan is not active. Additionally the pack offers to enable a recovery task to set a specific power plan in case an alert is generated by the Power Plan Monitor The Power Budget The following functions are offered via the Power Budget: Monitor power consumption Change or recover to a desired power budget Set the power budget Set and limit the power budget for specified times The Power Management packs allow enabling a Windows Server 2008 R2 / Windows Server 2012 Power Consumption Monitor. The monitor will also generate alerts in case of specified events and additionally allow enabling a Power Budget Recovery task, a Power Plan Recovery task or both Set Power Budget The management packs also implement a task which allows changing the power budget of a power supply monitored. The task is named Set Power Budget. The task may be accessed via the Operations Console Monitoring workspace within the entry for Power Management for the target Power Supply in the navigation tree. For a power supply selected in the results pane as the target, it may be run from the task pane More Rules Additionally, the pack offers to enable a set of rules to limit the power budget settings for predefined time intervals. The rules are defined in both versions of the pack for either Windows Server 2008 R2 respective Windows Server 2012 Power Supply. They are named Set Power Budget for Business Hours and Set Power Budget for Non-Business-Hours and may be enabled and configured via the Operations Console. The rules may be accessed via the Authoring workspace of the console. Overrides may be defined for specific objects (power supply) of the corresponding target or for a specified group of servers Hints and Recommendations Changes regarding the Power Budget or the Power Plan of monitored servers done by using other methods than management functions implemented in the pack will be visible in the state views and performance view. Any Power Budget and Power Plan changes will however not be displayed as events in the corresponding event views (Power Plan Change, Power Budget Change) or lead to alerts when the changes were performed by any other method than System Center Operations Manager. With Fujitsu PRIMERGY Blade Servers Power Management the MMB offers comprehensive Power Management within the BX900 and BX400 chassis. Fujitsu recommends to rely on the internal Power Management of Fujitsu blade servers and not manage any server blades of internally managed BX chassis via SCOM. Please note that internally power-managed server blades may not accept any power budget settings from SCOM. Please note that the BMC (irmc) of Fujitsu s other servers also features Power Management options. Setting Power Management options within the irmc may interfere with the Power Settings from SCOM and vice versa. Make sure that Power Management of a server originates from only one source. Only monitoring the Power Consumption of an otherwise monitored server or blade server will not interfere with any internal power management. Page 11 of 12
