Pemberton is a strong, vibrant community with a population of just over 7,000 residents in the Village of Pemberton and surrounding area. Originally developed at the turn of the century as a result of forestry, agriculture and mining, the area is home to long-time locals, farmers, commuters working in nearby Whistler and a large number of young families. Residents value Pemberton s unique environment with its rural lifestyle, world-class activities and recreation and easy access to urban amenities. Sunstone Ridge hosted the Pemberton Music Festival in July 2008, which was attended by 40,000 people. The festival, headlined by music giants Coldplay, Tom Petty and Jay-Z, put Pemberton on the map for its scenic beauty. The 39-acre school site itself, located above the valley floor within the Sunstone Ridge lands, has the zoning approval for a 250,000 square foot facility for educational use. An equestrian facility, farm garden, green spaces, parks and trails are all planned for the Sunstone Ridge development, benefiting students and the greater community. Pemberton s unique location provides a multitude of opportunities to enrich student learning through expanded curriculum offerings and extra-curricular activities. Pemberton is a hub of the environmentally responsible farming movement, with a growing number of farms attaining organic accreditation. Along with providing a clean, healthy environment for all valley residents, organic farming affords the school community with a unique opportunity to study sustainable agricultural practices. With an economy closely tied to it s abundant natural resources educational opportunities exist in the areas of mining, forestry, hydro-electric power production, fishing, and conservation. Joffre Lakes Provincial Park, Tenquille Lake, the Cayoosh Mountains, and world-class fishing destinations such as Tyaughton and Spruce Lakes are all within easy day-trip access. The Pemberton Valley is home to two golf courses, including Big Sky Golf and Country Club with an award-winning golf academy. Three more world-class courses are located in Whistler, a short drive away. Pemberton is also home to a full-service airport and flight academy, providing the future school with potential educational opportunities. With some of Canada s finest professional athletes living and training in both Whistler and Pemberton, the region offers exceptional opportunities for sports-minded youth. 9 A Smart Business Decision: Support for a boarding school at Sunstone Ridge is over whelming. BC is a premier destination for education. Due in part to wellestablished immigration from Asia and around the world as well as attractive subsidies and programs for institutions, 94,000 international students are currently enrolled in BC institutions. BC Premier Christy Clark, recently announced further initiatives to increase the inflow of international students by 50%. There is currently no boarding school operating in the province that offers the equestrian, agricultural, mountain / backcountry access and elite sporting opportunities that a school on the Sunstone Ridge site can. Existing schools in the province are operating at near capacity, many with waiting lists in place.
