1 PPX: 8 S-48/F I/O hannel onverter Installation Instructions About this Product These instructions describe the installation of a PPX: 8 S-48/F I/O hannel onverter in the SIMATI programmable controller system. The PPX: 8 converter allows the use of coaxial cables in a system (extending the maximum distance to 4 km) by converting the S-48 interface to an F interface. This also permits use of dual media from a 4/ to the I/O bases. Installing a PPX: 8 converter also allows you to update an existing / system, that is already using coaxial cables, with a 4/ and 7 PU providing the advantages of greater speed, dual media, and greater remote distance. 2 ompatibility Issues Before installing the PPX: 8 converter, ensure that your system hardware is compatible with the PPX: 8, as defined below: ompatibility with Bases The PPX: 8 S-48/F converter can be installed in the following type of bases: PPX: 4 4-slot base PPX: 8 8-slot base PPX: slot dual media base PPX: 1 1-slot base ompatibility with PUs The PPX: 8 S-48/F converter is compatible with firmware el. 3. or later in the following PUs: PPX:4 112 PPX: 111 PPX: 112 PPX:7 212 PPX:7 213 ompatibility with Power Supplies The PPX: 8 S-48/F converter can be powered by the following supplies: PPX: 11/23 VA PPX: A 11/23 VA PPX: 3 24 VD ompatibility with emote Bases The PPX: 8 S-48/F converter is compatible with bases controlled by the following emote Base ontrollers (Bs): PPX: 8 F B PPX: 8A F B PPX: 2112 F B PPX: 2114A F B PPX: 9912 F B ; cannot use dual media with this unit, replace it with a PPX: 2114A. NOTE: The B must have firmware el. 3. or later if you use the dual media option or BE function. 2

3 Installation Procedure Installing the PPX: 8 Use the following procedure to install the PPX: 8: 1. emove the power from the base in which you are installing the PPX: In the case of a 4/ installation, install the PPX: 8 in the same base as the PU and in the first double I/O slot adjacent to the PU. In the case of a 7 installation, the PPX: 8 must be installed in a base within three feet of the 7 base that is electrically bonded to the base. 3. Use an S-48 cable to connect the PU and PPX: 8 S-48 I/O ports together. The S-48 cable should be as short as possible. The correct wiring for the cable that connects from the 4//7 PU to the new PPX: 8 S-48 I/O channel converter is shown in Table 1. This is different from the normal connections for an S-48 I/O channel in that a cable with two twisted, shielded pairs with 9 pin, subminiature, male D-connectors at each end is required (instead of the single pair cable that is normally used). Pair like named signals 3 and 8, and 4 and 9. See Figure 1. NOTE: All the remote bases connected to a 4//7 PU must have F Bs. S-48 bases cannot be connected between the PU and the PPX: 8. 4 Upgrading an F-Based TI/TI/TIT/TIP to a TI4/TI/TI7 To upgrade an existing F-based, T,, P system, replace the existing programmable controller, including its chassis, its power supply, and all its installed boards with the base, the power supply, 4/ PU, and F/S-48 converter. To upgrade to a 7 system, replace the existing programmable controller, (including its chassis, its power supply, and all its installed boards) with a 7 base, 7 Power Supply, 7 PU, 7 emote I/O Annex, base, the power supply, and F/S-48 converter. The upgrade to a 4/ is shown in Figure 2, and the upgrade to a 7 is shown in Figure 3. NOTE: The 4/ cannot directly replace either a hot backup (HBU) configuration or a system with more than 1 bases. 1. If the Series remote I/O installation consists of more than one coaxial (F) remote I/O channel, combine these channels into a single remote I/O channel. efer to the section entitled, abling and Wiring the System, in the your system manual for information about installation of a coaxial remote I/O channel. 2. If the system has more than 1 bases, multiple VME 7 PUs can be used. (Each 7 controller has its own I/O channel. efer to the SIMATI 7 System Manual (PPX:7 811 x) for information on installation and operation of the 7.) However, using multiple PUs may require significant program modifications in order to divide the program and redistribute the program among the 7 PUs. 3. e-number your bases between 1 and 1 so that no two bases have the same number. Base number is the local base where the PU resides and may be used for additional modules, if desired. 4. Modify the controller s I/O configuration to reflect the channel number and base number changes.. onnect the resulting I/O channel to the 4/ or the 7 system using the PPX: 8 S-48/F I/O hannel onverter.. When using a 4/ controller, connect a 12 ohm resistor between pins 3 and 8 on the S-48 I/O connector of your PU, in order to properly terminate the I/O channel data lines. When using a 7 controller, set jumper E8 on the emote Annex from the U position to the T position to activate termination. Update time for a special function (SF) module is significantly faster when you install the module in the local base, rather than a remote base. You can improve both SF module performance and scan performance by replacing the Series SF modules with Series SF modules and installing them in the 4/ local base. If all SF modules cannot be installed in the local base, consider placing low-activity SF modules, such as the ASII, BASI, or DP modules, in a remote base. Place high-activity modules, such as the NIM or Peerlink, in the local base. 4
