2 Course Offerings Spring 2017 Classical Studies Minor Course Offerings Spring 2017 ART History 451 Ancient Painting - SI Dr. Downing TUTH 11:00-12:15 Prerequisite: ARTH-100 or 101 or 102. Counts as Elective for Classical Studies Minor. $100 Studio Art fee assessed by Art Department. A History of ancient painting techniques (encaustic, fresco, etc.) and styles, beginning with prehistoric cave painting and concluding with works created in the eastern Mediterranean area during the Early Byzantine period. Includes study of Greek vase painting, Aegean frescoes, and Roman wall painting. This is a hands-on course: students are required to choose one ancient painting method and create a painting using the ancient technique. Students will present the results of their work at the Learning and Research Fair held in the spring. Speaking Intensive. HIST 321 Ancient Greece and Rome Dr. Stannish TUTH 11:00-12:15 Minimum of Sophomore standing required. Required for Classics minor. This course examines the Mediterranean world from 1550 BC to AD 500. It is divided into a unit on Greece and a unit on Rome. In addition to learning about the basin s political history, students will become familiar with its literary, philosophic, and religious legacy.
3 HIST 398 Hieroglyphs 2, RES Dr. Stannish F 11:00-11:50 Instructor permission required. HIST 463 Ancient Magic Dr. Stannish TH 6:00-8:30 Minimum requirement of Junior Standing. Counts for Classics minor elective. This course examines the ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman concepts of magic, comparing them with medieval and modern Western ones. The approach is chiefly, though not exclusively, topographical. In other words, the class uses magic s imagined sites to reconstruct attitudes towards it. LITR 372 Biblical Heritage WI, AC Dr. Steinberg TUTH 9:30-10:45 Prerequisite: LITR 100 or instructor permission required. Counts as World Literature and Pre-1900 credit. Counts toward Classical Studies Minor. The literature of the Bible and medieval Christendom with consideration of how that heritage has continued in English and American literature. Attention to critical approaches and practice in writing about literature. Latin 101 Elementary College Latin 1 Dr. Hudak MWF 12:00-12:50 Counts toward Classical Studies Minor. Students will learn to read classical Latin passages. The selections will be a medium by which historical events and social aspects of the period can be examined. The course will introduce the basics of Latin grammar and its influence on the development of other languages. Students will come to appreciate how Latin is alive and well in the extensive etymological roots of English vocabulary.
4 Latin 103 Elementary College Latin 3 - ML Dr. Hudak MWF 1:00-1:50 Prerequisite: Latin 101 or Latin 102 Counts toward Classical Studies Minor Latin 103 is designed to be the culminating course in the introductory exploration of the Latin language. It will build on the grammar and vocabulary mastered in Latin 101 and 102 and extend these basic concepts. The focus will be on developing strategies for handling a variety of sight passages for comprehension and translation that might be used to demonstrate a reading knowledge of Latin as part of a graduate program in classical archaeology, anthropology, or art. Background information on Roman culture and civilization will continue to be incorporated to enhance understanding of the literature being examined. Latin 298 Intermediate Latin: Julius Caesar Dr. Hudak TBA Prerequisite: Latin 103 or instructor permission required.
5 Classical Studies Minor The minor in Classical Studies is an interdisciplinary program of studies intended to encourage undergraduates in various disciplines to come to an integrated awareness of the ancient cultures of Greece, Rome, and the Mediterranean, and of the classical tradition that underlies much of modern civilization. Courses are offered in six different departments, from across the School of Arts and Sciences. Many courses satisfy General Education requirements. No more than two courses may be counted towards any other major or minor program.
