Mesh home network architecture design for IPTV Services Presenter: Emad Shihab Supervisor: Dr. Lin Cai Wireless and Networking research group

Outline Motivation Wired and wireless distribution technologies Broadband home network architectures Performance evaluation Conclusion 2

Motivation The current home network supports data traffic only This will not be sufficient in the future Future home networks need to be able to support Triple-play service At the same time, we want to design efficient home network architectures without rewiring the home 3

Background Currently, most home networks use Ethernet as backbone and IEEE x to support mobile users We have many other choices for the future broadband home network, classified into two categories: Wired distribution technologies Wireless distribution technologies 4

Distribution technologies (Wired) Ethernet Adv: High data rate, wide support, reliability Disadv: Not common in homes, need rewiring Coaxial Adv: High data rate, common in homes, reliable, no rewiring Disadv: Need to develop efficient protocols to take advantage of features (HomePlug AV, MoCA, HomePNA) 5

Distribution technologies (Wired) Powerline Adv: The most commonly available outlet in the home, no rewiring Disadv: Channel is very noisy, effects the data rate and QoS Phone line Adv: No rewiring, high data rates Disadv: outlets not widely available in homes, reflection problem 6

Distribution technologies (Wireless) IEEE x Adv: High data rates, longer range Disadv: operates in the 2.4 GHz range which is very crowded, longer range means increased interference Ultrawide band (UWB) Adv: High data rates, low power, low interference Disadv: Short range, higher cost 7

Distribution technologies (Wireless) Millimeter wave (60 GHz) Adv: Very high data rates, smaller antennas Disadv: At high frequencies, high oxygen absorption. Short range, increased cost, need directional antennas 8

Broadband home network architectures Homogenous wireless-only mesh network Several identical APs that relay data to each other Advantage: High reliability Error resilience AP AP Disadvantage: As the number of hops Laptop increase, throughput degrades Complicated routing and scheduling Home Gateway Wired link AP Laptop Laptop AP 9 AP

Broadband home network architectures cont d Hierarchical heterogeneous wireless-only mesh networks Wireless APs are connected in a hierarchical way APs with longer range construct the backbone of the network APs with shorter range further relay the signal to all corners of the home 10

Broadband home network architectures cont d Advantages: Less complicated routing and scheduling Better throughput than pure wireless mesh network (depends on bottleneck) Disadvantages: Reliability APs need to have dual radios (higher cost) 11

Broadband home network architectures cont d Heterogeneous wireless and wired mesh network Use wired links as backbone and wireless to relay signals to all corners of the home Advantages: Easy to setup Scalable High reliability Disadvantage: Cost 12

Performance evaluation Used the fluid model to measure the admission region of each architecture Used NS2 simulations to verify analytical model HDTV video trace Avg. data rate: 4.85 Mbps Variance: 5.82 x10^9 Frame rate: 30 fps Autocorrelation decay coefficient:

Performance evaluation cont d We use a weakest-link approach, i.e. the maximum number of sources that can be supported by the weakest link is the maximum number that can be supported by the entire network Required Packet loss rate 10^-6 IEEE WPAN standard was used Wireless link changes among 3 states: 40, 65, and 90 Mbps 14

Performance evaluation cont d 15

Conclusion Clearly, the worst performing architecture is the pure wireless mesh network The hierarchical wireless performs better, but suffers from reliability issues The heterogeneous wireless and wired is the best choice because: Higher reliability In worst case performs as good as hierarchical wireless mesh network 16
