This unique programme provides you with the opportunity to develop not only your research skills, but also your analysis of language, social interaction and society. The programme is taught by staff who are among the world s leading fi gures in the fi eld, providing you with the unique opportunity to be taught by those who have, and continue to, shape the discipline. Programme Content The programme will delve into the major traditions, theories and debates surrounding the fi eld of conversation analysis. Modules taken will cover the process of collecting, transcribing and analysing data from everyday phone calls, family mealtimes and playground interactions to clinical encounters, emergency helplines and courtrooms. Other modules will investigate the role that various forms of software and technology support analysis, as well as teaching you how to generate fi ndings that are useful to practitioners. Programme content also teaches you how to work with practitioners to evaluate and improve practice. Please see opposite page for module details. Learning and Teaching Students and staff will engage very closely in lectures, seminars and workshops. Emphasis will be on hands-on data analysis, individually and in small groups. Assessment Assessment will mainly take the form of essays, practical reports, presentations, group exercises and a fully supported dissertation. This advanced dissertation will be modelled on a journal article structure, preparing you to integrate your work into the fi eld of conversation analysis. Entry Requirements All applicants are required to have an upper-second class BA or BSc degree in Social or Health Sciences, Humanities, Linguistics, or associated subjects. International students, whose fi rst language is not English, must have an IELTS score of at least 6.5. For further information and clarifi cation, please contact us. Loughborough is really friendly, the campus and its facilities are amazing, and the range of courses on offer really gives you plenty of choice. My Personal Tutor and lecturers are all very helpful and approachable, and the help I have received from the University s support services has been excellent. Methods for Interaction Research - Alexa Hepburn, Elizabeth Stokoe This module trains students in the practicalities of accessing suitable data, ethical issues, fi eldwork, recording, working with audio and video fi les, using editing software, transcription, building a corpus, managing data. Understanding Communication in Interaction - Sue Wilkinson, Alexa Hepburn This module covers the development of skills in analysing interaction using key principles and fi ndings from conversation analysis such as turn-taking, sequence organisation, preference organisation, person reference, repair and action formation. Communication Practices in Institutional Settings - Paul Drew, Carly Butler This module looks at the history of an interactional approach to understanding in institutions, the application of interactional analysis across a variety of institutional domains. Spring Term: 6 January 28 March 2014 Applications of Interaction Research - Charles Antaki, Elizabeth Stokoe This module looks at the study of interaction analysis in: mediation services; psychotherapy; support for people with intellectual impairment; health and other telephone help-lines, including specialised case studies. Advanced Topics in Conversation Analysis - Paul Drew, John Heritage This module looks at the development of analysis of original data, which relates to CA topics such as: epistemics, multimodal interactions, emotion in interaction, phonetics, affi liation and alignment, advice, complaints, promises, requests, directives, threats and recruitments. Advanced studies in professional and clinical interaction - Paul Drew, John Heritage This module provides in-depth coverage of the application of CA methods to: service encounters; legal proceedings; medical and other therapeutic interactions; expert systems control; classrooms; care-work; news interviewing and broadcasting. Summer Term & Holiday: 28 April September 2014 Dissertation - All staff will be involved in supervision This module involves an independent research project, supervised by a member of staff, in the style of a journal article. Discursive Psychology: Advanced topics - Alexa Hepburn, Jonathan Potter This module covers the concepts and methods in discursive psychology, exploring its contribution to psychology and the social sciences through specifi c topics such as social categories, epistemics, scripts, narrative and socialisation. Dissertation - All staff will be involved in supervision This module involves an independent research project, supervised by a member of staff, in the style of a journal article. 11 9 Department of Social Sciences The Department The Social Sciences Department is based in a supportive and friendly environment with a lively international community of highly regarded academics, researchers, students and support staff. We pride ourselves on providing our students with the best teaching, opportunities and support to ensure they meet their full potential. At the heart of all that we do is our world renowned research, which helps to inform and keep our teaching at the cutting-edge of social sciences development. Facilities The Department of Social Sciences houses state-of-the-art facilities for media and communications research. The Loughborough Qualitative Digital Research Lab (LiQUiD Lab) consists of a suite of rooms containing state-of-the-art equipment for the development of qualitative research involving the use of digital and audiovisual methods and media. The Communication Research Centre Loughborough University s Communication Research Centre (CRC) is located within the Department of Social Sciences and brings together internationally leading researchers from a range of disciplinary backgrounds. The Centre s work is intrinsic to the three Master s programmes, ensuring they are up-to-date and at the cutting edge of Social Science development. The Centre s interests span the range of communication studies from culture and media to discourse and social interaction. It is also home to a wide range of research projects on topics from political communication to media and religion, and members also have expertise in a wide range of social research methods. The CRC is comprised of two core research groups; the Culture and Media Analysis Research Group (CaMARG) and the Discourse and Rhetoric Group (DARG). CaMARG brings together staff and students in the Department engaged in studying, researching, and writing about all aspects of both media and cultural life. It is interdisciplinary, drawing on insights from across the social sciences and humanities to explore institutional formations, expressive forms, and everyday practices. DARG is home to a community of academics, postgraduate students and visitors who pursue research into a broad range of topics but share an interest in language, how it is used socially, and what effects it has in interaction and in text. Industry Links Several international journals are edited by members of the department including the European Journal of Communication and Media, Culture and Society and members have acted as consultants for a wide range of national and international bodies including UNESCO, the United Nations, Ofcom, the Department for Children, Schools and Families, and the Institute for Public Policy Research. Our innovative research has received international recognition within the social sciences, including the award of the Queen s Anniversary Prize for outstanding work at world-class level. One of our professors was recently appointed a member of the House of Lords in the UK Parliament.
