5 WHY SHOULD YOU CHOOSE A PORTUGUESE WINE? Because they are made from unique varieties, grown only in Portugal. Because although Portugal is a small country, it has a great diversity of microclimates. This results in a wide range of wine styles which are suitable for a whole host of different occasions. Because Portuguese wines are incredibly food-friendly. The diverse medley of indigenous varieties, and unique levels of acidity, offer a wealth of styles capable of matching even the most complex and exacting dishes. Because we have a long and rich history, having produced wines for over 4000 years. Our new generation of winemakers combine traditional winemaking practices with innovative and contemporary techniques. Because Portuguese wines are recognised globally and are highly awarded in international competitions. For every 10 wines submitted to competitions, 8 receive an award.

6 WINE IN MODERATION. The WINE in MODERATION programme is a European wine sector initiative aimed at promoting the responsible consumption of wine and wine products. It communicates the message that wine is a premium product to be savoured in moderation, and educates the public about the risks of excessive and improper consumption. It also encourages a wider cultural change in the approach to alcohol consumption. Viniportugal, the association responsible for the promotion of Portuguese wines, supports the WINE in MODERATION campaign through its A Copo (wine by the glass) initiative, which promotes responsible drinking. drink responsibly

7 PORTUGUESE GRAPES A TREASURE TROVE Portugal s native grape varieties are a real national treasure. Exciting, distinctive. Prized and savoured by generations of Portuguese wine-lovers. Ripe for discovery as fresh new flavours by wine drinkers elsewhere in the world. Here are just a few of the finest WHITE GRAPES ALVARINHO ARINTO ENCRUZADO FERNÃO PIRES Aus Alvarinho werden charaktervolle, mineralische Weißweine gewonnen, mit dominanten Noten von Pfirsich und Zitrusfrüchten und gelegentlich von Tropenfrüchten und Blumen. Das berühmte Herzland der Traube liegt in der Vinho Verde -Region von Monção und Melgaço. Alvarinho Weine haben einen reicheren Körper und höheren Alkoholgehalt als die meisten anderen Vinho Verde-Weine und werden häufig unverschnitten und mit dem Namen der Traube versehen abgefüllt. Die Weine sind bereits frisch abgefüllt köstlich, können sich aber mit dem Alter noch weiter verbessern. Winzer in anderen Teilen Portugals haben inzwischen ebenfalls die Vorzüge des Alvarinho erkannt, sodass sich die Rebsorte nun langsam südwärts verbreitet. Aus Arinto, auch als Pedernã bekannt, werden elegante, mineralische Weißweine mit dominanten Noten von Apfel und Zitrone gewonnen, die bereits als junger Wein köstlich sind, durch Reifung aber noch an Komplexität gewinnen. Arinto stellt den Hauptanteil in den berühmten Bucelas-Weißweinen dar. Eine spät reifende Traube mit dem großen Vorzug, dass sie auch bei höheren Temperaturen ihre bemerkenswerte Frische behält. In Cuvées anderer Weißweintrauben bringt der Arinto eine frische Eleganz ein. Seine natürliche kräftige Säure stellt außerdem einen Vorteil bei der Herstellung von Schaumweinen dar. Aus Encruzado werden elegante, ausgewogene und körperreiche Weißweine mit zarten Blumenund Zitrusaromen gewonnen, gelegentlich auch mit angenehm mineralischem Charakter. Auch ohne Eiche auf eine reine Weise köstlich, ist der Encruzado ebenfalls für Fermentation oder Lagerung in Eichenfässern gut geeignet. Diese führt zu feinen, wohlstrukturierten Weinen, die für viele Jahre reifen und an Komplexität gewinnen können. Am ehesten begegnet man dieser Traube in der Dão-Region. An der Rebe behalten Encruzado-Trauben selbst bei Hitze ihre frische Säure und reifen bis zur Perfektion, ohne übermäßig süß zu werden. Aus Fernão Pires, gelegentlich auch als Maria Gomes bekannt, werden leichte, fruchtige, duftende Weißweine gewonnen, die im Geschmack an Muskateller erinnern. Die Noten von Zitrusfrüchten und Blumen sind am markantesten, wenn die Trauben früh für einen jung getrunkenen Wein gelesen werden. Fernão Pires wird auch in Schaumweinen verwendet, und kann gelegentlich spät gelesen werden, um süße Weine zu gewinnen. Als Portugals meistkultivierte weiße Traube wird sie im ganzen Land und vor allem entlang der Westküste angebaut, einschließlich auf der Setúbal Halbinsel, in Tejo, in Lisboa und in Bairrada. RED GRAPES BAGA CASTELÃO TOURIGA FRANCA TOURIGA NACIONAL Diese spät reifende Traube ergibt häufig schlanke, tanninische Rotweine, die in ihrer Jugend adstringierend sein können, aber mit der Zeit zur Komplexität reifen. Baga kann reiche, geschmacklich dichte Rotweine ergeben, mit Geschmacksnoten von Kirsche und Zwetschge. Durch Reifung können weichere und komplexere Noten von Kräutern, Malz, Zeder und Tabak erreicht werden. Das Hauptanbaugebiet der Traube liegt in Bairrada, sie wird aber auch in Beiras, einschließlich Dão, angebaut. Baga wird auch als Grundlage von Schaumweinen verwendet. Eine der meistgepflanzten roten Trauben des südlichen Teils Portugals, die kräftige, feine Weine mit einem Himbeer-Aroma ergibt, die zu einem Charakter mit Noten von Zedernholz und Zigarrenkisten reifen. Besonders gut kommen seine Stärken auf sandigen Böden wie denen der Palmela-Region auf der Setúbal-Halbinsel südlich der Hauptstadt Lissabon zum Tragen. Aus Touriga Franca werden dicht gefärbte, kräftige, aber reiche, aromatische Weine mit blumigen Noten und Obertönen von Brombeere gewonnen. Er stellt eine der fünf empfohlenen Rebsorten für die Herstellung von Portwein dar, und wird auch für die Herstellung von roten Douro-Cuvées verwendet. Tatsächlich ist sie im Douro-Tal die meistgepflanzte Traube und wird häufig für Cuvées verwendet. Aus Touriga Nacional werden kräftige, reich gefärbte Weine (und Portweine) mit komplexen Aromen und Noten von Veilchen, Lakritz, schwarzer Johannisbeere und Himbeeren gewonnen, mit einem subtilen, würzigen Hauch von Bergamotte. Obwohl im Ursprung ein nördlicher Wein, wird die Traube nun in ganz Portugal angebaut, und kann Weine ergeben, die gut altern. TRINCADEIRA ARAGONEZ Aus Trincadeira, in der Douro-Region als Tinta Amarela bekannt, können Rotweine mit wunderbar hellen Noten von Himbeere, Gewürzen, Pfeffer und Kräutern gewonnen werden, mit einer sehr frischen Säure. Diese Rebsorte wird in ganz Portugal angebaut, vor allem in trockenen, warmen Regionen, aber von ihrer besten Seite zeigt sie sich wohl in der Alentejo Region. Aus Tempranillo, in Portugal als Aragonez oder Tinta Roriz bekannt, werden feine, elegante Rotweine mit Aromen von roten Früchten, Pflaumen und Brombeere gewonnen sowie mit kräftigen Tanninen; sie bieten ein gutes Reifungspotential bei der Alterung. Dies ist die meistgepflanzte rote Traube in Portugal. Im Norden Tinta Roriz genannt stellt sie eine der Haupttrauben für Portweine und Douro-Weine dar und spielt auch in der Dão Region eine wichtige Rolle. In der Alentejo-Region ist die Traube als Aragonez bekannt und wird üblicherweise mit anderen Rebsorten wie Trincadeira zu Cuvées verarbeitet. 250 GRAPE VARIETIES

We are increasing and improving a few hectares of vines, some from our grandparents already. The idea comes from longtime but only in 2012, we met the conditions to start the project, small, with great care and attention and with the collaboration of competent and innovative professionals and good friends. We believe that talking about the Douro wine, should also include the region, the vineyards, the people, the culture, that s where the name Chronicle comes from. Later, was founded the company VINIHOLD, a pioneer project where the family invested in other wine regions, which represents an access to a unique portfolio of wines from the main Portuguese wine regions, as well as most of the partnerships with wine companies in different regions. Our main activity is the production of wine and olive oil, which combines art, solidarity and wine tourism activities. Fruit of the objectives of the young french winemaker Christophe Leal Gameiro, concept creator Brind Art came installed in the Alentejo, where this time applies biodynamic techniques, including herbal medicine process, which is the treatment of our vineyards, olive trees, other plants that have beneficial properties. Each label is the representation of a canvas painted by Portuguese artists, specifically for Brind Art. Our two estates, Quinta de S.Mateus and Quinta de Valdazar, are located in Bairrada, central Portugal, close to the Atlantic Ocean. The soils, in our smooth hills (roughly 100 mts.), are mostly limestone and clay. In the vines we use traditional methods as a part of our sustainable viticulture. When the grapes, picked and sorted by hand, arrive in the cellar, they are treated according to the old concept (no oenological products at all, old wooden vats) but with modern tecnology (robot-pigeur, last generation press. Sparkling wine (espumante) is made by second fermentation in the bottle method, used in the region for more than a century.
