1 Week 1 WEEK 1: Learn to build a coil pot using playdoh. Design your pot. :00 Arrival Activity Make a VESSEL from playdough :05 Introductions and expectations New month! Introduce anyone new go over expectations and the space Class expectations: Have fun, stay safe, respect studio, respect others :10 Journals Invite students to share their journal with a neighbor Invite students to share with the larger group (maybe someone wants to share something cool they saw is someone else's journal!) Review the posted guidelines for critiquing and giving feedback :20 Clay handbuilding lesson This month we're working in clay! Handbuilding is building without using a wheel We'll be learning/using a coil building technique Demonstrate how to roll a coil and build with a coil :35 Practice Let everyone practice rolling and building using the playdough :50 Wrapping up Clean hands and tables. Close up playdough Recognize students who were great listeners, helpers, critiquers, etc Remind students to work in their journals (maybe do some cover art!) Say goodbye at the door to both parents and kids! HAND OUT REMINDERS TO FALL PARTY!

What will it hold? :05 Journals Invite students to share their journal with a neighbor Invite students to share with the larger group (maybe someone wants to share something cool they saw is someone else's journal!) Review the posted guidelines for critiquing and giving feedback :20 Joining Clay Lesson Teach how to join clay by scoring and slipping Emphasize how important it is to join properly! Don't get lazy! :25 Begin Clay Project Each artist gets a chuck of clay; roll a base/slab to start Carve name (legibly) in the base of the pot Take time rolling coils Build walls up by joining pieces well! :40 Sharing time Invite students to share their in-progress pots :50 Wrapping up Clean hands and tables Wrap clay pots in wet paper towel and cover with plastic Double check that the name is still visible on the pot Remind students to work in their journals Say goodbye at the door to both parents and kids! Reminder - Fall party coming up!

Goal is to finish today. :15 Demonstrate how to construct a lid from a clay slab :20 Demostrate finishing techniques Smoothing the clay with wet fingers Adding texture and pattern "hiding" the coils :45 SHARING If time allows, let the students share their finished pots :50 Wrapping up Clean hands and tables Place pots UNCOVERED in the cubbies Remind students to work in their journals Tell kids and parents -- acrylic paint NEXT week! Say goodbye at the door to both parents and kids!

Review the posted guidelines for critiquing and giving feedback :15 DESIGN Design your finished painted pot on paper Share if time allows :25 PAINT Use acrylic paints Aim for complete coverage to protect the clay "raw" clay should be covered with varnish :45 SHARING If time allows, let the students share their art work (or hang it on the classroom wall for a "gallery") :55 Wrapping up Clean hands and tables Take pictures of each artist with their finished piece Invite them to share their work in our student art show in January Say goodbye at the door to both parents and kids!
