What is NWEA Doing With The Common Core? Presenters: Mr. Rob Johnson Mr. Dan Henderson, NWEA Partner Relations Team
Agenda for Today What is NWEA s Response to the Common Core Standards? What should be considered when adopting a Common Core test in your state? General CC Background (Common Core 101) MAP for Common Core Test Fall 2011 Closing Thoughts & Questions
Aligned with college and work expectations Focused and coherent Council of Chief State School Officers & National Governor s Association Include rigorous content and application of knowledge through highorder skills Internationally benchmarked so that all students are prepared to succeed in our global economy and society Based on evidence and research* *
NWEA and the Common Core The Common Core State Standards have been a major focus at NWEA Matt Chapman, Chief Executive Officer and Raymond Yeagley, Chief Academic Officer, presented an analysis of a draft-version of the standards to the three organizations leading and managing the standards development process (Council of Chief State School Officers, National Governors Association, and Achieve Inc.).
MAP aligned with Common Core Can we build a MAP Test? Yes, we can! We can alignto the CCSS in the same way we align to existing state standards We can create goal structures in reading, language usage and mathematics just as we do for existing state standards We can create item pools that measure the breadth of the standards (sufficient items for each goal area) So..
Who has adopted?
Common Core Implementation Each state will determine the extent to which it implements the Common Core. 27 states have adopted the CCSS as is 10 states have elected to supplement the CCSS with up 15% additional standards 7 have yet to decide how to implement the CCSS States will support current state standards & CCSS during a transitional period Many states plan to develop crosswalks of the CCSS to their state standards

What s included in MAP aligned with Common Core? MAP aligned with Common Core will include the following content areas: (Includes both Survey Test and Survey with Goals Test) Mathematics 2-5 / Mathematics 6+ (50 items) Language Usage 2-12 (50 items) Reading 2-5/ Reading 6+ (40 items)
What s included in MAP aligned with Common Core? Coverage and Alignment The initial version of the tests covers only content of the Common Core State Standards that can be assessed by using hand aligned multiple-choice items. These multiple choice hand aligned items have been identified by the NWEA Content Services Team. This has resulted in a tight alignment to the standards at a granular level in each content area.
DesCartes What s included in MAP aligned with Common Core? Targeted for release with the next phase of the Common Core tests in the fall of Extended Goal Structure Document Specific language that describes what has been included in each goal.
CCSS Alignment One Decision (hand-aligned) Items directly aligned to grade level standard(s) Assures item measures appropriate content and is appropriate for item pool Allows us to do a gap analysis finding standards with few alignments. MAP is M/C only. Guides new item development and pool enhancement Allow us to demonstrate alignment Items in pool have no grade association it is a MAP pool
MPG aligned with Common Core? Debut of Common Core-aligned MPG Survey with Goals tests that: 1. will be directly aligned to grade level standard(s) 2. will have items pools that are validated by NWEA psychometricians 3. will not be grade-specific, meeting students where they are 4. will include multiple choice, traditional MPG item types, and new kinds of items 5. will assess math and reading Available July 2012
Common Core State Standards (Math) Math CCSS were influenced by Singapore, Hong Kong and Finland, etc. (high performing nations) and build from the ground up using the topics and approaches of these high performing nations. See TIMSS report.
