2 is a large scale industry with complex industrial plants that require a large investment to set-up. Due to the economic requirement to have these plants operating continuously at maximum efficiency, it is not usually possible to use them for the training of new Chemical Engineers and Chemical Plant Operators. The HFT Education range of teaching products allows students to learn the important practical and theoretical knowledge by studying actual Unit Operations on a pilot plant scale. The running of actual processes on the unit operation pilot plants means that real chemical engineering processes can be observed and studied. The flexibility of the pilot plants allows different industrial situations to be simulated and observed, including operational plant faults. The inclusion of industrial control devices and instrumentation allows students to gain important control, troubleshooting and diagnostic skills that can be taken forward into their working careers. Control of the pilot plants, either manually, using industrial instruments and devices, or automatically via a PC and software. Monitoring of the process operation using instruments and devices or via software and a PC, or a combination of both to ensure efficient operation. The ability to control the process to simulate situations experienced in industry, so troubleshooting and diagnosis can be performed to set the plant back into an efficient operating condition. 29 CASe STUDY: Demonstration of the HFT Education CHE53 Manual Continuous Distillation Pilot Plant with Data Acquisition during the Advanced Technology Centre (ATC) Dedication Ceremony at Bridge Valley Community and Technical College. CHE53 Manual Continuous Distillation Pilot Plant with Data Acquisition It had to satisfy: 1. The need for teaching and learning. 2. Manual control of the operational parameters. 3. Clear observation of the whole unit operation. 4. To demonstrate the individual processes in the unit operation. 5. Obtaining the operational data both manually and automatically for immediate diagnosis and further analysis. 6. Operation as a batch or continuous distillation unit operation. 7. To produce a final product for analysis. 8. To represent the actual industrial process on a small scale. With the CHE53 assembled and after performing the commissioning checks and connecting the cooling water, we were able to start distilling a mixture of alcohol and water. The CHE53 performed exactly as it should and we were able to observe all of the important parts of a distillation unit operation. But what happens when things go wrong? We can simulate real industrial situations in the CHE53 and we decided that Mother Nature was going to send in a cold storm. We could immediately see from the temperatures in the column that we had to change the control parameters to get the distillation column working efficiently again. We set about changing the reboiler temperature, feed flow and reflux ratio to increase the column temperature. Success, we were now operating efficiently again. We also increased the feed and temperature to a point where we could see flooding gradually affecting each tray in the column. Again, we were able to take the necessary action to put the column back to its normal efficient operating condition....we were able to see what is happening inside a column that is normally hidden from view in a stainless steel case. We had learnt a lot in two hours about how to control a distillation column. How to troubleshoot and decide what actions to take. How to read the instruments and how to understand what they were telling us and we were able to see what is happening inside a column that is normally hidden from view in a stainless steel case. We had only spent two hours with the CHE53 and already we knew that it was going to teach us a lot about distillation. 29 > visit for more information 2014/15
