1 PGCE Secondary Music Subject Knowledge Audit Name: Example Trainee First Degree Title: Name of First Degree Institution: Additional HE Qualifications / Awards (e.g. MA degree): Subject audits are designed to help you match your subject knowledge, skills and understanding to the requirements of teaching your specialist subject in the secondary school, and to identify both your strengths and gaps that it may be possible and appropriate for you to fill during your studies on the PGCE course. This document will contribute to the creation of a Subject Action Plan which will help monitor the development of your subject knowledge throughout initial teacher training. The process of subject auditing happens in several stages. You should complete this audit as part of the Pre-course Preparation Stage: 1. Interview Stage You will have completed an initial subject audit before your interview and this will have been discussed with you. 2. Pre-course Preparation Stage Following your interview you will have received a letter outlining some tasks and activities that you should complete before the start of the course. Your work on these tasks will be reviewed in your first tutorial. In addition, and in the light of the tasks you have already been set, you should complete this Subject Knowledge Audit form in full, detailing the level of your knowledge, skills and understanding, and providing an explanation of the nature of your experience and/or a source of evidence. The completed Subject Knowledge Audit should be brought to your first tutorial. 3. First Tutorial Stage In preparation for your first tutorial, you should begin to complete a subject action plan. The pro forma for this will be made available in advance. Your tutor will discuss this with you and assist you in the completion of the action plan. 4. Development Stage Between your first and subsequent tutorials, you should work on the items outlined in your action plan. This might include personal reading and research, taking part in peer tutoring sessions as both leader and participant, and researching the topic in the context of your placement school. Your progress will be reviewed during tutorials and will be submitted as part of an assignment later in the course. 1

Composing Can compose short pieces suitable for school ensembles - i am confident in composing songs, familiar with correct structuring and chordal patterns. Arranging Can arrange demonstrating understanding of a range of practices - completed orchestration module at university, helping me understand how to arrange for lots of instruments. Arranging Can arrange short pieces suitable for school ensembles - worked for a year, arranging steel pan music for 4 separate groups. 2

3 Relevant Evidence of Knowledge, accomping, opera etc includes Improvising Can improvise as an approach to composing - I feel happy to explore and play around with improvisation Improvising Can improvise in performing - I can improvise and am happy to experiment however my technical ability is probably not good. Performing on main instrument (Please identify which instrument) Performing on other instruments (please identify and indicate standard of performing for each) - I have reached degree standard playing the cello, i am very confident in solo and ensemble situations. - I am constantly trying to improve my keyboard skills. I am not confident yet but could practice something for a week and be able to play up to around grade 6 standard. - I can play the guitar, the drums, clarinet, violin and recorder to an acceptable standard 3

Basic keyboard skills - I am constantly trying to improve my keyboard skills. I am not confident yet but could practice something for a week and be able to play up to around grade 6 standard. Conducting and directing - I completed conducting for brass and wind and conducting the orchestra modules during university so feel confident with contacting or directing small ensembles. Notations Familiar with notation systems other than staff notation I can read tablature, have an understanding of figured bass. 4
